My grandson and I just got back from seeing “Spiderwick” It was a great movie! It brought me back to opening up my imagination.

In the movie we have such characters as Thimbletack who is a “house brownie” who turns into a “Boggart” if he is angered. You must feed him honey to keep him calm. We also have some goblins who are the ogre’s helpers. Then there was also Hogsqueal who loved to eat birds!

The story is about a boy who sees the house brownie and finds the book that his late great great uncle wrote called the field guide. He ends up having to save the book and his family from the big bad ogre and the bad goblins.

It was a movie I enjoyed seeing with my grandson. I wouldn’t recommend it for small children of 4 or 5 if they scare easily. I think some parts had my 8 year old grandson on the edge of his seat a couple of times!

Sounds like a great movie for fearless little ones or those a bit older Quiet. I watched Underdog with my grandkids last week. It wasn't antimated, we didn't got to the theater, but watched it on the big bed.

My grandson squeals with delight at things he deems very funny. They had seen the movie before and they just loved to give me a preview all through the movie. "Don't worry Poppy Underdog's gonna be ok." haha.

Kids are fantastic.....and these get to go home. You just can't beat that ! haha...

I used to take my younger daughter to the movies every weekend when she was about 7. I remember taking her to Someone and the Giant Peach. And the Halloween movie with Tim Curry. There were so many. I also remember falling asleep in the theatre half the time or more. These days I never go to the movies. I just watch them on tv.

Lbno ~ I bet your daughter has fond memories of that too...even of you falling asleep!  Sad to say this is the first time I have taken either of my grandkids to the movies.  I also don't go to the theatre - its a rip off, so I wait for blockbuster and watch them on my own schedule!  :)

lfb - it was james and the giant peach. it was a tim burton film, from a pretty popular children's book.

quiet - wasn't there some kind of controversy about that movie kicked up by the religious right who said it was ruining children's minds because it was teaching them about something other than god?
  • quietone said on Feb 24, 2008....
trav ~ Oh, I have no idea about that, and if that was so, I didn't see that in the film at all.  It was no worse than any of the Harry Potter stories, or The Last Mimzy.  It was just plain good entertainment for parent and child.

well, they didn't look too kindly on either of those either. course, they didn't like 'the passion' that much. guess you just can't please some people unless it's charlton heston in the ten commandments. :-) i'm looking forward to seeing spyderwick tho, it looks really good.
  • quietone said on Feb 24, 2008....
Yes there was quite a stink about "the passion" but none about charlton heston playing the 10 commandments.  I think you will like it...its cute... and lets you have a bit of the childhood imagination we all seem to lose over time.  ~

you know, i was kinda neutral about seeing this, b/c it was out around the same time as the bridge to terrabithia, which i really liked, but perhaps i should add it to the netflix queue...

ed - I liked that movie a lot also.  I think between the 2 that Terrabithia was a better movie.  This one is less of a "story", but cute for a kid.
