I'm just curious. Do you have a specific side of the bed you have to sleep on? And if so, is your preference compatible with your spouse/bed partner?

I have this friend who recently met a pretty cool girl. He was thinking there might be some potential there for a long term relationship.

But they spent the night together for the first time and he realized they both needed to sleep on the right side of the bed. Neither one of them was willing to budge on that.

She said she felt weird on the left side because she's always been on the right. Even when she sleeps alone, that's her spot. And my friend, equally as stubborn and set in his ways, said the same thing.

This is a dilemma unless they'd like to sleep stacked on top of each other. Someone has to give in right?

He ended up agreeing to sleep on the left side just because he wanted to be nice. But he said he didn't sleep a wink and now he thinks the potential for a relationship is doomed.

Could this actually be a dealbreaker? Is sleeping compatibility a reason to end a relationship while it's still blossoming?

I've always slept on the left side of the bed myself. It just happened that way. But I've only shared my bed with one person so I've never encountered a clash in this department. I'm pretty sure I could sleep in a heap on the floor if need be. I'm not that picky.

Are you picky? What side of the bed do you sleep on?

I prefer to sleep on the side of the bed facing/closest to the door. In most cases, that's been the right side (as you're on the bed, left if you're standing at the foot of the bed looking at it). DH sleeps on the left, so it hasn't really been an issue for us. Like you, I've only shared my bed with one person like that. It'd never really be a problem though. I can sleep anywhere (even standing upright, leaning against a wall).

Sleeping Boxy.....i was counting all the beds i have slept in.........uhmm...yes, i always ended up sleeping on the left side of my man of the moment (and naturally for all the years of my marriage at the left side of my ex) ...preferebly facing the door....

But i am not that picky....i can soundly sleep in both sides...how good i sleep it depends by what happens before falling asleep.....*wink*

  • Eilan said on Feb 03, 2008....
The left side, most definitely.  I prefer to sleep on my left side, and I can't stand to have a bed partner breathing toward me, and that might happen if I were sleeping on my left side on the right side of the bed.  Fortunately, my husband isn't picky about where he sleeps.

hmmm if I am lying in bed I have to sleep on the right hand side, ergo my hb HAS to sleep on the left hand side, seriously it doesn't bother me at all but I have to sleep right side because he CANT sleep there... weird but I'm use to it..
  • minniemouse said on Feb 03, 2008....

Hmmm....usually always the left.  When the S.O. is out of town I sleep smack in the middle.  I could probably sleep in the right without a problem though.

I never really thought about it being a problem.  That's pretty funny your friend having a problem with this.  I guess if they like each other enough, they will find a compromise.

This is funny because Kyle is very particular about which side of the bed he sleeps on too! He has to be on the right side. I thought he was just being goofy when he said he'd never be able to fall asleep if he was on the wrong side. But he really can't!

I guess it's ok because I don't really care. I usually always slept on the right since it was closest to my nightstand w/ the alarm clock on it. But I'm flexible! I can sleep anywhere really except the floor. That's not very comfortable. But when I was single I slept on the couch alot cuz I'd fall asleep watching TV!

Well Natalie already gave my answer, but yes, I'm picky! I've always slept on the right side of the bed. I've tried laying down on the left side, but it's like being in a foreign territory. Everything feels wrong. I'm a little weird maybe, but at least I know I'm not the only one! I'm not sure if it would be a relationship deal breaker, but it would be an issue for someone as ridiculous as me....

But right now I'm guessing you guys don't have this problem right??? I dare say the beds getting a little honeymoon work out?? (lol sorry couldn't help it... honeymoon heads)
  • evil_twin said on Feb 03, 2008....
Well Lucy, I can do other things on whatever side of the bed we land on ;-) Sleep is another thing altogether! Good thing Nat doesn't care!

Ms. Infernal.....I like to be on the side closest to the door too. My wife prefers to be next to the window. It works out well because of the layout of our bedroom. I could sleep anywhere too though. Although maybe not standing up. I'd fall over.

Gingery.....It doesn't matter much to me either. And if I'd just had a good time, I'd sleep at the foot of the bed like a cat if I had to ;-)

Eilan.....you don't like someone breathing towards you? That's funny. I understand though. Sleeping breath isn't that fresh. I don't like it when my wife breathes too close my ear. It drives me crazy.

Lucy.....sounds as if it all worked out okay. At least you were willing to sleep wherever since your husband has a definite preference.

Minnie.....I've never slept in the middle of the bed before. I actually tried this once when my wife was out of town, but it felt strange. I wasn't used to having that much space to work with! I suppose my friend will either get over this obsessive sleeping habit or he's just not that into her is he?

Mrs. Twin....It's good that you're flexible about which side you sleep on. I should have known Kyle would be picky. He was always weird about his sleeping rituals. The sheets have to be a certain way and his feet can never touch fuzzy blanket material or he has to remake the bed. Did you know that? Maybe I just told you something he hasn't shared yet ;-)

Kyle.....I knew this would be an issue with you! But I'm sure if Nat wanted the right side too, you'd figure something out. Lucky for you she's willing to sleep anywhere as long it's next to you. Aww! ;-)

As for these last comments between Lucy, Natty, and Kyle.....I don't think anyone is picky about where the non-sleep extracurricular activities happen. And if they are? THAT would be a relationship dealbreaker!

  • beyondtheveil said on Feb 03, 2008....
mrbox- I sleep on the left side because I was told to.
  • Mr_Box said on Feb 03, 2008....
Beyond....I'm guessing this means the wife has a definite preference? At least you were willing to do as you were told!
  • Fallyn said on Feb 04, 2008....
that would not be a deal breaker.
i don't think i have a set side, though if the bed has one side up against the wall
i have to be on the side that isn't against the wall....cause i'm usually the first one up.

now with the kids...... oh and the cat.......i basically get whatever little wedge of the bed is left ....be that right, left, top, bottom, sideways, backwards....a little square with no covers

i haven't been  sleeping terribly well. *laughing*

  • destinydiva said on Feb 04, 2008....
wow this guy is seriously considering ending the relationship for that reason alone? ....actually, if they are at such an early stage in their relationship and cant compromise over which side of the bed to sleep on thats probley not a good sign anyway? :-)
for me.... one of the few perks of being alone...I get a whole kingsize bed to myself :-) xx
  • quietone said on Feb 04, 2008....
LOL beyond...what a good boy!! I sleep diagonal...I get the whole bed!! But, I also prefer to sleep closest to the door...it doesn't matter what side.
  • silverwhisper said on Feb 04, 2008....
i have to be on the right side (as you're on it), b/c otherwise, i'm disoriented as hell in the morning. :>

i once ran a poll about whether bed "sides" are a function of who does the driving. the responses there largely coincided. :>

I have always slept on the left side oft the bed and strangely enough, every woman who has shared a bed with me (not actually that many) have always wanted the right side!
  • evil_twin said on Feb 04, 2008....
Jack, I could write an entire blog about my weird sleeping rituals. I know I'm crazy, but I can't help it! :-P

Doesn't matter to me which side I'm on.  I can usually adjust to a new side after a couple of nights.

Is it just me, or are men more picky about such things?  (Don't get me wrong, women are picky about other stuff.)

  • queenparanoia said on Feb 04, 2008....
i'm not picky. i sleep on either sides... and besides who cares on what side of the bed you sleep. as long as you sleep right??? =)
  • Me-Myself&I said on Feb 04, 2008....
i sleep on the side....closest to the door. no matter where i'm at or what bed i'm in. i'm up and down most nights.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Feb 04, 2008....
I can sleep on either side though I prefer the left side.  If I'm alone I like sleeping right in the dead center and have been told that moving me from that spot is a lot like hand to hand combat if you try to do it after I've fallen asleep.
  • seer said on Feb 04, 2008....
I tend to sleep on my right shoulder (cause my left one is plastic), and I don't like inhaling girl hair, which means I sleep on the left.

When I sleep on my own I tend to thrash about a bit.
  • beltrix said on Feb 12, 2008....

i tend to sleep bang in the middle, cus im a strange one. but curling up on the same side is always the best

or is that a myth?...
Just a word from me, I need to ask you a couple of questions....
Please? Oh come on, it'll be fun. :-)...
and the abuse question came up.

i answered all her questions.... i haven't been reluctant to talk about it since the relationship ended... it's been very healing.... i'm past the point of needing to talk about it though and generally it only...
