short version: the FBI got access to all the e-mail addresses for one site instead of just the one approved by a judge who signed a search warrant. and apparently, this kind of screw-up isn’t exactly uncommon! long version here.

commentary: some people ask why privacy matters, so long as you aren’t doing anything wrong. not to put too fine a point on it, but to me that’s rather a lot like suggesting that it’s OK to have unprotected sex with strangers provided they’re good-looking: people, despite appearances, are periodically fantastically idiotic.

now legally, a situation in which someone has an opportunity to poke around and just look around for whatever seems to be of interest is known as a fishing trip. ever notice how a lot of booze goes on during fishing trips?

Yeah, it's a little scary to know that there are guys (and women) getting off behind a desk looking at personal things that they shouldn't even have access to.  I'm willing to bet that they DID (DO) look at the accounts they shouldn't be in.  I do on-line shopping and get purchase confirmation emails all the time.  Why should they have the right to know what size bed I sleep in, the thread count in the sheets I order or even my bra size apart from the other personal information...

I know they could easily find this personal information out, but why make them not have to work a little harder to find it!

well said, daily. if people wanna know something about me, they can go to the trouble of actually asking in the first place and i'll decide whether i want to provide that information. presumably, law enforcement is a service to the public, not the other way around!

Is Pelosi having a fit over this?  I didn't read your link (guilty as charged).
  • silverwhisper said on Feb 18, 2008....
daily: meh, nancy pelosi appears to serve no function other than a rubber stamp for whatever the exective branch wants to do. i hope she gets voted out for approving mike mukasey and approving of some of bush's excesses. don't worry about not reading the link--at this time of day, i can't blame you. :> sorry you're awake, btw.

    wait--were you cleaning?! :D

ehhhhh, guilty for cleaning too!  BUT, I was only cleaning the fridge doors because of the damn streak marks.  I was searching on line for hours to find the best solution to avoid streaks and to hide minor scratches.  I actually took a shower when I was sleepy and it woke me up.  Have not slept yet!  Thankfully, Little D is over Auntie's house for the night and hopefully another night lol!  School vacation week.

I'm sorry you're awake.  This insomnia is contagious.

You know what's really bugging me?  I'll tell you anyway.  CONGRESS doing those stupid inquests over HGH/Sterroid use by MLB players. Waste of time and money and IMO, there are MUCH more important issues to investigate!!!

Oh, and also I've still got a bit of a stuffy nose and then I got a bloody nose that kind of freaked me out of sleeping. LOL
  • silverwhisper said on Feb 18, 2008....
i knew it! i knew you were cleaning something! :> on the plus side, your home is pretty darned clean at least.

daily, i'm worried about your insomnia. are you taking anything for it? me, i'm awake b/c i had to use the bathroom and once i do that, i can't usually get back to sleep. :\

i dunno, i don't follow baseball so i don't particularly care, but i do know this: a lot of records that were broken in the past decade+ probably shouldn't have been. i mean, who's seriously gonna argue that mcgwire didn't take steroids? look at the man!

if baseball wants to call itself america's pastime, well, they better clean up their act, and shoulda done it themselves before the government decided to get involved. frankly, i think that this is an indictment of the commissioner and MLB more than it is anything else, you know?

Well, the insomnia has a bit to do with anxiety and OCD.  If I have something pop into my mind that I don't like, I'm afraid to go to sleep and dream about it.  With the OCD, my house is NEVER clean enough.  I will often make my way upstairs and think about what I cleaned the day before that "needs" to be cleaned before I close my eyes.  I'm up right now, almost 4 AM because I "needed" to wash the floors, but I had to dust first.  I do take medication, but I can pshych myself out of believing I'm tired.  I was determined to sleep around midnight, but then I was afraid of the nightmares.  Then, thinking about the floors being contaminated from food that Little D. may have dropped while eating and that I may have missed something during the last mopping.  Oh, and the bathroom thing in the middle of the night...I have that issue too!

I wouldn't argue that McGwire took steroids.  My issue is that HGH wasn't illegal back then.  So, why ask now?  Just ban it, develop testing and randomly test the players.

In my opinion, the government shouldn't have EVER gotten involved.  Don't get me wrong, I'd like to know about it, but having the Government handle this when there are many more important things to worry about...it infuriates me.  HGH wasn't even banned back in McGwire days.  So, what was the point, the first go around, if it wasn't illegal?

I've got SO much dirt on Roger Clemens that would disgust you.  I laughed through his entire testimony.  Not that I know anything about his shooting up with anything, more of his personal life that I wish I could spill on.  I do not believe him for one second.  He kept mixing up his answers when he heard the same question, but rephrased by a different member of Congress.

Sorry if my thoughts came out totally wrong.  No sleep, medicated and it happens, lol!

happens to me, too, daily. :>

while i think that the government shouldn't be involved, either, if you're a major industry and there's a fear that there's something corrupt going on, the government is gonna get involved at some point. mr. daily works in financial services as i recall so he knows all about the value of self-regulating, right?

so now that they are...now what?

You're right, the government will get involved at some point.  The way I see it, they wouldn't have if it wasn't for ONE book written by non other than Jose Canseco.  That's where I can mentally track all this back to.  I could be missing something, I'm only human.

Yes, you're right about Mr. Daily.  His beef is the cable companies and no competition in our area, as well as others.  He speaks of the old AT&T days quite often, and honestly, he uses too many big words for me to understand, lol.

Exactly...now what?  Nothing came out of it, IMO. Maybe the Hall of Fame will have to use your favorite asterisks now, ;-)

This precisely why we have to keep a tight rein on our government and have plenty of oversight.  The FBI, CIA, NSA, etc. may think they have the country's best interests at heart to start with, but we all know how power gets abused.

And speaking of FISA, I wish I would have caught the name of whomever was speaking (it was some congress person) but I heard him say that we need the Patriot Act provisions re-instated because getting a FISA warrant is too much of an impediment to law enforcement.  I literally laughed out loud when I heard that.  First of all, a FISA warrant is pretty easy to obtain.  Second, yeah, why not just eliminate all laws that might make it inconvenient for an agency to perform illegal search, seizure, etc.  What a dolt.
  • silverwhisper said on Feb 20, 2008....
daily: it's goofy, this entire thing. heh...maybe they will have to use 'em. frankly, i think that MLB should. :>

kelly: that idiot congressperson was whining about the difficulty of getting a FISA warrant? it's obviously some bush lapdog.
