How's THAT for a simple question?

Either way, America as a culture will have to adjust to a radical new reality. A black man with a very unconventional family tree or a woman who used to bite her tongue as First Lady will likely become the next Big World Leader.

What will be the hardest for redneck America to take? Estrogen or Ethnicity? Menstruation or Reversed Plantation? A woman boss or a black overseer?

And it's not just Caucasian Americans who are having problems with this issue of bias.

What's the hardest for us to adjust to? A woman or a black?

Black. By far. We've all been lorded over by women at one time or another but lots of us have NEVER been dominated by Negroes.

Woman. The battle between the sexes cuts across all races. Men don't like women in authority. Is she going to have a "View" cabinet, mostly women? Will women Supreme Court justices become a majority? Will America feminize???? Except for a few redneck holdouts in the South, there aren't that many people intellectually opposed to a black man for President. But the woman thing?? Wait and see.....

PULEeeeeeezzze do not be ignorant. Celestial it is not just a couple of bumpkins picking what's left of their teeth in Alabama who would react negatively to a black president (or "Negro" as sameshitasUSUAL would say). Slavery started in New York, babe....Kansas had a bloody race warr....the immigrants in California today would probably agree - RACE trumps sexism. A black president will be disrespected and disowned by a great portion of the nation - shamefully.

I would opt for the most difficulty with an African American administration.

Gender wars are fought in bed and in the kitchen and bathrooms. Race wars are fought in the streets.

A female will cause a more quiet revolution, behind closed doors. There may well be upheaval in the streets if an African American wins.

It's a stupid question. We can adjust to anything. it IS 2008 and we ARE better than so many of you seem to think - it's a new generation.
  • Dreamknightx said on Feb 04, 2008....
Wow. That's pretty optimistic. But I would say both would be hard core attitude adjusters. Most likely, since we've already had a Clinton, Hillary would be less of a shocker than some other lady.

I think the black factor would be the hardest to deal with though, overall.

UNIQUE!!!!!! Are you actually so uninformed as to believe that YOUR generation is the one we've all been waiting for?
As I've grown old I've been increasingly stunned by the level of ignorance raised below me, that so many young people can still be outright stupid in their limited knowledge of history and politics.
Ignorance isn't generational, it's regional, it's local, it's house by house. It doesn't fucking matter what year it is (pardon my enthusiasm).

They're both pandering socialists, and both disasters.

Their personal packaging won't have much to do with their causing a virtual stalemate in Congress, for another term, if they are somehow elected in November (we might get them both, plus BJ Boy, for the first official 3 Way in the White House since, well, the last Clixon installment of Face The Intern).

McCain, warts and all, would be much more effective at getting things done with both major parties in tow.

i agree that feminism or the promotion of equality are not good reasons in and of themselves to vote for anyone. ........however, it's past time to get past the past........and either of them being elected would be a very very big step into the current era.

Who cares?  It will change nothing about government and society.  It is a figurehead position for a corrupt administration.  Women and Blacks will do no better or worse than anyone else.  What they stand for is more important.

As far as America not being the 'most advanced' country in the world: why no country is perfect, would Iran, Somalia and China be worthwhile alternatives?  If so, then why don't people immigrate there?
  • PassionTraveler said on Feb 05, 2008....
Ironically, of all of the candidates, those two, plus Fred Thompson were my early choices.

(I don't choose by party lines, I choose by what each individual candidate has to offer. Please no one hit me, we are free to choose in this country!)

My home state of Louisiana just elected a man of Indian decent as its governor, Bobby Jindal, and I had a chance to meet him when I lived there and worked in the journalism industry. Back then, that same man was the youngest governor-appointed adviser to straighten out Louisiana's health care system. He did an excellent job and I felt he had incredible integrity, unlike some of Louisiana's more colorful past candidates, like The Silver Zipper, aka Edwin Edwards. It has also had in recent history, a woman governor, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco.

All this considering it's rich history of slavery, oppression, and narrow mindedness. I'm proud of the progress of my state's people and ancestors have made (with the exception of Britney Spears, that girl just needs help).

I'm a Caucasian Cajun woman now living in Los Angeles with a tremendous cache of diverse friends (Egyptian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Ecuadorian, Indian, South African [black & white],  Italian, Nigerian, Costa Rican, and more) that I never experienced where I grew up in Louisiana. I have taught myself Spanish, and am working on Arabic. I have studied some French, and German, but wouldn't call myself fluent. I have

I guess I am blessed to say I've experienced a cultural acceptance and understanding that I know many have not.

Fred dropped out; so therefore I have no issues with either choice.

I think the biggest adjustment would be a woman because I noticed some weren't too happy when Nancy Pelosi got her promotion.
  • mOOn_platOOn said on Feb 05, 2008....
What if Hillary chose a female Vice Presidential candidate? Or if Obama choose a black running mate?

Destiny - America has a constant undercurrent of racism, and part of it is simply the competitive nature of the economy mixed with history. Great Britain denounced slavery and the practice thereof in 1822 (when they finally stopped selling them) and did it without a war. So much of the American economy depended on slave labor that it was another 30 years and a bloody Civil War before the official end of slavery. The master-slave relationships continued on for most yet another 40 - 60 years (housekeepers, nannies, field workers, day labor, ghettoes) and it was only in 1952 when the first year in American history went by without a recorded lynching. Only the Civil Rights Act in 1964 finally outlawed discrimination, and today there are still a lot of white people who have never had to face their inner racist because there are still large segments of America that are all-white. They are still ignoring things because Obama is not yet official. But if it becomes evident that his election is possible, the fun will begin. Same with Hillary. Remember, there are women still alive who didn't even have the right to vote when they were younger.

Even those of us who intellectually have nothing against a woman or minority President may simply not like these particular choices. I have a hard time liking Hillary for some reason, and I don't have a problem with Pelosi (in fact I had a huge crush on Rep. Connie Morrella in the early 90s - I kept running into her in D.C. and she was darned cute). But Hillary - I get the feeling she's secretly mean or something.

And Obama is an unripened fruit who's been plucked from the tree too soon. Voting for him is like voting for a list of virtues that are untested in crisis or under pressure - kind of like student government level credentials. I can't imagine Obama getting much attention if he were Caucasian.

If you look at this globally, there are fewer women in position of national leaders than there are non-whites.  So, on that basis it would be a bigger adjustment to having a female president.  However, there have recently been a few well accepted women such as in England's case. (Thatcher)

On a national level I think a female probably prove more awkward.  We are used to having a first lady, so would we now have a first man?  Most other functions are more generic and would prove less awkward.

  • TheNakedProfessor said on Feb 05, 2008....
Every President has had people who hate the idea of him being President. Nixon haters, Clinton haters, Bush haters, Reagan haters, we all know them.

Haters against women and African American politicians have been routed and dealt with for decades now. I am starting to think that maybe the adjustment has already taken place, hence the tightness of the race. However, it should be pointed out that the overall Democrat field of candidates is and was fairly weak. There was no seasoned, popular white guy offered up. Dowd is not popular and Biden is never a serious contender. John Edwards was too young and unseasoned, however if he had been black he'd probably be whipping Obama's ass at least.

  • vacantmind said on Feb 05, 2008....

I think there is alot more factors to think about besides woman vs. black man. Hillary really isn't a woman that middle class women believe in. She  has her following in some of the weirdest sectors. There is alot of speculation about her following and where her campaign money is coming from. Considering that alot of Iraqi men won't do business with women how is she going to be a politcal figure to end this war.  Obama is black but I don't think that is what American sees as much as his religious beliefs.

I don't think we will have to worry about adjusting to either of them. They will be assassination targets from day one. Sad to say but we have too many extremists groups that would be willing to take either or both of them out. These groups may make it impossible for them to do the job effectively. One term is all that I can see them holding and that may be a stretch. We have extremists in the government as well and they could potentially stop them from moving forward.

Exactly. I'm not denying that racism and sexism exist -- I've seen it and I know that it exists. However, the overt expressions of both isms have been pushed away from the mainstream and further out into the fringe, fortunately.

I get pretty offended when I read the letters to the editor in the newspaper stating how someone is racist for not voting for Obama or is sexist for not voting for Clinton. There are other reasons to vote for or not vote for them.

It's not that their gender and their race are totally irrelevant components of who they are, because ignoring the obvious is true ignorance. However it is, or should not be, the defining criteria on which people should make their decision.

  • husbandhater said on Feb 08, 2008....

1st of all I am not a Negro and neither is Obama something unusual. That term hasn't been used in 20yrs. I am Black and from what I understand there was alot of Fucking going on in the old days and no one is quite sure of who is in their family tree. I've got white jews, native Americans and it is only in this particular country where race is such an issue and you are not considered anything else once a Black relative is found in your family tree.

Last time I checked people are people. Race is something people use like financial status. NO ONE IS BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE! If you were dying and you needed my blood or heart to live and I was a compatable donor I can't see you refusing it b/c I'm black. Maybe this is why God has allowed us to reach the technological advances that we have b/c he had no other way to communicate to some of us idiots down here that we are one in the same and the beauty is that we are like icecream we come in all different flavors.

Obama is 1/2 White which makes him of "2" races weither this country wants to acknowledge it or not. Raised by his White mother and then his White Grandparents when she passed. Which would make him more WHITE than Black if you ask me and many. Did you not catch the B.E.T campaign Obama:What's in it for US. He knows little of the black experience as his father died when he was young and he had little exposure to him.  The most he could share is racism.

There is NOTHING unconventional about his family tree. The ONLY thing unconventional is the fact that his mother love, excepted and raised him. Especially in that particular racist time period. Why does "a part" of this mans' ethnicity that he's probably NOT partcially intouch with threaten people? He probably could run this country better than Reagan,Bush, and maybe even Clinton(the unoffical offical 1st black president). I thought that in the 21st century we had gotten beyond this and learned to judge a man according to his merits? And as far as Mrs.C. The part that I might have a problem with is the part about her being a Woman dealing with a particular part of the world that has Little respect for Woman. Will she need a Burka just to address them?
