I don't really like the phrase "piece of shit" much. It raises more questions than answers. First of all, how big a piece? And who cut it into pieces? And why just a piece of shit? Why not the whole thing?

Actually I think it has become a bit of a cliche. One of those mindless phrases that substitute for what we really mean. I think "bitch" is also a cliche. If we stop to think about it, what we usually mean would probably include words like arrogant, annoying, obnoxious.

In addition, I think the phrase "piece of shit" lacks an adjective. It is much more complete with at least one adjective.

Like saying God bless you if someone sneezes. A cliche. The hell with God bless you. The person sneezed. So what.

Maybe it was a sun sneeze. Maybe some dust rose and it was a dust sneeze. Maybe it was the first in a series of sneezes, a serial sneezer.

Did you ever notice, since we find ourselves on the topic of shit, that with some people it smells really bad, to the point of running out of the restroom gasping and holding your breath, but with other people it is no big deal? I believe that if the odor is really vicious, that is saying something about the person's digestive system, diet, or both. It is not supposed to be that bad. It is supposed to be "that really smells like shit" but it is not supposed to make you want to hold your breath and run for dear life.

When someone says "You are a piece of shit" perhaps what they really mean is "You have annoyed me, and I consider you relatively obnoxious, when compared to others I've known."

I don't care for the cliche "piece of shit" either.

lenny -- you make me laugh, dude. (and coming from me, that's a huge compliment, i assure you... :-)

you're utterly right about the need for an adjective. in those rare moments when i feel the need to hock out a sincerely-meant obscenity, i use "you pathetic piece of shit..." if it was a hypocritically-meant obscenity, i would have used "you wonderful piece of shit..."

    :-)

Lbno ~ now, if one has been a parent around an infant one knows what a piece of shit is that gets on to ones fingers or under the nails when changing the diaper...now that is a piece of shit...down right shitty shit at times!  I have also worked in a nursing home and had found a few big pieces of shit there too.....so there you have it.. I have let a few pieces of shit get under my skin a time or two!! I have even stepped into shit but have not very often come out smelling like a rose~

Well I put a smile on Destiny's face, I found something in common with Dee, I cracked Moonriver up, and I reminded Quietone of some wonderful memories in her past. There, I've done my job.

You always crack me up, Mr7!
I hate that phrase, too. There must be a better way to insult the crap outta somebody.   Wait a minute!  What's wrong with "crap"?  It's a perfectly good, albeit underused word.
     "You piece of crap!"
Okay, never mind...it just doesn't have the same bite to it.
  • quietone said on Feb 16, 2008....
twyla ~ now that was BAD......"you piece of crap...doesn't have the same 'bite' to it"  ewwwee!  Can't help it, I am a sick individual today.

How about you insufferable three-brain-cell fruit of the loom piss for lunch pinheaded irrational hostile hematoma?

Or, if an insult can only be satisfactory if it relates to the toilet, how about you sinking, diving, warm, submarine doody?

I think it's a nice mix of adjectives and nouns. I also recommend a cheerful "You eat doodies" or an old favorite like "Your mother wears combat boots" or "Your mother rides shotgun for the knish man". Or the helpful "Go shine shoes on 42nd Street".

Yeah I agree with that lfbno7...Why "Pieces" of shit?  Why not the whole turd?  (ewww)
  • Twylarants said on Feb 16, 2008....
Thanks Q'one, what was I thinking? Ewww!!!

Then how about "Go piss up a rope!"?
No idea what it means, but it meets the requirements of an insult involving bodily waste and the elimination thereof, the same, and of which...ahem...and there's the rope part...
I should check the anonymous box for this one.

I was pissed at a moron/troll on one of my other online haunts, and I called him a piece of shit.  I felt guilty afterward because the shit did nothing to deserve being insulted that way.

Hi to all my friends here.
  • FutureGoddess said on Feb 17, 2008....

That was rather amusing LFBNO - it is ironic because I was just discussing insults with some people yesterday.   There is a word that Jane Fonda inadvertantly used on live television this week to discribe a part of the female anatomy.  Most people (women?) find this word to be the most offensive word in the world, however when you actually know a few of them as personalities, you stop being offended.  I refer, of course, to C U Next Tuesday.  Now, I use the acronym so as not to offend others.

Here's my question - what is the word that is as offensive to describe men?  "Dick" doesn't cut it - so what's just as bad?

  • lfbno7 said on Feb 17, 2008....
    I would guess "fagit".
