I need to take a look at the logic used to defend angry white men. Lets say I beat someone within an inch of their life with a stick, and leave them lying in pool of their own blood. 10 years later they see me sitting in a restaurant, with the stick, enjoying a meal. They leave and come back with the police, and demand justice. My response, “What’s the big deal? It was ten years ago, why bring it up now? Why are we rehashing the past?
This is an over simplified version, but what I’m trying to get across to angry white people is the reason we need to talk about the past, and reconcile that past. You can’t just say that my parents came from Poland in 1960, and had nothing to do with slavery. Why? Because the color of their skin gave them an advantage, and assuming you’re not adopted so does yours.
My father served his country during the Korean War. He was in the Navy, and put up with the hatred of white people who were supposed to be his mates, they didn’t own slaves either, but their attitude was one of superiority, and distain because my father’s skin tone was different. Some teased him because they thought he was Native American, and some because they new he was a Black man.
He told me he got respect from few of his shipmates, and those that didn’t respect him… well; he did what he had to do. My father was an electronics mate he operated the radio. He served 4 years and was honorably discharged. He went to college got his bachelor’s degree (with valedictory honors in 1955) from Lincoln University Oxford Pa. another bastion of social acceptance, and cultural awareness in the 50s. Then went to Temple, and got his masters. Started teaching at Southern University then at Maryland State University where he decided that he needed to get a PhD in Colonial American History. He wrote his thesis on The Peace Treaty of 1789. You know why? Because his advisor told him he could not write about anything involving Black people in the history of this country; his country, the country of his ancestors, my ancestors Black and Native peoples.
Now that is the short history of one black man, my father. He worked hard, put himself through school on scholarships, he was one of the smartest people I ever knew, and he accomplished all of that while white people, angry white people were trying to hold him back. Telling him that he was not welcome in his own country.
So, I have to ask, what is it that white people are angry about? The fact that they had it so good for so long and now the playing field is being leveled? That people no longer pick them first because of the color of their skin? Is it that the same rights and privileges now apply to everyone and not just them, WHAT? Now, if anybody in this country had the right to be angry it’s Black people, but we’re not we’re frustrated. Frustrated by people who say it’s not their fault, and they don’t see what the big deal is, and why do we have to rehash the past, and why should we level the playing field. The playing field needs to be leveled so that no other group of people who come here are treated in the same manner as my father was; like people are treating Mexicans now.
Do any of you know why Rome fell? Most people think it was because Goths, Huns and Vandals were attacking the borders. This is true, but not to destroy Rome, they wanted to be Roman, and Rome destroyed itself trying to keep them out. Think about that the next time you call a Mexican Illegal immigrant.
