one simple thing.

the more i get to know you,
the more i strain to understand,
the more i see there's so much more
that i don't know, can't understand,
and may never realize
about you.
and me.

but i know one simple thing.

you are the ocean tide.
now gently lapping sandy shores,
now angrily smashing into rocks,
now quietly receding to unknown coves.

and me,
a seething island volcano.
now lying dormant upon earth's lap,
now spouting sulfur into the skies,
now pouring magma into your depths.

and i've no choice but become a mass
of cooling rock and churning steam,
turning to random thoughts that fall asleep
among your watery labyrinths.

do i really know you?
will your salty sprays be always there
to soothe my primeval pains?
can my lava flows direct your tides?
or will i stop in final rest, mere sediment,
a new layer to coat your ancient seabed?

and yet,
in the ultimate sense,
there's nothing lost.

the raging volcano rumbles on
to join the age-old rhythm
of your graceful ocean tides
in a dance that doesn't know
where next to go
and how to end
as yet.

very nice poetry, gave my lovely images in my mind and i felt a bit of sadness at the beginning.
  • moonriver said on Feb 14, 2008....
brit, this poem was partly inspired by -- of all things -- a national geographic feature about how underwater volcanoes spout endless streams of lava which ultimately help build up the seabed. it's all geological. at first i had wanted to give it a smart-aleck title like, "volcanology, meet oceanography ..." :-)

partly, this poem was also inspired by a discussion i had with a dear friend about the tide leaving shore, only to come back again and again. my inner geologist reminds me that the configuration of a coast helps shape the tides, which in turn help shape the coastline, in an endless dance.

flighty romance, meet hard-rock geology... :-)

    thanks for dropping by, brit.

wow, amazing how something like that can inspire the poet within !!!
    i love it !!
of course, i look forward to more writings that come outta nature like this one :-)

daily -- i'm glad you liked it, my friend. sometimes this crazy mind of mine finds a morsel of poetry in the most routine stuff of daily life too. i once wrote a doggerel poem about ascorbic acid. you don't believe it? here... LOL.

brit -- oh, you should read my poems about spiders, butterflies, frogs... i'm like a young boy out in the moors. you'll never know what will come out of my pockets hahaha.

I really like this, moon. :) It's a lovers' dance and a duel of cosmic forces in the same moment, and maybe those are the same thing anyway.

MOON:  LOL!  I just read it and I TOTALLY believe you now!  I had to look at it twice.  I contemplated getting out my dictionary in order to follow.
  • moonriver said on Feb 15, 2008....
infernal -- i find your description of it very apt, my friend: "a lovers' dance and a duel of cosmic forces," the same moment, maybe the same thing. much of nature's dialectics are like that. yin in endless duel with yang, macrocosm dwelling in microcosm... :-)

daily -- i wince and cringe each time i re-read that poem. it was fun writing it and reading the comments, though... :-)

  • moonriver said on Feb 16, 2008....
brit -- yes, i noticed. thanks for reading my other pieces. i'm glad you enjoyed them. i'm thinking to write other poems about worms, lizards, and other denizes of my pocket underworld... :-)

alyss -- thank you, my friend. i noticed a nice poem addressed to you in my anonymous lovenotes blog. i think i have an idea of your secret admirer, and wish more happy valentines for you and him in the years ahead... ;-)

trebleclef -- thank you. to say that the embrace of the volcanic lava and the ocean tide is "moving" must be the height of terse poetic understatement. i like that... :-)

  • brit said on Feb 16, 2008....
moonriver~if you write such poetry, i will read. no matter what it is about :-)

I just came across you moonriver (I noticed a comment you left on L1qu1d's blog) and decided to read. This poem is very sensual, sexual even. You have a way with words.

muun:  I'm so glad to read that you have an inner geologist.  That more than makes up for that inner engineer crack you made the other day.  ;-)

How sad that you've had to spout sulfur into the skies.  I hope you soon find some depths into which you may pour your boiling magma, my friend.  I know it's not easy to do all  that laundry.

You know, lately I've been growing a new appreciation for poetry.  I never liked it much before, but it's finding a place in my life.  Maybe it was all you SC poets that inspired me.  Thanks.  :)
  • kruuyai said on Feb 18, 2008....
muun:  BTW, have you read anything by John McPhee?  He writes novels in which geology plays a major role.  Good stuff.. e.g. "Rising From the Plains,"  "The Control of Nature" and many more.

let me be honest. i'm having a hard time thinking of nice and proper ways to reply to all your kind and humbling comments about my poem. so here's what i'll do. i'll spice it up with the most domesticated, un-literary stuff that i've been doing for the past week.

cw -- thank you, my friend. i'm glad it moved you. right now i'm frying some fish marinated and rolled in flour (i'm shuttling back and forth between gas stove and computer). want some? yum. i hope it moves you too :-)

destiny -- thank you, my friend. you think i'm gifted? well, wait until you have a taste of my latest recipe, to be served personally by yours truly in his famous gingham apron (which i'm proudly wearing right now... :-)

  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2008....
brit -- ok, iiii aaaammmm shouttiiiiing noooowwww, because there's poooooeeetrrryyy invoooollvved! lol ok, i think that's the last batch of the fish. i bought  them straight from the fish market stalls and cleaned them myself. there's poetry in that too :-)

heretoreflect -- right now i'm marinating a kilo of thinly-sliced beef in soy sauce, garlic, pepper, and sprite. (yes, sprite.) the supply should last me the entire week. you sensed the sexual undertones? oh. you mean the hot magma pouring into her depths. i thought nobody would notice. btw, magma rhymes with smegma, but the imagery stinks... :-) thanks for dropping by.

  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2008....
ed -- oh, let me say simply that she and i occasionally flirt with each other in public to perplex everyone about the real nature of our friendship. and hey, i have good news. in the past few weeks, i've become more domesticated, watched more rachel ray, and am turning into a foodie like you... :-)

memyself -- thank you, my friend. i'm glad the poem had that effect on you... just be on the lookout for hot magma. i hope you had a nice milk bath last night... * see ya

  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2008....
hey kruu -- my inner geologist (and biologist) is stronger than my inner engineer. i hope that's good news for you. and don't worry about boiling magma ... this volcano knows how and where to spew it. my laundry's safely done, dried and folded a couple of days ago, thank you.

i'm on a break, my friend. want some tea and crackers? let's discuss more about john mcphee...

vipquibin -- thank you for your nice comment. i think i got the gist of your story. i see you're an authentic kung fu hero. wonderful sentence, yes. the envy of the poem. yes indeed. ((reviews manual of chinese syntax))

  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2008....
living4u -- and how are you too? i hope i kicked your ass all the way to china, in the right direction... :-) thanks for dropping by. i'm pouring some wild mountain tea into a couple of cups. wanna taste of highland kung fu? here... :-) haaaa-eeeeiiii-yaaa!!!!

seer -- i think you got the allegory mostly right. the only problem is when the volcano doesn't want to move on, and spews molten lava left and right, splattering the eyes of curious onlookers. it can get messy. here, have some chopped and pickled banana blossoms, which i harvested just a few days ago ... :-)

  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2008....
battycat -- hey, did you know that i rarely have accidents? yesterday was one of those rare moments. it rained off-season, it was dark, and i slipped on a muddy unconcreted part of the trail while holding an umbrella and flashlight. but no worry, just a scratch. thanks for dropping by... :-)

adyaz -- you've come to the right place. i'm the leader. what can i do for you, sir? (or is it ma'am?) as my honored guest, would you care to join me for dinner? tonight i'm having sizzling magma on coals. i'm told it's a delicacy in the region where you come from.

  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2008....
merlin -- i rarely have accidents, but yesterday, i dropped the heavy chopping board onto my left foot. ouch. thanks for dropping by. tea? coffee? crackers?

yakik -- the other day, i harvested a bowlful of wild tomatoes that look like tiny berries, ripening on the vine. i munched on them raw like a gracile australopithecine. there's a handful left. want some? yum... thanks for dropping by.

  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2008....
whew. i think i've replied to all. have i missed any one? i think i missed one. yup, one that i badly miss. what do you think?
  • Mamie said on Feb 24, 2008....
holy Max-moly! How have I not subscribed before now??? Guilty! this is a lucky day for me :)))))
  • moonriver said on Feb 24, 2008....
whoa, mamie, how are you doing? i knew someone precious was missing. no, my friend, this is a lucky day FOR ME. correction: this is my second lucky day. yesterday, my son gave me a bouquet of flowers as belated b-day gift. thanks for dropping by, mamie... :-)
