It's Redneck heaven right across from my driveway today.  A good portion of row crop farm ground sold at auction today.  It went for millions. There were several tracts that sold, but one of the biggest portions is within spitting distance.

Maybe the good ol' boy that bought this ground will have enough clout to get the county to put some gravel down on this freaking road.  I've lost count of the loud piped four wheel drive pickups turning around in my driveway today.  All the other farmers have to come drive by this ground that went for a big price.  My road will be a rutted up mess by morning.  It sounds like one of them has driven up the road too far and gotten stuck.

Thank heaven for tow chains and cell phones.  I don't think they'll be coming to the house to borrow a tractor.

To look at this man who bought the ground today, you would never guess he had millions to spend.  Maybe he doesn't.  Maybe it's all leveraged against what a crop might bring from it. It's really hard to say.  Farming is like any other business if not more so with the risk involved.  If the weather doesn't cooperate, he could be sunk.  I'm glad it is his to worry about and not mine.

I didn't know if you would find this interesting or not, but it's the talk of the town here today.

Otherwise I've been working on my other blog. I've added a new link for herbal supplements from a site I have shopped at for years.  Check it out if it interests you.

Have a great day.

Ah...  Have I ever told you that I absolutely Looove the quaint charm of Midwestern sensibilities?  One of the many reasons why I love Chicago so much.  Even though it's a huge city, that charm and sensibility still remain.

Thanks for this little bit of heaven.  :)

    Grape,
I am so small town that I would probably feel lost in Chicago.  I like visiting cities, but have never lived in one.  Life does have its charming moments here.

Thanks for stopping by.  It's nice to see you back.

oh I so hope that guy intends to farm...wouldn't that stink if he wants to build a ton of homes...you'd get a paved road alright...with a turning lane, a street light and school buses!
I live in suburbia, but I am surrounded by horse farms. It sure is pretty. M

    Mamie,
This guy will farm it.  We are a little too far from town for a housing development just yet.  I'll get to sneeze all summer from the corn pollinating. I wouldn't mind a paved road or two though.  :-)

yea, I remember wanting those simple things for my grandparents...but nothing compared to walking down the hill to their huge garden and picking dinner....maybe you can get on eof those manicurist masks....put on some camo at dusk and sneek over there (next year) for some fresh dinner treats....just looking on the bright side:)) You can have corn fritters, corn chowder, corn on the cob, corn off the cob, corn dip....um, I hope you like corn!!

Hope it's sweet corn and not just field corn!  or seed corn.  It amazes me what people will pay for crop land!  Do you have an ethanol plant anywhere near you?  That is driving the price of corn thru the roof around here.

Mamie, I do like fresh corn on the cob.  :-)  The corn field will be a pretty green, so I guess I can't complain about that.  I can smell it too on the really hot summer days before harvest.  I always think it smells like the crop is baking.  I know...I'm weird.  lol

    Racerboy,
The ethanol plants are popping up everywhere around here.  The land prices have really gone up in the area I live in..  I see how much farming pays from the livestock end of it and I really don't see how anyone makes a profit unless they get into a huge operation with thousands of acres.  With the price of land, fuel, etc, it's a lot of money to have tied up.  Perhaps subsidies help them, but I don't know much about that since my husband doesn't do row crop.

The crop across the road will be field corn.

CW:  I want to stay with you for a night to experience the country life!  I wonder if I could handle it!  The only reason I understood what you were saying is because of a Halmark movie I watched where they were going to lose the farm if the crop didn't bring in enough.

    Do you get tornadoes there?

    Daily,
Yes, we get tornadoes here.  Worrying about the crops and the weather are big topics of conversation here for both the row crop farmers and the cattlemen.  Some years can make or break you.

You would be welcome to make a visit.  :-)

CW:  This might be a silly question...Can the cattle be insured as well as the crops?  Oh, and another question...Do you go to a storm shelter or a basement when there's a tornado warning?  The one thing I'm terrified of from Mother Nature are twisters.  I think I may have died in one in a past life or something.

    Tennulla,
Corn on the cob is a favorite of mine too.  I have have corn on three sides of the place here.  It's all field corn though.

    Daily,
I think there are some instances where the cattle are covered under our blanket farm policy.  As far as I know though, there is nothing similar to crop insurance for cattle.  There is sometimes subsidy funding in drought years, etc., that supplement expenses if you sign up for it.

I have a basement to go to during a storm.  I keep a radio down there so I know what is going on.  I don't hesitate to take cover if a warning is issued.
