short version: british scientists have discovered a method of creating sperm from female bone marrow, although the resulting children may be at risk for birth defects. also, brazilian researchers may have a way to create eggs from embryonic stem cells. long version here.

commentary: there’s a massive amount of wigging out resulting from these 2 discoveries, mainly the usual overwrought hysterics you might expect from social conservatives about science somehow “undermining” the institution of marriage.

edit: i just realized that jadelondon posted this as one of several stories in a recent blog entry--sorry, jade!

Ed- I wonder if this is similar to the holographic nature of pictures where a tiny portion includes the make up of the entire picture? Perhaps one cell of our body contains the information for the entire body and the possibilities may become virtually endless.

People need to take a deep breath and prepare themselves for what science is going provide in the next few years, especially a generation. There are huge advances and ethical questions just on the horizon.

i really don't think it's that surprising to find the basic building blocks of male chemestry somewhere in the female chemical structure. after all, we all start out as part of a female, most of what makes us up comes from a female, so most of what makes us up should be in a female, right?

beyond: while i agree that there are bound to be ethical considerations in coming scientific research, i'm fuzzy on whether that's the case here.

trav: you know, an excellent point i hadn't considered. :>
