In April 1992 a young man named Christopher Johnson McCandless decided to invent a new life for himself. McCandless gave his life saving of 25,000 dollars to charity abandoned his car and walked alone into the Alaskan Wilderness. Four months latter his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter.

McCandless was not a fool he graduated with honors from Emory University. He read Jack London, Wallace Stegner and Leo Tolstoy and was deeply moved by their stories of solitude and closeness to nature.

McCandless particularly liked White Fang by Jack London. McCandless read White Fang over and over. Although White Fang is a fictional story McCandless acted as if it was a true life story. Maybe McCandless was mentally ill I don’t know.

The story of Christopher McCandless is written about in a book called Into the wild by Jon Krakauer. I’ve read it and find the story of Christopher McCandless to be fascinating along with being a little sad.

Anyway thanks for reading

What's your point here Kemo? Sounds like McCandless was foolish no?

I do enjoy reading biographies no matter what the life of that person entails. The more different from mine the more interest i have.  I can't really say though mobil whether he was foolish or not without a few more details of his journey - did he have the right clothing or food supplies?  Had he any experience of living out with nature (even as a boy scout at least!).  Did he have any idea on where or what he was going to live in?  Me thinks I'll have a look for this book and find out those answers.

I, like you kemo, like other people to be aware of a good book I've read or film I've seen.  Don't you just hate it when you've watched the most amazing documentary and next day at work you're like "wow - did you see so-and-so?", and nobody did ha ha!

Personally I find the story of McCandless to be fasinating....no i don't think he was a fool...I think McCandless was a kind hearted person looking for the true meaning of life...It saddens me too know that he dies in his quest....

It is sad Kemo, but so many people come into these wild places without the slightest understanding of nature and true wilderness. These wild places do not suffer fools lightly.

Here's a good book for you. It's titled Death In the Yellowstone and cronicials the over three hundred people who have died there since the parks inception. It gives one an understanding about how city people, those never schooled in wilderness do such foolish things because of this total lack of understanding.
