Pálmi has my car today. We have a bit of a car problem. I was supposed to go to the music school but it was canceled. So I stayed at home. Very nice, indeed. There has been bad weather all over the country. Roads closed, flights are down and so on. As I have been saying many times we have not had such a bad winter for many years, As a matter of fact for some years we have hardly had winters. But King Winter decided to say here now. I had to walk to the shop because we need a dinner. Just looking out from the kitchen window I did not want to go out. But it is not far. The shop is behind the houses you see from the window. So I went.

That is how my garden looks today.

Me walking home from the shop. The snow actually went to my knee in one place. No one had shoveled and since I have a bad  back I won't do it. No to worry I am O.K

Infernal.  Sure was but still it has warmed up It is about 28,4 F or -2 C. Soon it will thaw again they say and then the hell will be loose so to say as it will flood, when the snow melts. I don't like that.
  • quietone said on Feb 07, 2008....
skald ~ I can post a picture that would look just like that...and it is also still snowing here too!! I think it is about the same temperture too.  Oh, I would not like the floods either.  I am thankful we do not get much of that.  I am glad you made it to the store and back.
  • skald said on Feb 07, 2008....
Quiet. Yes, seems to me that we are having twin weather lol  Thanks Quiet.

What a snow! I envy you:-(
  • MissMimi said on Feb 07, 2008....

Oh skald, this makes me cold just to look at it.  I'm glad you're back home where it's warm.

let's hope the flooding isn't too bad.

  • skald said on Feb 07, 2008....
Quna.  You can very well have mine. :-)
Mimi.  Maybe flooding is to much to call it but people are asked to check the drains and so on to morrow when they go to work and it it gets warm very suddenly the thaw will course the snow to melt very quickly. Thanks Mimi.
  • botoni said on Feb 07, 2008....
We had it just like that here a couple of days ago, Skald.  We ve had a warm snap and its slowly melting away.  A rapid thaw would have been the cause of ugly flooding here too.  Its warm enough to go out in a light jacket here today.  Winter!  I think we have it 9 months of the year.  The other three months are just bad sleighing.........hehehe.
  • polarheart said on Feb 07, 2008....
Gee, Skald, I had no idea that the snow has been so bad for you. . .goodness!!! I can understand you being tired of it now; enough is enough.  I must confess that coming from a warm country I am not all a "give me lots of snow" kind of person. . .It looks pretty but makes life hard! ((((((hugs)))))))
  • dailyachesandpains said on Feb 07, 2008....
OH SKALD!!!!  I totally take it back, it doesn't look pretty there right now.  Depressing.  Like out my window right now.  During summer, I'd be begging for just one day of snow.

I wondered how you were making out with all this snow. ..When I lived in Alaska, it would snow in October, and stay on the ground till spring.  One time it got so cold, our car popped a tire right off of it while we were driving.  praying that you stay warm and safe......:-)
  • pickersplock said on Feb 07, 2008....
Wow! We got mostly ice today.  I'm not sure which is worse!
  • skald said on Feb 07, 2008....
Polar.  It is so funny I feel that there has been so much snow and bad weather has been often this winter. Pálmi feels that there has been so much rain with storm and warm weather. We had a spell of  it but to me it seems like there has been mostly snow for so long. So  I wonder who is right. There was snow on Christmas and it feels like there has always been snow. lol
Cry.  That was awful. No it was not awfully cold. It gets much colder there and in Canada but we had accidents because it was slippery and all kinds of things. A snow avalanche in the west. Not a big one.
Pickers.  Ice is worse but the wind here, blowing snow is not nice either.
  • wombat said on Feb 07, 2008....
It's good that you have a shop nearby!  I did, until we moved and bought this place out in the "boonies." As far as I am concerned, if I can't throw a rock at the store, it is too far away in snow and ice!
  • skald said on Feb 07, 2008....
Wombie. Yes, i am lucky. I've lived here since 1882 and there has always been a shop there. Before I lived 5 years in a house with a shop next door to. it is great and even though I go to a low price store to buy things I take care of coming there to, to maintain the neighborhood store. It is important.
  • wombat said on Feb 07, 2008....
skald:  I know what you mean about the "small neighborhood stores."  They are always disappearing from neighborhoods in the U.S.  But being the way I am with driving in bad weather, I should be living in an apartment over a mall.
  • skald said on Feb 07, 2008....
Botoni. Sorry I did not see you there. We had also rain and very warm weahter and then we had floods. All the snow was away and came the next day after. Talking about weather yea lol. I thin we have winter 9 months also. Better than when there have been years when I don't know if it is autumn or spring. Just gray.
Wombat.  They disappear here too. Ours is not so very small by the way and has a lovely fish and meat counter.

Lol but do you think you would like it in an apartment over the mall?
  • wombat said on Feb 07, 2008....
skald:  Not especially, but I would survive better....and longer....ha.
  • dailyachesandpains said on Feb 07, 2008....
Wombie:  I've got a great idea...let's have our guys move in together and you and I can give them keys to all things that drive (INCLUDING LAWNMOWER) and we can go to Iceland and live above Skald!

I'll be there for both of you.  I'll cry with you when we're home sick or just have panic attacks together.  I'll cry with Skald over the back pain.  We'll all cry when it doesn't stop snowing. I'll be awake at all hours learning how to knit sweaters that Skald teaches me how to do in a day and we'll make a killing when we open up our own shop in our apartment that's above Skald.
(Skald, I did comment above, I'm sure you just missed it, lol)

  • secretlife said on Feb 07, 2008....
i don't blame you for not wanting to go out in that!
i like nothing better than to stay inside with a fire buring in the fireplace when the weather is cold and/or snowy!

so what'd you get for supper?
  • rupert7 said on Feb 07, 2008....
skald - that looks far too cold for me! I have not seen snow since 1962,when my family left England,it was snowing that day and there was even ice on the water. At the moment we are in the middle of summer here in Australia and it has been very hot, today is cooler and it rained most of yesterday. It feels cool today,it is only 76F or 26C. Bet that sounds hot to you though! lol
  • skald said on Feb 08, 2008....
    Wombie , lol
Daily.  lol Then we have to build  new floors on the 5th and 6th floor as my friends Sjöbba and Tommi live above me and Maria and Sergei also my friends above them The 4th floor has an apartment but only a small one so we will have to put you on the 5th and 6th floor that don't exist.

Yes but Daily we will mostly laugh together. Daily did I miss you, Sorry I´ll have a look. I also missed Botoni. What is the matter with me?   Oh yes Daily you can have my snow. lol
Secret. Oh you have a fireplace. Wonderful. I don't I am ashamed to say what I gave them for dinner. I was lazy and you know you look at the things in the store thinking you are always making the same things and that you only get the same things. I bought hamburgers and hamburger rolls . I fried the hamburgers, had some vegetables with them and fried eggs.
Rupe.  We once had 26 C in Reykjavík on a June day in 1976. I remember that day well and I have pictures from it. I was out in the garden with my little boy Beggi. Since then it has once been warmer. But the warmest we get in summer is about 20. I know it would be bad for you this weather. I have often been in Berlin when it is over 30 and I can very well bear it. Well you got to see snow once. I had a pen friend in Adelaide and she never saw snow. She wanted to but now she is dead. She was an old lady and very nice. Thanks Rube.

Hi, I've been following weather news and it is wierd all over --here in Israel, and throughout the Middle East:--there was snow in unusual places in very unusuable quantities-including in the desert in the south...
Before all the global warming hype started, 30 years ago or so-- I read a book written about ten years before that--saying that research with tree rings predicted a change in the weather--that the weather had patterns over hundreds of years--it said that the US would get warmer, and Europe would get colder because of a periodic shift in the Gulf Stream winds and currents...In ancient maps called portolanos (or something like that), England is drawn partially underwater, there are glaciers in Europe and Florida and California are mostly underwater also. A map found in Turkey a few hundred years ago showed antartica before it was under ice...Food for thought?
  • skald said on Feb 08, 2008....
Yes TRinov I heard that it snowed in Israel. Yes, I know about that theory and it could well be true. But still the same weather has always been unpredictable here.

They say that there is very bad weather also in China and a lot of people who wanted to celebrate the new year were stuck in railway stations. That sucks I think.

Well this what you said is something to think about thanks a lot.

goodness, skald! those are forbidding but beautiful pictures! so this winter is harsher than the norm, then?

i know so little about the climate in iceland!

  • skald said on Feb 08, 2008....
Ed it is warmer now and raining. We have had lightnings tonight. It only happens in winter here. It is 41 F and it is going to get cold again. The wind is very strong and once again we have rescue teams out. It is over 28 wind gusts per minute. it is a new measure here and I really don't l know what it means in knots or what ever.
