I've been wanting to post something new for a while, but I haven't really had anything worth writing about.  In Quebec in February, you just sort of trudge from day to day!  So I am basically just copy-pasting this but I don't do that sort of thing often, so even though it's a bit lame and a cop-out, you can trust me that it's a good cop-out!

I got this in an email from my grandmother the other day and I thought it was neat. The fact that it's a forward means some of you have probably seen it before.  I took out the schmaltzy text and left just the key parts that stuck with me.  I think it's more poignant that way anyhow.  In the original email, it's attributed to Charles Schulz, but I haven't seen proof of that and anyway it's just as neat no matter who did or didn't say it first.

Here's a quiz for you.  You don't have to actually answer the questions; read them through and you'll get the idea.

1)Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
3)Name the last five Miss Americas.
4)Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.
5)Name the last six Best Actor/Actress Oscar winners.
6)Name the last ten World Series winners.

Now try these:

1)Name a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2)Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3)Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4)Name a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5)Name five people you enjoy spending time with.

very very good, I was watching oprah not long ago and she had someone on there about reminding ourselves to live in the moment, be aware and show gratitude for the lives we have.

Thanks, guys!  Both my grandmother and I have the same policy about forwarding emails - save it for the really good ones!  I really liked this one.  It's not a new concept or anything but it's a great way to illustrate it.  And it's something I really believe in.

I grew up being pushed to be a star, to change the world.  I'm a good person, and good at a lot of things, but I'm no star and no messiah.  I'm just one person among billions.  But I can change the world for one person.  I can be there for a friend.  I can listen, give a hug, hold a hand.  I can love somebody.

Somewhere along the way I realized, that's it.  That's the whole point.  The meaning of life, the purpose of existence, the reason we're here, however you want to think about it.  It's not about converting the world or making a name for yourself or anything else.  It's about each other.  The biggest mark any of us "ordinary people" will ever leave on the world is in the lives around us, and there's nothing more important we could ever do. (But see, it took me all this time to explain that and the little quiz does it so succinctly!)

My philosophy of life and my "religion" can be boiled down to two quotes:

"Beauty is truth; truth beauty.  This is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." (Keats)

"Be excellent to each other.  And party on, dudes!" (Bill and Ted)
