The aftermath of 9/11 is still unraveling. If you are a traveler crossing US borders, you'd know exactly what I mean. US citizens must now carry passports!
For now anyway, a driver's license and/or birth certificate is adequate but both would be required very soon before anyone can cross the border.
Of course, all aliens must have their passports, which all Americans must have by June 2009, if they hope to travel abroad or get back home.
Can you imagine that? Before Bush came, Americans could go practically anywhere worldwide without a passport and even a visa - if my memory serves me right.
Wow, how times are changing.

you know, we take for granted that kind of freedom. i suspect that most other nations are a bit more stringent than we've historically been about border crossings, to be honest.

Yes, I agree with you. As long as one is not an illegal alien, border crossings used to be quite easy.
