Hi everyone, wow!  I've been reading throughout and see a lot of posts about ppl who have many ID's.  I want everyone to know...I am a bonafide NEWBIE!  LOL.  I hadn't been a part of blogs... ever.  Except for reading them on myspace.  This is my first time at blogging and I think it's really cool to have a place to come and express yourself openly.

I was also reading some heated posts to a member about leaving the community.  Wow!  I don't know what it's about, I think I need to dig further if I have the stomach for it.

In my opinion I feel people do have a right to speak their mind, however they should realize when asking others opinion, they need to be prepared for the worst.

With that said, I've been in friendship groups where this sort of thing became an issue and it never ended well.  Soon the whole friendly environment was turned upside down.  One person's knee jerk smart ass post or response started a war, one left and in principle so did the next, until it wasn't a haven of friendship anymore.  It was a group of stragglers who hardly ever posted or had any real thing to say. Unfortunately, It died. :(

My point is, even though we have the freedom of speech it is sometimes best to exercise self control and tact when posting or answering a personal attack.  I only mention this because I've noticed a circle of good friends here.  We all know there is one or two in every crowd who like to stir things up.  I've been there in the heat of battle to defend myself and others, but learned the hard way it wasn't worth what was lost. :(

As for the multiple ID's...WHY do people do this???

Hello, Ms.!  For the most part things around here are pretty civilized.
It's kind of strange, a few months back bloggers were complaining that things were slowing down.  Now, there's controversy at every turn!

    welcome-
when you are part of an uncensored blogging community, you are bound to have differences of opinion.  but everyone has a right to say their own thing in their own space.  and you have the right to block them on yours and ignore them.
i guess it goes to your own personal values how you interact with others-
and also i suppose how much importance you place on those in this community who you really don't know-

    Absolutely SL  :)

But, why do some ppl use multiple ID's?  No one answered.  I'm curious because, in the group I was in, a few ppl did this, but made the rest of us aware it was them.  During a couple of blow-outs a couple of people used them to be allies to themselves.  LOL!

Although, it wasn't hard to figure out, it's still pretty lame.

Well, there are some people who's identities are known or discovered by people and they sometimes take on another persona in order to still have anonymity.
There are also those, who use them for nefarious purposes.
  • MsImmortality said on Feb 15, 2008....

Yeah, I've been reading the 'current events' going on and came across some pretty bazaar interactions with people. : s   I can now see what is going on with some ppl and the different id's.

It's unfortunate that some would result to that for no reason except to fool others.  I think for myself I would rather just pack it up and move on than to play those games.  jeez!

Thanks for the answers everyone :)

ms immortality, welcome to sc enjoy yourself,as to multiple id's ihave 1 only i dont go anon and if i was painted black on a pitch black night you'd know it was me

  • travelr712 said on Feb 16, 2008....
just to say it publically, because this post is about alternate id's, i do not have one. everything i post or comment is always under my travelr screen name. i do that on purpose, because if i have something to say, i want everyone to know who said it. if i don't want my screen name associated with a particular comment, i just don't make that comment.

Bluegum and Travelr...I agree.  What's the point?  Seems it would be a better way to make enemies than friends.  :- /

MI: i think there are many reasons people have multiple ids, not just here but in other online sites.

i think alot of people look at this like a 'game'-
    creating different personalities is amusing.

i have kids, a husband, a full time job, an elderly mother, a sick sister, and a house to keep up.  i have no time for games.
but again, it all goes to why you're here-

SL...very true, and with the "Games" aside, I think some people may do it for legitimate reasons too.  Like being stalked or the like.  But I hear ya, I don't think I could keep up the energy it would take ;)

    Welcome MsImmortality.

You asked a question that I have often asked myself.  I have one good friend on SC that used an alt when he had done something in his life that he himself wasn't sure why he had done it, or what to do about it.  He adopted an alt identity because he felt like two people...kind of fractured, if you will.  He told us who he was, his alt, etc. and when he had worked the situation and relationships out, in his real life, he was once again "himself".

I think some people with alt identities have real mental problems.  So I try to be careful with them, as I see them as fragile and wounded.  They can also be very manipulative...alts I mean.  I don't like that, and I tend to avoid alts in preferance for people that are more "real" and honest.  But then, this is the internet after all.

Best wishes, and keep your own head on straight even when others are losing theirs ; )

    Have fun and be yourself.

    Welcome, again.

MsImm, I am really sorry that you arrived here when all this nonsense is going on.

As far as alts go, I think there are other reasons why people would have alts other than causing havoc.  I know of someone who has an alt because they have friends and family who know their username here and sometimes this person wants to share stuff that they dont want those people to know about esp. if is about those people; to me that is reasonable.

    I wish you happiness here!

See why having many folks with many perspectives is a valuable thing?  Thanks for sharing that polarheart.

    Bless you all,

  • MsImmortality said on Feb 16, 2008....

Polar and truthsayer.... I understand completely, yeah, I would use an alt id if I felt I needed privacy from family or what not (although I would let my friends know).  Truthsayer...I know just what you mean about the "mental" thing.  The group I had mentioned before had someone come in under other id's when there was a confrontation, and it was obvious it was the same person!  I remember feeling a bit sorry for them for making an ass of themselves. :- (

But, we just have to be careful, and I suppose this is a epidemic in all groups not just this one, as you said... this IS the internet after all. :-s

Thank you for the warm welcome.  I can see many good souls here. :-)

as others have noted, there are sometimes legitimate reasons for using alts. but sadly, it seems more often than not, that isn't the case.
