Those are interesting questions, Quiet!! :-)  I would like to know too, but I think I know the one about the frogs. . .I think they hibernate in the mud(?) I could be wrong, but this is what I have believed for a long time - I dont know where I got that info from.

If I was a water mammal/fish I choose to be a dolphin (coz they are cute and intelligent) somewhere tropic where the water is warm :-)

Polar ~ I have also heard that about frogs, but for the life of me I can't figure out how the stay alive in the mud frozen!! I thought for sure you'd say you would want to be an orca whale, but dophin is great too!  :)  I think I'd like to be a seahorse don't know why, cause they are so colorful and different.
  • polarheart said on Feb 22, 2008....
I wouldn't mind being an Orca or another type of whale (coz I love whales as you know), but they are quite fearsome (the Orcas) and tend to go to really icy places. . .brrrr.  Seahorse is a great choice!  I think its a bargain coz the male seahorses carry the babies!!  How cool!
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
polar ~ orcas aren't fearsome... they are overly friendly whale.  They got that reputation becasue they like to get close to boats and rub themselves on them and end up tipping the boat over so it "looks like" an attack.  All the ones I saw in the wild out in WA were so beautiful and just went about their business looking for food with their pods.  I had forgotten that about seahorses.  I wonder if that is the only species that does that? another question!  ha!
  • polarheart said on Feb 22, 2008....
Wow, I didn't know that Orcas have tipped boats!! I was just remembering how fearsome they are when catching their prey. . .they way they throw those seals up into the air (almost playing with their food).  Also I watch a documentary where 2 or 3 hunt together and catch a large whale by biting into it and diving down deep into the ocean by force and thereby drowing it.
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
Yes I would imagine to hunt and survive they are fearsome in that way...but not to "hunt" humans...they love to have their skin rubbed that is what the people on the whale watch told us..so when there are so many people out in the water watching the whales they can get friendly and close to smaller boats...and the next thing you know...over they go.  We had one come up right beside our boat to get a breath just before it dove to go under us...I could have touched its nose almost!  It was so awesome!  :)
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
I sure wish someone would tell me how firefies stay lit!! LOL
  • wombat said on Feb 22, 2008....
I would have to do some research to answer the questions, but I would like to be a seahorse--the males are the ones that get pregnant!
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
wombie ~ look up above and see what I said I wanted to be - my first comment - hows that!!

Quiet, that sounds just great.  I would love to have an experience like that! :-)
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
wombie ~ you read the post, just not all the comments.  I sometimes don't read all the comments either.  It is funny out of all the fish/mammals we could have chosen!
  • wombat said on Feb 22, 2008....
Well, don't get nit-picky, Missy......ha.  You know what I meant....  No, I don't always make it through all the comments---and I speed read and make mistakes on what I thought I read.  We think alike, though!

What I want to know is how a person can have chemistry with someone they have never met in person?
  • CreativeWoman said on Feb 22, 2008....
I don't know the answers, but I have a silly question to ask.

Why is it that an electric eel can shock things in the water, but not itself?

    CW
  • mobil said on Feb 22, 2008....

How do fish stay alive during the winter when the water is so cold? They're cold blooded and the water temp is always above freezing.

Where do frogs go in the winter when the pond is frozen solid? How do they stay alive? Yeah they go in the mud

Why can’t a person who is ticklish in the ribs or feet tickle themselves? Same reason if feels so good when someone gives you a hand job. haha, couldn't resist that one.

If you were a salt water fish or mammal what ocean or body of water would you want to live in and why. What fish or mammal would you be? Pacific because is so much bigger and warmer. I'd be a sperm whale........

What makes a firefly light up? If you look closely, you'll see a little female firefly giving the lit up male a handjob. This makes his light go on and he can't do that by himself. See explanation for this above.

Do you have any silly questions you have always wanted to ask? Go ahead ask here……

Who knows what answers we may learn

CW, it's the handjob thing with the eel too, when the guy eel is getting one, he emits sparks. God did something so lady eel and he wouldn't get a shock. I don't know what .

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

  • polarheart said on Feb 22, 2008....
Mobil, you are hilarious!!  A woodchuck would chuck tons of wood if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
wombie ~ hahaah you little seahorse!!

polar ~  I really don't know that myself.  I think its just a good basic instinct...and when you meet in person sometimes you find your instinct was way off. (experience talking there) NO wombie I am not talking about you!! haha
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
mobil ~ if a woodchuck could chuck wood, he would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck wood.
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
Ha I see polar beat me too it!! LOL
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
mobil ~ I also see where the song"You Light up my Life" brings a whole new meaning!
  • mobil said on Feb 22, 2008....
So, you and Polar are in agreement about woodchucking, or close. Polar says tons and you say as much as he could.....hmmm.

Does a ton of woodchuck wood weight 2,000 pounds?
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....
CW ~ I wonder too.  good question
  • quietone said on Feb 22, 2008....

Those fireflys are horny little buggers aren't they haha. Thanks Quiet
  • polarheart said on Feb 22, 2008....

Ok, so I here's the full low down about frogs:

The frogs that live in colder climates hibernate.  Some dig holes or find cracks in logs or rock areas.  Their heart beats and breathing slow down and their body temperature reaches close to the outside temperature.  They have a lot of glucose in their bodies and it keeps them from freezing.  Half-frozen frogs will thaw out and live.  Some frogs hibernate under water.  These don't breathe and get their oxygen from the water through their skin.

  • polarheart said on Feb 22, 2008....
    For CW:

The electric eel has three abdominal pairs of organs that produce electricity. They are the main organ, the hunter's organ, and the sachs’ organ. These organs take up 4/5 of its body. Only the front 1/5 contains the vital organs.[1] These organs are made of electrocytes lined up in series. The electrocytes are lined up so the current flows through them and produces an electrical charge. When the eel locates its prey, the brain sends a signal through the nervous system to the electric cells. This opens the ion channel, allowing positively-charged sodium to flow through, reversing the charges momentarily. By doing that it creates electricity. The electric eel generates its characteristic electrical pulse in a manner similar to a battery, in which stacked plates produce an electrical charge. In the electric eel, some 5,000 to 6,000 stacked electroplaques are capable of producing a shock at up to 500 volts and 1 ampere of current (500 watts). The organs give the electric eel the ability to generate two types of electric organ discharges (EODs), low voltage and high voltage. The shock could be harmful for an adult human.

I got the answer about firefly's.  It's rather detailed, but I found it here.

This is the first couple of paragraphs of the explanation:

"Fireflies or lightning bugs make light within their bodies. This process is called bioluminescence and is shared by many other organisms, mostly sea-living or marine organisms. Fireflies light up to attract a mate. To do this, the fireflies contain specialized cells in their abdomen that make light.

The cells contain a chemical called luciferin and make an enzyme called luciferase. To make light, the luciferin combines with oxygen to form an inactive molecule called oxyluciferin. The luciferase speeds up the reaction, which occurs in two steps:"

    My silly question :

Do fishes know they are in water?

  • polarheart said on Feb 23, 2008....
    Another silly question:

How do we know that we can all see the same colours?  We are taught the names of colours from young "this is red, this is blue, this is green", but how do we know that we can all see/perceive the colours as exactly the same?  Eg someone who has been taught "this is red" may actually see the colour as purple in my colour sphere, however they will call it red, because that's what they have been taught.   Am I making any sense?
  • polarheart said on Feb 23, 2008....
Scipio, in answer to that I can only say - I'm sure they will know when they are NOT in water! LOL
  • quietone said on Feb 23, 2008....

    bluegum ~ haha...that was a funny one!

scipio ~ polar had a good answer for that one (see below)!

  • quietone said on Feb 23, 2008....
polar ~ that is a good question and leads me to another post maybe! hmm..  we believe what we are taught - then we go out in the real world and try to figure it out!  what a clever way of looking at things differntly! It made perfect sense to me!

If I were a shark, or a killer whale, I'd totally eat peoples.  I'll bet they're tasty...

Law of the wild, baby...  Eat or get eaten.  That's just the way it is.

As to bioluminescence, how about these glow in the dark cats?  (link to video)

I've asked most of my questions here, but I'll leave you with one:

"Where do forest rangers go to get away from it all?"

    Okay one more:

"Is Marx's tomb a communist plot?"

    :D

  • quietone said on Feb 23, 2008....

Grape ~ I hear people taste like chicken!  I had a cat that looked just like those white ones that glow in the dark, I don't think mine did.  Forest rangers go to the high desert to get away from it all.  Marx's tombyia my lord tombyia ~

  • quietone said on Feb 23, 2008....
skald ~ well that is a question for moonriver I would think!  He would have an answer to that one!
  • skald said on Feb 24, 2008....
Quiet.  Yes he should hope he will answer us. lol
  • dailyachesandpains said on Feb 24, 2008....

Quiet:  It was rather scientific and I was like "How do I explain this!?"  LOL!

I still want to know in depth on what it's like to live on the border of a timezone.  If you work in one and live in another.  What if a store is built on the line of the timezone?  When do they close and open?  I know that I've asked it a LOOOOONG time ago, but I deleted it!  It still didn't make sense to me anyway, lol.

    Daily

  • quietone said on Feb 25, 2008....
Daily ~ I never really thought about that one...but that would be really odd!  The time zone thing... go to work from east to west and you could leave 45 min after you start and still get there 15 min early! ha!  then on the way home you could leave on time and be late gettng hom by an hours (saying the time diff. was an hour)  I think it is odd for some who live on the boder of a state or even country.. 1/2 the house say is in MA and the other is in VT.. or 1/2 in US and the other in Canada.
  • moonriver said on Feb 25, 2008....
uhhurm... uh... i think i heard my name called...?

skald asks, warum warum warum ist die Banane krumm? in other words, porque es la banana curvo?

moonriver k'ung fu-tzu say, there is scientific answer, then there is street-wisdom answer.

folk answer: banana is curved because it not straight.

scientific answer: banana is curved because series of curvatures in radial direction is one key principle in banana plant growth, may be expressed as series of fractal-math equations. if banana plant growth be modified to be like growth pattern of chili pepper plant, then maybe we get hot red banana grow stiff upright, not crooked. might be yummy to some, but hideous to me.

street-wisdom answer: banana has curved shape to make peeling and swallowing easier... ;-)

me sleepy now, way past bedtime.

  • quietone said on Feb 25, 2008....
moon ~ thanks for your wise words on the crooked banana issue!  Glad we got that cleared up~
  • skald said on Feb 25, 2008....
Moon.  The folk answer and the street wisdom answer I like The scientific is so difficult. The language is so difficult but I think it serves it's purpose to be crooked. lol
    Thanks Moon.

skald ~ now that was a pretty good answer right from the banana man himself!!  :)
