I've been thinking about trees a lot lately, largely for reasons too personal to share here, but it occurred to me to ask:

If you were a tree, what would you be? An oak? Ash? Elm?

I know I would be a willow. I've always felt especially drawn to them, for reasons I can't fully explain. (Plus, they're beautiful, and who wouldn't want to be a pretty tree, right? ;-) Well, if you had to be a tree anyway...) The willow is also very sacred.

So what would you be, and why?

    pine tree. i can't fully explain why but pine trees exude a feeling of calm amidst chaos. to me, they symbolize the characteristics of being cool and collected. they look refreshing, too.

    Oak--strong and tall

    I would be a Myrtlewood tree.  I don't know if I spelled it right..but they only grow in 2 places in the world I am told....they have a redish bark, are strong with beautiful grain..they are unique inside and out

    infernal- A Redwood. They grow one place in the world and are to me the most beautiful, strong and mighty and their height commands their magnificence.

    Maybe I'd be an elm tree? I can say why for sure, but it's a good strong tree that can weather any storm.

    A magnolia.  I will literally park my car and enjoy the sight of a beautiful magnolia.  I love that in the dead of winter (at least in CA) they bring forth these huge white blooms that are beautiful in their simplicity.
  • MyHeartAches said on Feb 15, 2008....
    I, too, would be a weeping willow tree
  • Zayda said on Feb 15, 2008....
    Ahh..U-I, but would you be an American Magnolia or a Japanese Magnolia, while both can have white blooms, they are different trees. :)

    I would be Weeping Cherry tree. I love them for the way they look, with just the leaves on them, and the shape of them, much like a weeping willow, but I love the blooms they get on them as well, which can range from white to pale-almost-white-pink to soft pink to a brighter pink?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Feb 15, 2008....
    I didn't realize there was a japanese magnolia.  Both are beautiful, but I like the american better.  It has a romantic look about it that I don't see in the japanese magnolia.

     would be an Oak.

    Strong, large and offering shade and shelter to those in need.

    Infernal, before I even opened this post I knew I would say a Willow Tree. . .and then I saw you said you would be one too!  In South Africa we call them weeping willows.

    Willow trees have something intense about them; like you want to be with them. . .I dont really know how to explain it.  What I love about Willows is that you usually find them next to water. . .like they're plugged into the life source.  And they also produce a lovely cool shade in summer :-)

    I hope that is one of pines, upright, not afraid of the cold ...

    i don't think i'd want to be a tree.........i think i've already done that before......no proof of course.

    but my favorite trees are willow, dogwood, spruce, and craggy old fruit trees.
  • destinydiva said on Feb 15, 2008....
    I'd be a willow tree too, I have always been drawn to them, i remember my mum and dad looking at houses when I ws about 8 or 9 and I prayed we chose this one house,  because I loved the weeping willow in the back garden..I pictured myself sitting under it talking to myself!! and we did buy that house...and I spent many hours sitting under it.....  I even said goodbye to the tree when we moved...I still miss that tree :-)

    I would be a willow tree. My mother always had us pick a willow branch for switching when were naughty as kids. After she passed it became a reminder of right and wrong for me. The weeping willow is a nurturing tree. It provides lots of shade and seclusion for small creatures. I think I am a nurturing soul.

    I love all trees, so it's hard to say--but I like Silverleaf poplars, big old sturdy oaks, dogwoods....But if the question is what kind I would be if I could?  Well, then the biggest and the best--a giant Redwood!

    I would be a Willow. I find them peaceful, and sheltering. As a child, I played beneath them.

    A one that walks and talks that doesn't get cut down or burnt, so people could say, "Holy crap!  A talking tree!", but not come after me with pitchforks and torches because I would be an abomination and an affront to God.  An affront to God!!!! {shakes fist in air}

    I think I'll be an oak tree. They seem like a wise tree. And they give good shade too.

    On the subject of trees, here is a masterpiece on A Tree by Joyce Kilmer

    I think that I shall never see
    A poem as lovely as a tree.
    A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
    Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
    A tree that looks at God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
    A tree that may in Summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;
    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.
    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.

    *The reason why God made trees for you and me
    His reminder of how best to let nature be!

    *the last two lines are FD's adaptation

    some of the time i'd like to be an araucaria pine; at other times, a bamboo grove. don't ask me why... they're both deeply embedded in my childhood. too many reasons to enumerate here... :-)

    Lots of interesting responses (and quite a few willows :))! I'll try to comment individually later, but I wanted to say thanks for all of the replies. There are so many beautiful and interesting trees out there, and I was curious as to what people would identify with and why. Pretty cool!
