If Obama Were White, Would Anyone Even Be Paying Attention?
I’m not the most political animal any longer. I don’t get too caught up in the battles or follow every nuance of the campaign – it’s just not that interesting.
So all I have at this point are general impressions. That’s all. And my impression of Obama is light.
This has been going on for quite awhile now and I can’t think of anything that Obama stands for.
It occurred to me yesterday that if Obama were white, he’d fade into the background. This is no great civil rights leader who sacrificed for a cause. This is no hero. This is an “articulate” biracial guy, a lawyer with a likable and rather – humble? – demeanor.
He punches the air with his half-clenched fist, oddly looking like a rich man’s Bob Dole, and gives speech with cadence. It’s all a bunch of non-specific feel-good old-fashioned (aka Kennedy Style) rhetoric. Again, these are just impressions.
The Kennedy Clan – or at least the Big Shots who are left, Teddy and Caroline – backing Obama? This cannot be a surprise to anyone with a sense of Kennedy history. Without a Civil Rights legacy, the short administration of Jack Kennedy will be remembered for two things: the Bay of Pigs and Being Assassinated. Oh, and for being a hot couple that everyone wanted to bone.
Now, the remaining bearers of the 60s torch have a chance to push history into “The First Black President,” a possibility which polls have confirmed as much as polls can confirm anything.
Some minor Kennedy’s have gone astray, throwing support to someone else but of course I can’t even remember whom. Impressions.
Wow. See how easily I was distracted from Obama? But now, the Kennedy Curse is his!
What will happen next?
