People think that my main goal is to bash Starbucks, when the truth is, I just don't like what they stand for. It could be a toy store or a record shop, but its what they stand for that scares me. It's like the making of a Brave New World. What happened to the time when I knew the names of the people who made my coffee in the smalltime shops? What happened to those times when every coffee place was different? Some had poetry readings and open-mic nights. Some were set up in old houses, hidden loft spaces, and other unexpected areas. Some were run by local artists or struggling couples. What I hate is that they are stealing a cultural idea and turning it into what all other corporate chains are like. Starbucks is a major contributing factor in the growing blandness of America where everything is about efficiency and profit, and the charm and culture only matter if it equates to higher revenue and Wall Street.

that's what big business does, it erases culture and creates sameness. but if people didn't buy into it, then they wouldn't be in business. it's the people's faults.

these corporations wouldn't exist if the people, who all have a choice, didn't give them money. it's our own faults, so stop blaming them.

LOL...it's`a coffee house...IF you want a small time coffee shop..open one. Are there not more important issues that bother you? Our country at war let's say. And Wal-Mart?? No disrespect but i Have 2 children and thank GOd for Walmart or there are times we wouldnt make it. You want high class products and hometown coffee shops. Supply and demand seem to think differently. PS a cup of coffee is a cup of coffee. And trust me I drink lots and lots of coffee...LOL

It's true, at least in Detroit, that for every independent coffee house, there's 3 Starbucks. Yet, we have them (indies), complete with poetry nights/slams. I used to think Starbuck's was the devil until the Wayne State Campus Starbuck's ran out the other one coffeehouse(Java--something). I had an 18 credit semester, and if it wasn't for my Grande Hot Green Tea with Raw Sugar I wouldn't have survived it. Was it sad to see the other Coffeehouse out of business? Not really. Oh well.

Fact is that coffee houses that the beatnik Ginsburgian poetry slinging feel that you are seeking are becoming a thing of the past because they don't make money. Its just toohard to keep them open. I can understand your dislike of the corporate nature of it. Many people seem the same way about . When you look at it from a coffee perspective, while its not the best, there is a lot worse brew of bean out there.

Coffee has benefits. Hey has anyone seen the gentleman who visited thousands of Starbucks across the nation? He's taken his own idea about coffee and designed his very own culture shockwave. I wonder if he bought a new car? Maybe he's created a way to fuel his car with coffee. New ideas profit all mankind.
