 priv·i·lege (prĭvʹə-lĭj, prĭvʹlĭj) noun

1.                 a. A special advantage, immunity, permission, right, or benefit granted to or enjoyed by an individual, a class, or a caste. See synonyms at right.  b. Such an advantage, an immunity, or a right held as a prerogative of status or rank, and exercised to the exclusion or detriment of others.

I will not lie to you; I read something here yesterday that just about sent me through the roof.  At first I thought it was TNP (The Naked Professor) up to his old tricks again, but it was not.  As I read on, however; and scanned some of the comments I went through a range of emotions, anger not being the least of them.  While I did leave a comment on that post, I did not let loose with both barrels, so to speak.  I decided to sleep on it, and I did. This is what I think about “Angry White Men,” I pity them.

“White Men,” as a group, are traditionally, and historically the most selfish people on the planet, Period. They have never wanted to share anything with anybody. They have taken what they wanted, and up until very recently were not very sorry, or repentant for having committed some of the atrocities that they, as a group, have visited on other peoples.

Now “White men” have fragmented in to several sub-groups one of them being “Angry White Men.” These men, as far as I can tell, are suffering from a lack of privilege.  They forget that the privilege they enjoyed for so many generations was paid for at the “Inconvenience” of the people they’re now angry with.  They also believe that time washes the sins of the past away into a sea of complacency, and forgiveness; it does not.

Now some “White Men” will read this, and fall back on the same tired excuses: “My parents immigrated here, they didn’t own slaves or take the land away from the Natives,” or “I’m not like that. Some of my best friends are (insert the group of your choice).”  If one of these is your answer, or something similar is your answer, check yourself.  Being American is no longer just about being “White.”

Having said all of this I will tell you that I could go on, and on, and on, but I want people to realize something; we, Americans, have and opportunity right here right now to do something that has only been dreamed of.  We -  “Angry White Men,” “Angry Black Men,” Angry Asian Men,” “ Angry Native Men,” - all of us need to come together to reconcile the past so that we can move into the future together as one people, humanity.  Every single person should be angry at injustice.  An injustice against one of us is an injustice against all of us, but; when one group of people claims that they are being victimized above all others, I have to ask why.  Any group of people who think that something on this planet is their birthright scares me, and it should scare you too.  Peace and Long Life

Some good points. Also many of the "great wonders" of the world were built by slaves.
  • LtCmdrWorf1 said on Feb 22, 2008....

That is true many of the great wonder were built by slaves, but the crime of slavery in America was to rob people of who they were; their language, their culture and theri humanity.  going back to Biblical times, slavers were teachers, poets, engineers.  They had value beyond how much cotton they could pick.  Slavery in this country is a history of forced labor to make "Angry White Men" rich.  Peace and Long LIfe

Agree with your argument, but on the same level, the advantage of a certain group of people in today's society should not be based on history; because, as you said, no people group should feel that they have an inherent advantage over any other people group. In that sense, you cannot agree with reparations for slavery, because that is one group of people believing that they are entitled to these privileges. If you don't expect white men to band together for a cause, then I would assume that you also disapprove of exclusive minority groups working toward a certain cause, also.

    sennemaine,

That is sophistry, as well as a non sequiter. Your reasoning is flawed, and  I don’t believe that you have any idea what you’re talking about. Peace and Long Life

Is that not your own words? What exactly are you arguing for? Do you or do you not agree with minority groups that help themselves to special privileges today? How is it any different from whites believing they are being victimized? Just because historically whites have come out on top, they are automatically the enemy today?

What a load of crap, rant all you want but your line of thought is flawed, holding a group of people responsible for "sins" committed hundreds of years ago (when btw they were not committed sins) is insane, i also note a lack of reference to sins committed by peoples of other races upon thier own races. and what about sins comitted by white men on other white men.

And what do I have to be sorry for, I am responsible for what I do, not what people I have no control over do, or what people who died before I was even though of did. collective responsiblity lies in the present with those who have comitted crimes in the here and now, not in the past where there is no recourse to correct it or defend it, or as this like your namesake- Sins of the Father, or in this case great, great great grandfather

Cussane, I'm not sure that Worf meant what you're saying.  It's more of a (great) rant against people who feel entitled to something simply because their ancestors had the gall to steal it in the first place.

It is very easy for the perpetrators of atrocities (or their offspring) to say the past is the past, but the victims never forget.

Worf:  As always, I can count on a clear, well-thought out argument from you.  A shining beacon you are of reason and enlightenment in this otherwise a dim world.

A question:  I've long held the opinion that industrial slavery of the Union was far more caustic than the agrarian slavery of the confederacy.  It's not like the life of a factory worker up in the northeast was any better than the life in the deep south.  Quite the worse, actually.

In no way do I condone slavery of any form.  What I am sick of, however, is this myth that the Civil war was about freeing slaves.  That's not what the war was about, at all.  The war was about consolidating the powers of the Fedgov.  Preservation of the Union.  Whitewashing of history is something that we should always try to be aware of.
  • LtCmdrWorf1 said on Feb 24, 2008....

    Grape,

You couldn't be more right.  the civil war ws about preserving the union, not freeing the slaves.  This is a fact that many people either forget or just plain overlook as being of no particular importance.  It's always a pleasure Grape. as for others, they should stick to reading things at their grade level, like comic books.  Peace and Long Life

have any of you heard of levittown?
and do you know the long reaching effects it has had on america?

specifically on home ownership and credit pertaining to whites and minorities?

that one very first suburb set the stage after world war II ......very very poor people could buy a house for very very cheap because of the veterens laws and grants......well.....

minorities who'd served in the military were awarded the same grants......HOWEVER......this new suburb was closed to minorities.....
and all subsequent suburbs followed the same pattern.

there was no new housing available to minorities.
grants were never used, because you couldn't get a grant until you had a house you were ready to purchase.

so....white families.....got cheap housing......then equity in those houses......
using the equity in the house to send their kids to college....and on and on and on......

it wasn't just slavery and things that happened a very long time ago.....this was the end of the 40's when this happened.....and is the basis for many many white families having the privileges that minority families are lacking.
  • Cussane said on Mar 02, 2008....
I am just getting so sick and tired of this white liberal bullshit, yes, there where injustices done, yes, human beings have fucked up in the past....MOVE ON, you mean to tell me ".....and is the basis for many many white families having the privileges that minority families are lacking." come on I am a catholic kid from belfast, I would put what i grew up with in the 80's vs any minority in the USA in the same period, get over yourself. Please explain how the some people in the USA openly supported the purchase of weapons and funneled cash to the UDA and the UVF and yet you can sit here and tell me me how hard minorities had such a hard time in the USA up to and including the present day, when me in 1983 have to be bused to school in a military convoy simply because of my religion mainly due to the support of people in the USA make me sick, you sit in your glass houses and cry "woe is me" take a good look at what you have supported and what you have then fall down on your knees and thank god you have a country that is somewhat progressive. And before you answer with your hue and crue about injustice and all that crap, guess what, that is the world we live in and your last two presidents havent made much improvements, me on the other hand, moved raised a family, my wife worked while i went to school and now i run a ER department in the largest hospital in Canada, and now my wife is upgrading her education to become a MD, that is called personal responsibilitly and acheivemnt, grow up or piss off Cussane PS: please excuse any spelling nerrors as I have been at the mead most of the night

Only thing worse is the parents that think their kids should have everything go their way regardless of merit.

They'll push the limits further than anyone pushes them for themselves.

    Cussane,

I am not by any means discounting the struggles of Irish Catholics in their own country.  It is a splendid example of white on white violence. You sound angry, and I believe that you have the right to be.  It seems to me though, that the people of Ireland are trying to reconcile.  You cannot do that without confronting and talking about the past injustice.  Past, present, and future are all intertwined.  Without he past and the present there is no future.  We here in this country need very badly to reconcile with our past so that we can move forward as one people one race, human.

Don’t you see, it’s not just about black and white it’s about all of us?  I wish people could get along with each other, I wish we were not separated by culture and privilege, but I like you live in the real world where, unfortunately, people behave badly.  It’s up to us who are not that bad to do something positive; to be a beacon if you will.  So, the way I see it we can wallow in our anger and hate each other, or we can talk about it, reconcile it, and try and live together in peace, else it’s going to destroy us all.  Peace and Long Life

So, you want us to be thankful for living in a progressive country AND you want us to turn a blind eye to injustice?  Perhaps you should think your posts through a bit more before hitting the submit button.

As for "white, liberal bullshit" I've always said that a conservative sees the world the way it really is.  And lacks the courage to do anything about it.
