As preacherman,  I didn't gain many, and I really hope I attract more as papjack. So, do you have any suggestions?

honestly, i think your best bet is to be yourself and not worry about subscribers. ask anybody near the top of the most popular list and i'm fairly certain they'll tell you the same, every last one of 'em.

there's really only one thing that goes into developing a readership here: longevity. jadelondon hasn't posted a new blog entry in almost half a year or something until she returned a week or so ago. she's still in the top ten, IIRC. :>

so to wit: just be you, and keep on being you, i say. :>

I really like the new name.  I'm not much of a church-goer, and to be honest, it sounded like a post by "preacherman" would be....well....Preachy!
  • rainydays2 said on Feb 04, 2008....
I just subscribed. That will help you get started.  I will read your blogs too.

I agree with Actor that not having a religious-sounding name might attract more people, and I also think that the more posts you comment on, the more people will see you and get curious (I did, on a post of ed's, so I came here to see who you were :)).

Commenting on other blogs is a good place to start.

Second, stop posting completely on "preacherman" and commenting using that username as well. Make this the username you do all your blogging on. Don't go back and forth between the two.

Consider putting all the posts on "preacherman" in draft mode and then repost them here under this username.

I'm always surprised when I see a new name on my list. It's usually people I commented on when I read their post.

For me, comments are key.  The more comments you leave on other blogs, the more people know your name.  In marketing, they call it "exposure."  For example, SilverWhisper has a lot of subscribers who don't even know you're here.  But if you were to leave a comment on one of his posts, then all of those people have a chance to see your name and be interested by what you said.  And the more they see your name everywhere, the more they'll think, "Hm, this guy seems like a really active member and I like the way he writes...he comments on my own blog all the time, maybe I should return the favor...let me go check out his blog!"

Pick a few blogs that you like a lot, and be sure to comment on every post that you feel you have something to comment about!  The thing is that it's a snowball effect, starting small and picking up speed over time.  So for a while you might be writing posts that nobody reads (though you have plenty of people reading this one! and you and your family are consistently on the "featured" page, which is a good start!) but you've just got to forge ahead and eventually people will come to check you out!

After that, the key is to be sure that when visitors come, there are fresh posts to greet them!  There's nothing more disappointing than finally going to check out an interesting writer and finding out they only have 5 or 6 entries and/or their last post was months ago (*cough*guiltyofthat*cough*).

Everybody---I am going to answer you individually, but right this minute I have a very important question to throw out to all of you!

Any suggestions on how to get Crybabylu off of the computer more so I can blog sometimes?......Ha..ha...ha..!

yehh I agree woom I have three... (nak nak nak)

I agree with some above, preacherman kind of felt a little too religious to me so I didn't really visit that much, papjaks a cool name and as pretty much everyone else here says...

comment, make yourself known or do what I do... WINGE about it... I got more comments than any post I've ever done by whining...

Post something regularly - it doesn't have to be every day but you should do at least two-three posts each week. Note what gets people's interest and what doesn't. Respond to your commenters. Kill comments that attempt to side-track the discussion - or make it a new thread.

Read what other people have posted. Comment. If you disagree with something, make sure you say why you disagree. Be prepared to argue. Having something to support your position helps. Wikipedia can be your friend. So can a good search engine.

Be yourself. you'd be surprised how well that works. Silver's always himself and people really respond to that.

Mind the trolls. Don't be afraid of reporting abuse and harassment to SoulCast Help. Or blocking trolls.

guys, "woomraider" is just an alt for "hottips". FYI.

papajack: actually, super z's suggestion of blowing away everything in the preacherman account and using only this one makes a lot of sense. i'd forgotten but in one of my online haunts, i actually went through a username change myself. and that's precisely what i did: was active only under the new ID, participated in the same discussions, etc.

JR: there's nothing to thank me for--honesty and openness are the coin on which SC operates best, i've always found. :>

and i'm pretty sure i'm gonna like you just being you, JR. :>

Papajack, you should delete off-topic comments. Everyone here have their own blogs they can rant from.

Thank you carefullu. I am still waiting to inform some of my previous subscribers. Forgot who I told and who I didn't.
  • Zayda said on Feb 08, 2008....
    Papajack,
Just write one last post on "Preacherman" saying that you have switched usernames and stating what the new username is. This way those subscribed to you on "Preacherman" can find the new username. Then draft all the posts on "Preacherman" except the one announcing the switch in usernames.
