The Prayer by Celine Dion / Andrea Bocelli

I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go.
And help us to be wise in times when we don't know.
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way.
Lead us to a place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we'll be safe.

These are the lyrics of "The Prayer" as sung by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. This is a super great song most specially if you've seen the music video as sung by these two outstanding performers.

So when I heard this being played by the funeral car as we made our way to the cemetery, I thought that using it as a theme song sort of took the mystique off from the song. But when you analyze the above lyrics, you'd think it was written for a funeral rites theme.

I would like to re-write it this way; this is FD's version of The Prayer

I pray you'll never tire, to watch and see us grow
Enlighten us at times and guide us where to go
This to You we pray, we'll never go away
Lead us to Your Place, grant us with Your Grace
Bless us with Your Love always!

Now if you were to re-write the lyrics of "The Prayer" how shall you compose it? Or if you'd rather tell me, what is your prayer?

Geeze, you really do put the most interesting questions out there. I've never heard the song, but now I'll have to go and find it because both vocalists are amazing. The lyrics really ARE perfect for funeral rites~! Wonder if the composer/lyricist had that (or something similar) in mind?

Your re-write is beautiful, and really such a comforting piece. We tried, and it shifted, but kept more-or-less the same meter. Circus's version:

I swear to keep you in our mind, and help your memory grow,
Tell others of one truly wise in times not long ago,
To let old stories whispered, once again be spoke aloud,
So, lead us to a place, where all known songs and tales are found
and let life not be forgotten.

Random, we know. Again, your re-write is beautiful-- a joy to read.

    All the Best.

Thanks circusdoll and welcome back, we're both returnees to the Soulcast Family.
There I've posted it for you the Youtube version of Celine Dion and Adrea Bocelli.
Personally, I'd like to sing it the way I composed it. Thanks for your version and enjoy!

I don't know...I don't see the original chorus as being funeral-related at all, but rather as a wish for guidance through the storms of life - not to our final "safe" place, but just to the safe harbor we always have, and to the refuge of our own beds in relative safety at the end of every day.

I'm not sure how I'd re-write it, or if I would want to do so. It's an interesting question, and a song I love. :)

This song is one of my absolute favorites and it was on the tv the other night sung by Boccelli and Josh Grobin. Just beautiful...ok, the Mamie verse....

I pray You'll calm my heart and Lead me as I go.

Coz I get all mixed up, with things I still don't know

Lift me up with Grace, Your will within my heart

Shelter me from harm, keep me nice and warm

With your love I will be saved.

    amen. =)

Infernal: Thanks for your input. This a song about hope, a prayer for the hopeful living. But played under a different scenario such as during funeral rites, the song flexibly adapts to the occasion.

Ed,  a great song to ponder on and listen to!

Mamie: Beautiful adaptation of your lyrics, now if we could only practice together for a duet on national TV! :-)

I will be happy to lip sync to the celine dion version.
No worries, from far away no one would know...I am convincing in concert! =)
