Expendable's tags:
You put in a posting and people start commenting. Then out of the blue, someone anonymously calls you an 'alt'. Now you've got questions, like:

what's an 'alt'?
An alt is an alternate account.

Who is 'anonymous'?
A troll. Anonymous comments were meant to allow people to say something while preserving their privacy. But sometimes trolls use it to hide who they are. Only they can give themselves away by how they post, their own unique style - some of us can recognise after a while who posted anonymously. Could we be wrong? Yeah. But trolls hate being exposed.

Why me?
To provoke you and the accused, hoping to get a fury of denials and angry replies.

Why?
Because they think it's fun. Or they're trying to get back at the accused who's already blocked them.

What can I do about this?
SoulCast's terms of use states very plainly we are all  responsible for how we interact with each other here. SoulCast reserves the right but has no obligation to step into a fight between members. And I don't blame them for that. But they did give us some tools.

1. block anonymous - which means nobody can post anonymously to your postings again.
2. delete the comment. It's got nothing to do with you.

What if it happens again?
Ignore it. Delete it.

Do you use alts?
No. When I get bored, I just write stories and post them. Or go read a book.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking of doing another write-up on trolls.
  • silverwhisper said on Feb 05, 2008....
i think it would be funny to keep a running list of suspected alts vs primary accounts...

  • Expendable said on Feb 05, 2008....

I've thought about it, but really that's still giving them too much attention. Better to ignore them. Delete off-topic remarks when they appear. If they're still a nuisance, block 'em.

  • the_infernal_optimist said on Feb 05, 2008....
Besides, hottips can't even keep straight which alt s/he's signed in under, as she demonstrated just a while ago on papajack's post. Why should anyone else be bothered if even the trolls themselves can't be moved to keep track of it all? ;-)

Yeah, I saw that. Later it'll turn out the puppet was posting from another puppet's pc. Oops. My bad. Keeping track of them all is too much work.

  • silverwhisper said on Feb 06, 2008....
i think a historical record might actually be useful, myself. :>

*shrugs* Everyone needs a hobby. Don't blame me if our puppet master just turns out more accounts trying to keep ahead of you.

  • silverwhisper said on Feb 06, 2008....
well, the nice thing about such a list is the fact that it isn't just me who might be adding to it, you see--i can easily see a bunch of folks supplementing the list on an as needed basis. :D

Decided to edit my post to make it read better. This is the original bit.

    Who is 'anonymous'?
A troll. Anonymous comments were meant to allow people to say something while preserving their privacy. But sometimes trolls use it to hide who they are. Only they give themselves away by how they post. No inside connections at SoulCast, no hacking someone's computer - we can just tell. Could we be wrong? Yeah. But trolls hate being exposed.

another edit. Here's the original bit.

What do you do about this?
    1. block anonymous - which means nobody can post anonymously to your postings again.

    Ex -

This is as close to a perfect description of the situation as I have seen.  Thank you.  I have been staying out of all of the mishegas (a lovely yiddish word meaning craziness) but wanted you to know that I appreciate this particular blog

I always wonder who could keep up with an alternate account?  The only one I have is enough to keep me hopping.  For those who can do 2 or more usernames - either need a pat on the back for the effort or seriously need a life outside of SC.  Maybe learn a hobby or find a friend.

So far no one has accused me of having an alt.  I'd take it as a compliment Expendable that they think you sharp enough to do it.  ;-)

Alternate or mainstream artistry are erroneous terms with little value beyond the media politicization of creative people for the sake of the latest market campaign.  Originality and lasting power are more important and essential to the survival of an artist.  This is why I have more respect for Alanis Morrissette than Christina Aguilera or Tori Amos.  She is creative, interesting, intelligent, likable and talented.  She is not perfect, intimidating, unapproachable, a goodie-goodie two shoes, a slut or troublemaker.  She is a good role model for women, espousing the true values of feminism and independence in art without pushing them in your face.

    Who else?

Gwen Stefani, Pink, Sade, Fiona Apple, Ashanti, Aaliyah (may God bless her, rest in peace), Siouxsie & the Banshees, Morrissey, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Joni Mitchell, Sandy Denny (Rest in Peace), Ani diFranco, Beth Orton, Diana Krall, Chantal Kreviazuk, Blue Rodeo, E.L.O., Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley, The Northern Pikes, The Mamas and the Papas, Burning Spear, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, X, L7, The Who, Sloan, Dream Warriors, Fergy, 54-40, Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly, Black Sabbath, U2, Rihanna, Kanye West, etc.

    Who sucks?

Courtney Love, Billy Corgan, Marilyn Manson, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Keshia Chante, Mary J. Blige, Madonna, R.E.M., Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Peaches, Ashlee Simpson, Jessica Simpson, Avril Lavigne, Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip, D.O.A., Sons of Freedom, Wyclef Jean, The Fugees, The Black-Eyed Peas, Lauryn Hill, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Jay-Z, Beyonce, many many more...

Alts are just problems. Coming up with fresh posts for two accounts? Creating a detailed life for my alt? And never mind the problem of what if everyone likes the alt better? Plus ed would be constantly messaging me asking if I was the new person. I've got enough chaos in my life already, thank you.
