Oh, does this bring back some memories?  How many of you actually "remember" Howdy Doody and watched him on the little b&w tv with those rabbit ears with aluminum foil?
I rmember like it was almost yesterday!!

I'm having trouble keeping it playing--the video sticks--starts and stops.  I keep clicking on it.  Sorry.  But you know, it's the strangest thing with me--I've heard of Howdy Doody of course, and am old enough that I should remember it--but I honestly don't recall growing up watching this!  Do you think it wasn't on in my neck of the woods?  Strange.....

He was really big here in the N.E. I know that.  And now that I watch that clown on there..."clara" she looks pretty scarey to me!  LOL

sorry, quietone: i'm afraid i've never seen the show!

ed ~ ha, now you show your age!! It was a bit before your time I think.  I was a child myself when this was on...so that would make you not even quite a "twinkle" in dads eye yet. LOL

Sorry it does not play for me.

It takes a long time to fully load. In order to see it straight through, you have to pause it until the whole progress bar is gray. Then hit play.

Now it worked and it was fun. I did not see that at the time but that was fun. lol

Lbno ~ you must remember this right?  thanks for the help for skald!

skald ~ did you have this show over there?

  • skald said on Feb 09, 2008....
Quiet. No not even on the Armed Forces Television Service but that was for the US army here.

Well, I'm old enough to remember Howdy, Buffalo Bob, and Clarabelle the Clown. I think Clarabelle was played by Bob Keeshan who later became Captain Kangaroo.

I remember the song. It was to the tune of Ta Ra Ra Boom Dee Ay. I remember the way Howdy looked, with those really wide cheeks and freckles. I don't remember any of the episodes. I was very much aware of the character but I apparently didn't watch it regularly or I would remember more about the show.

Lbno ~ I don't remember much myself..I must have been very young too...as we are about the same age.  right up there with Freddy Friehoffer..and the birthday shows he had.  Freddy we're ready, and we're waiting for you...bla bla bla!! LOL

Twyla~ oh, Captain Kangaroo..Mr. Greenjeans...Oh, how I miss them!!  And I wish so much that my grandchildren would have enjoyed them.  That was such a great kids show!!!

Do you remember Queen For A Day? Women would compete for who had the saddest sob story, and the one with the most miserable life would win a dishwasher or whatever. At least that was my impression of the show at the time.
  • quietone said on Feb 10, 2008....
Lbno ~ ha, yes I remember that dumb show!  Mostly I remember the crowning and the tears of joy..oh and lets not forget the "surprised" look no their faces!  :o

My parents used to watch You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx. Say the secret word and win a hundred dollars. It's a common word used around the house. Then he would shove his cigar in his mouth and flirt with all the girls and waggle his eyebrows up and down. Half the time he'd try to pressure the guy on the team to propose to the girl, especially if they just met.

Isn't it funny now how back then it was "common" to see people smoking on the air! I remember the name of that show, but I don't think I recall watching it.  How about the old "Truth or Consequences" Oh, and every weekend w/o fail I had to listen to Lawrence Welk and his band......

Quiet~ it would be nice if children's tv was as simple as it was in our day, but kids are too sophisticated these days...they'd be bored to tears.
  • quietone said on Feb 10, 2008....
Oh, I think both my grandkids would have like Captain Kangaroo.  But, yes, my oldes g.son is quite the sophistcated one...I think sadly that kids today lack a lot of the imagination that we had to have.

I'm thankful for all my SC friends. :-) So to pay tribute I will make the turkery, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. You can bring a side dish or dessert.

All are welcome.

What will you bring?
