If You Could Live Forever, When Would You Finally Want To Die?

The 2,000-Year-Long Life > Beyond The Thousand Year Blues

  • Okay, I got a little carried away with the challenge, but guess what? I extrapolated our hypothetical life span all the way out to 4,000 years. How the heck do you fill 4,000 years of living? Let's continue on up to the 60th Century.

    4060

In your 2100th year you are among the 1,000 Oldest Living Sentient Beings of the Local Star Cluster and the known Milky Way Galaxy. Mankind is translating communication from The Cypheria Galaxy, a long-dead civilization trillions of parsecs distant. And a musical signal sent across the cosmos by NASA in 2008 marking their 50th anniversary is intercepted by a predatory space life form 2,052 light years away. It turns toward us.

    4160

In your 2200th year there are 277 worlds with life-supporting environments, variations of Earth, within 5,000 light years distance from Earth. You become a multi-bodied being living on seven different worlds in hundreds of simultaneously conscious bodies. Any one of them can mentally attune itself to the others and network with them if desired, or seem to be totally alone. You pursue each of these lives at once. In a century you tire of multiple existence and move to Earth’s undersea city Marianas as a single amphibious entity.

    4260

In your 2300th year you dwell in Earth’s oceans amphibiously as you explore aquatic existence. You create many hybrid human-aquatic forms (Homopus, Humanta Ray, Sapifish, Erectus Eel) and rule the South Pacific for decades. Intelligent life now teems in the oceans, mutations evolved by human engineers. Ocean dwellers challenge the political dominance of surface life over Earth. You become a figurehead and leader of Oceanic Equality.

    4360

In your 2400th year an Earth Civil War erupts between those who rule the land and those who inhabit the seas. Environmental fallout nearly poisons the world. Evacuation unprecedented in history leaves Earth declared unfit for life and earmarked for destruction. A popular outcry saves Earth from demolition to be preserved as an historic location. Thousands of improved Earth-like planets now exist within a 6,000 light year radius. You move to Barnard’s Star, a nearby red dwarf nursing 600 small planets. You are changing into a space dweller.

    4460

In your 2500th year you live in space as an adapted biological identity able to exist on the edge of a planet’s atmosphere. You and millions of others have invented this new life form that travels from world to world on solar waves. It is able to dip down into the uppermost regions of atmospheric sheathe and retain elements necessary for replenishment. A complex society forms, high above the world.

    4560

In your 2600th year the signals from The Cypheria begin to be understood, and mainly they are a warning against sending powerful signals randomly across the universe, such as the ancient NASA did in 2008. New technologies are backward-engineered from clues inside the Cypheria Communications. New devices become available that can be used without knowing why they work, based only on form and elements. The first century without warfare between any civilized beings in human descendant history finally passes. You join a social clan, common for this age.

    4660

In your 2700th year you migrate to another galaxy along with your social clan, seeking the Odinauts, who left Earth millions of years ago to establish life there. While you continue relating yourself to Earth years, the relative passing of time is altered by the great speed and distance involved. The journey there seems to take about 50 years. The Odinauts are used to welcoming human descendants from around the cosmos. You realize that intelligence has arisen on Earth and left for the universe hundreds – maybe thousands – of times.

    4760

In your 2800th year you have outlived Earth, a planet that no longer exists. You are unaware of your home planet’s demise as you advance to the high energized state of Odinacity. Interpersonal relations exist on transitential* biospheres attached to the enormous ring systems surrounding certain types of gas giant planets. You grow curious about other places in the universe and set out with several like spirits on an intergalactic tour. You have the misfortune of encountering members of The Predate, who you’ll learn destroyed Earth after following NASA’s signal to its home.

*this phrase represents a future thing that does not exist now and has no synonymous reference in our vocabulary.

    4860

In your 2900th year you are hunted across several galaxies by The Predate. It is learned that The Predate are shark-like hunters with planet-sized appetites who are able to ride the waves of photons. Several bloody battles and narrow escapes leave you thinking of death for the first time in thousands of years. Miraculously, you are saved by classical humans who time-traveled forward into a future they can barely comprehend. These people last interacted with reality in the year 2207. Some may be related directly to you. They are primitive and difficult to understand anymore.

    4960

In your 3000th year you celebrate by returning to your classical form, that of a 21st century human. While it cannot look exactly as you once did, the body is an approximation. Because of your longevity, you’re invited back to the Solar System for a grand celebration. You decline, fearful of lingering Predates. You steer clear of the Milky Way, mainly hanging out in Andromeda where things are cool for the most part. Human again, memories of the earliest days flood you. You can scarcely believe how long you have survived.

    5060

In your 3100th year you create an entire world of your own, a self-contained environment allowing only that which you design to exist within. You create 752 original characters and then allow the system to create one million variants of each, inhabiting 200 cities of your design. Once all is in place, you create an avatar for yourself, arrange for its birth inside the environment, and induce memory block so that you may experience a 75-year lifetime inside this world.

    5160

In your 3200th year your memory block is lifted and you return to your greater existence in the commonly known universe. Yet much has changed in your century of “sleep,” including the mysterious disappearance of your social clan – a confederation you’ve belonged to for 600 years. It is always dangerous reaching out to unknown social clans. Thousands of civilizations spread across thousands of light years have produced unknown and mutually dangerous gradational species of post-degenerate humanity. You are very much alone.

    5260

In your 3300th year you have contacted Jugrodh, a super advanced plant intelligence, a gigantic, sprawling, planet-sized life form existing in the Morphid Galaxy. Generating its own atmosphere, magnetic fields, electrical waves and soil core, Jugrodh also hosts a diversity of smaller symbiotic and parasitic forms which compare in size to degenerate humans. Jugrodh considers you to be such. Yet it offers protection of sorts, in the dark.

    5360

In your 3400th year you have lived in Jugrodh a century and encountered Treblestaffs, musical mites in constant concert, as well as Draksploks, muddy dark creatures dwelling in the thickest vines. Preferring this to the present dangers of even stranger intelligences on the loose in the local universe, you forge your own place in the evergreen giant’s domain. Jugrodh itself begins to reject your imbalancing of its ecoculture. The world itself sends Antibloxers, an army of horrible consumption craving carnivores, to finish you off. You escape just in time.

    5460

In your 3500th year you are tracked down by The Predate as you escape Jugrodh. They capture you by surprise. The Predate swarm toward Jugrodh and devour the proud world-being and all of its inhabitants. Yet even as they descend upon the mighty plant, you are able to resist their arrest, strong and prepared by your time within Jugrodh. You are oddly saddened to see the plant world destroyed. But you can’t take on the swarm. All you can do is escape, to fight another day.

    5560

In your 3600th year you are rescued in space by your social clan who reveals that you have been living a pre-programmed fake life inside your mind while your body was kept prisoner, all to stimulate hormone secretions while in stasis sleep mode. This has been going on for some 400 “years” now, ever since you thought you came out of your created world. You must now cope with the fact that your most recent memories and social norms are dreams that never happened outside of your mind. You will seek an end to the perpetrators of your delusion.

    5660

In your 3700th year it is revealed that the plot against you was perpetrated by your very own avatar from the world that you had once created, who felt that he was the “real” you and deserved a chance to live on. It seems that two centuries ago he posed as you and carried out your life – disastrously. He had destroyed your reputation and was about to be executed in the Emerton Nebula when you found him. He was a pathetic creature ill-equipped to cope with the real world. Which, since you designed him to be you, gives you much to think about.

    5760

In your 3800th year no matter what you do you move much more slowly than the latest people born A year to you is a tiny fraction of your overall life. No more than an hour used to be, once upon a time. To them, The New Ones, you are a sluggish, petrified alien laden with too many centuries of dust. Your social clan no longer seeks your counsel on matters of significance. A new Earth has been created, it is said, where the original once orbited, around the star Sol.

    5860

In your 3900th year you reach the star of your birth, Sol. The new Earth is not the same as the one that you remember. There, the year would be 79053. A full 74,000 years have passed in the Solar System since you left, even though to you and your social clan it’s been a mere1,300 years. The planet itself serves more an an amusement park and museum. The population of the Solar System, accounting for all sentient life of all species, has topped one trillion.

    5960

In your 4000th  year you join a new kind of social union allowing for mutual mind-bonding and thought sharing across vast distances, as artificial telepathy is introduced throughout the civilized universe. Internal warfare ensues across vast distances as Thought War One erupts. So widespread is the new technology  that there is no escaping its effects on all of society.

      I feel positively young!
Okay, then -- cycles of war and peace, technical advances, unexpected disasters -- sounds about right.
I'm starting to see traces of every sci-fi plot of the past century....
But a few original ideas, too....I like the living plant-planet...or whatever you would call that.

What happened to the nuclear holocaust which is inevitable? That's really gonna fuck up your continuity, ain't it?
    • HoleInTheCosmos said on Feb 05, 2008....
Some would say that the time for an inevitable nuclear holocaust has passed. However, the possibilities of nuclear terrorism - isolated nuclear disaster - are increasing.

It's not how long you make it - it's how you make it long.

Interseting concept, that everyone in society will live for centuries.  But what if it was just you and not everyone?  There are alot of horror stories based on such philosophies, especially vampire lore.   Such comic book heroes like Wolverine, though he hasn't lived for that long a lifespan, have lived for centuries.  In the bible, though I'm not an avid christian, I have read it, and many of them lived for many centuries.  What if you lived that long, but had a dark secret you had to hide?  Anyway, your sci-fi twist would make for an interesting series of books.  You should attempt to write each hundred years as a book.   I will be writing more stories soon, just have been really working long hours lately at work, and haven't been able to write more yet.  The next couple of weeks should slow down some, and might be able to write more.  Anyway, I will try to read some more of your posts later, I'm heading for bed now to go to work in the morning.  -Heavy Metal Thunder
