It trivializes, tokenizes, commercializes that mysterious delicious capricious salacious gloriously complex thing called love.
It caricatures the maelstrom of raw emotions that sweep through my mind, body and soul, into a cardboard cutout of a red heart pierced by a stupid cupid arrow.
It measures a lifetime's worth of joy and sadness, pleasure and pain, laughter and tears, into a day of flowers and chocolates that wilt and melt by day's end.
Not to mention the fact that I don't have a date on February 14. Or the day after. Or on any day in the foreseeable future. Grrrrr.
That is why I utterly hate hate hate Valentine's Day.
BUT HEY...
A man's gotta have some an excuse to have a bit of fun, no? And so, in lieu of a real-life date, allow me to offer you...
Round 2 of DJ Moonriver's Anonymous Lovenotes.
(I did Round 1 in January last year. It was moderately successful.)
The idea is pretty simple. There are only three guidelines (I won't call them rules, even though I reserve the option to draw a line somewhere):
- Your comment must be anonymous.
I will delete non-anonymous comments unless they're really good. But
you can end your comment with any tagname of your choice. (See my
sample below)
- Your comment must be explicitly addressed to another blogger. This means that your comment must start with "To [name of SC blogger]: "
- No bad-mouthing allowed.
I can't impose a rule defining subject matter, but I hope that your
comments are made along the lines of friendly banter, love notes, sweet
nothings,
honest inquiry, thoughtful criticism, rather than insult.
This is your chance. Grab it! Tell your crush (in full public view) how you really feel about her (or him). Give someone you barely know a well-deserved praise and pat on the back. Offer someone you had a tiff with a long-overdue apology. Reveal a secret you've been wanting to tell everyone.
So there. Here's my alternative to Valentine's Day. Peace. Love. Understanding. Forgiveness. Hope. Happiness. Unity. All-night trampolines and hammocks for two. Red wine and Bach available on demand. Hurry while supply lasts.
Soulcast rocks. Valentines don't.
(The first and 3rd comments are mine... just to show you how interesting conversations could emerge while remaining anonymous. All of us here at SC are already anonymous, but I mean doubly anonymous.)
