Patriotism is 10,000 Germans shouting their adoration of their Fuehrer and God, Hitler. Perhaps worst of all, patriotism is a stadium full of Canadians "singing" Oh... Canada.... you blah blah blah blah blahhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Patriotism is a dangerous thing, to the eardrums if nothing else.
Patriotism is a bunch of noodleheads at a baseball game standing up in the middle of the seventh inning and murdering a stupid song about oceans white with foam when they should be shutting the hell up and munching on overpriced hot dogs.
Patriotism is getting your children, when they are too young to think for themselves, to put their hands over their hearts and mumble Ipledgeallegiancetotheflagoftheunitedstatesofamerica. Andtotherepublicofrichardstands. Onenationundergodindivisiblewithlibertyandjusticeforall.
Patriotism is a lot of bullshit. Its aim is to make people do what their fuehrers tell them to do. Its technique is to assault the minds of little children and force feed them the absolute crap that their own country is the same thing as God. So it becomes a sin to question your government, your rulers.
Where the Bible says "Thou shalt have no other gods before me", patriotism goes purposely in direct opposition to that and says "Obey me first, for I am a god too".
Jesus was asked whether one should obey God or Rome, more or less, and his answer was basically that in financial matters you had damn well better obey Rome.
The mind-numbing bullshit that we were all subjected to as children has warped most people into believing that Uncle Sam is something good, instead of the greedy fuck he really is. He's just some fucking dude who wormed his way into a nice fat comfy position of being able to take advantage of us. He's some prick.
Bush has NOTHING to do with God. He had you fooled there for a while, didn't he? He's a lying prick who doesn't give a shit whether you live or die. He's not your buddy. He's an incompetent gonzo who doesn't know what the fuck he's doing.
In short, patriotism is a load of bullshit, and it has you good. It has you believing in it. Poor baby. Take a bubble bath. Play with your duckie. Be a good little boy or girl and worship America as you were taught to do. Then go watch cartoons. Attababy.
No, you're not "supposed to" obey your leaders. You're supposed to try to prevent them from robbing you. They are scumbags. Lying thieving scumbags. The lake turns over, and the shit rises to the top. People in power use that power to enrich themselves at your expense. It's human nature, particularly if you are a selfish amoral bastard, which is what they are. The tsar of Russia - scumbag. Patriotism means worshipping a scumbag and supporting his right to rob you blind.
Don't trust anyone who waves a flag at you. Figure out his angle. It's all a pile of bullshit. Countries are just made of people, so forget all this God stuff. God has nothing to do with it. Patriotism is Against God, not in support of God. Patriotism is the main competition for God, the main target of the commandment Thou shalt have no other gods before me. It isn't Ahura Mazda anymore, he's pretty well passe. It's that flag-waving, smiling, shifty, greedy fuck Uncle Sam who is worming his way into your head so he can steal your money.
Hey, Pinky, your country is no better than the one next door. The only thing good about it is that it isn't anywhere near as bad as a lot of the others. Most of the world is so fucked up that America is actually one of the best countries in the world to live in. What a fuckin' world. Hey, how bout a real national pension plan and some decent dental and healthcare for all, ya motherfuckin' ...... (need a noun here).

7- Its the leaders. Like you said, its the leaders. The ones who use patriotism as a tool for nothing more than propaganda for their own ends.
Everyone's problem with leaders is the nature of the beast for wanting to be the leader in the first place. The ones who want to be the leaders are born with an ego as large as a bus, no real compassion for people, greed to match, and all are bottomless pits. The need for attention and power flows like rivers through their veins which are the conduits to feed that ego and vanity.
There are many very capable people for great leaders in this country, but they don't ride that bus. They don't want to swim in the stench of politicians. They won't cater to corporate sociopaths. They quite simply won't sell their soul to the highest bidder or lie out their ass for another vote.
So we are left at the mercy of the party of the cockroaches and the party of the dung beetles. They are all cowards who make policy behind closed doors in dark rooms with the rest of the insects. Then they crawl out from under their rock, put on their expensive suits and present the people with their latest lying pile of crap.
I think it will always be this way.
True patriots are loyal to their family, friends, and the good in people everywhere. Problem is, none of those will ever be leaders.

Kruu, when I say that America is one of the better places to live, I'm comparing it to shitholes like India, China, Arabia, Myanmar, Congo, Sudan. Places where they are so ignorant that they leave female babies out to die (India), have no conception of individual human rights (China), treat women like shit (Arabia), treat everyone like shit (Myanmar), mutilate children for diamonds (Congo), or engage in genocide and slavery (Sudan). Much of the continent of Africa has a major problem with healthy drinking water. Mexican cops will rape tourists while detaining their husbands. In Thailand they force young girls into prostitution slavery and when the girls run away they are caught BY THE COPS and raped and beaten BY THE COPS and then returned to their pimps to get raped and beaten again and then sent out to work, bruises and all. Isn't it pathetic when America has to be numbered among the better places to live? But actually it is. So are the places you've gone. As for me finding my way, I'm not too good at that. -

None of it was meant to stimulate your thinking. It was all meant sincerely. It wasn't an emotional rant. It was a cool assessment of our situation. Re-read what Beyond The Veil said. I could have signed that too. Our planet is a mess because the people are a mess. Selfishness is the culprit. Our leaders should have the attitudes of Lincoln and Mother Theresa, government for the people, shepherds of God's flock. But instead they are a smelly pile of selfish creeps who are after the power, the money, the pension, the perks, the ego, and they spend the lives of our kids like small change to keep the profits flowing to the people they truly represent, which do not happen to be you and me.
When we were kids they filled our heads with a lot of happy horseshit about how wonderful our country is. It's just an ordinary country filled with ordinary people. The best thing about it is that it is not Hitler's Germany, not Stalin's Russia, not Mao's China. The best thing about it is that it isn't as hellish as it might be. It's only good in comparison to places that are unspeakably worse. Why should we be comparing ourselves to the worst? We should be comparing ourselves to better than the best, to our own ideals, to our own sense of Godliness. Why look down? Look up. -

Patriotism is a creampuff word for nationalism. They both mean the same. I'm with H.G. Wells on this. Nationalism is a bunch of crap. And if you put sugar on it and call it either patriotism or a donut with powdered sugar, whatever you want to call it, it's still a bunch of crap.
I agree with John Lennon that countries are bullshit. Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too. Yup. I'll buy it all. I'm with Johnny there, or as his friends called him, Lenny.
I believe in God, or if you prefer to drop that word, you can call it Love, or Justice, or Kindness, they're all synonyms for God in my book.
And I believe you can only have one God, and patriotism is a rival of God, and patriotism is a bunch of fucking chimps jumping up and down around their watering hole to make sure no other tribe of chimps gets the water.
There is Never a reason to place patriotism above justice, or love, or kindness, or God. You don't betray God. There is only one allegiance. You can't have two. And they aren't twins. For example, patriotism demanded that we fight the Vietnam War, because Uncle Sam was waving that flag like a motherfucker. God demanded that we don't. Take your pick, Uncle Sam or God. Tough choice? I don't think so.
Which choice would Jesus have made? He was a pretty smart guy. You think he would have dropped napalm to burn the skin off little Asian children? For what? What the fuck was that about? How come we sent troops halfway around the world to deny the Vietnamese people their freedom? Patriotism, you can flush that crap. Worship God and God alone, and if you don't like that terminology, then just do justice, show kindness and love.
One sad thing about it is that almost all people are just too fucking dumb to know right from wrong. -
