I agree with you. In Texas where i live the situation is even worts. Here the Latino population is going to be the majority in few years. Sometimes when i go to Wal Mart i have the dizzy feeling i had crossed the border with Mexico without knowing it...cashiers speak in Spanish to each other in front of English speaking people...
Everywhere, i mean everywhere you see signs in English and Spanish. Yet...in my city there is a large community of Indians....they have their neighborhoods, stores, movie theaters....overall they are way richer than the Latino community .....many of them are doctors, pediatrician, lawyers...and yet....did i see one single sign in their language? Nope.
I am Italian. I have learned English in college and when i moved here i knew i had to work hard to have a better comprehension of English in writing, reading and speaking. I wasn't expecting anybody putting up signs in Italian for me. I think is my first responsability to make people able to understand me.
I think that a lot of people here is simply lazy...the City makes it so easy for them to have everything explained in Spanish...why should they take an effort in learning English? And yet...now if you want to find a job you have to bilingual...if you know Spanish you are picked compared to somebody else who doesnt know Spanish...i dont think its right....just because Spanish speaking people don't know or dont care speaking English?
Even in tv....the local providers had doubled the channels of only Spanish language in the last 3 years...if i want to see a movie in Italian i have to hope Sundance have mercy of me once in a blue moon but if you flip thru the channels you (again) migth have the weird sensation to be in Mexico City not Dallas.
minniemouse, ALIENated....thanks for your comments. Like most things these days, I guess it's all about money and power.
gingersoul, your comments are very insightful and you've learned English well. Every job I ever got, was based on a short conversation and a handshake. No one ever asked me if I spoke Spanish or any other foreign language. No doubt, those days are gone. That's why, sometimes I refer to the "Giving Away of America". Although far from perfect, I love this country...but not the direction we're headed in. I want the restoration of America, not change aimed at advancing select groups.
