Here it is already Wednesday and I never had a chance to write about how the dinner went with my parents last Saturday. I kept meaning to sit down and write it, but I never did. Better late than never, I guess!

The dinner actually ended up being a surprise wedding reception. My parents had invited Natalie's family, Jack and his family, and some of our good friends. It was a party! Needless to say we were really surprised. Everyone parked their cars around the block so we didn't even have an inkling that anything was going on.

It was a very nice, simple party. Which matched the tone of our crazy impromptu wedding that no one was invited to. Apparently Natalie's mom wasn't satisfied with my mom's plans and put up a bit of a stink. But my mom is really bossy and no nonsense, and I guess she got her to chill out. Marie was calling me 'that crazy hippie boy' who had some new age guru perform our wedding.

It was was actually pretty comical to me. I'm not a hippie, for a starters. But it was like a weird deja vu moment, because that's exactly what my mom's parents used to call my dad! I guess we not only look similar, but are destined to marry into the same type of family too. Kinda funny actually.

I'm guessing that part of the little talk my mom had with Marie pointed out how Natalie and I were very well matched. So if I was a crazy hippie boy, then she must be a crazy hippie girl. And didn't she want her daughter to be happy and with someone who thought she was awesome just the way she was? My mom is really good at getting people to calm down and think more rationally.

So by the time we got there, she was all smiles and happiness. She still thinks we ruined her dreams, but at least she understands that we were living our own instead. Natalie's dad was actually really cool. He was just excited for us. He wanted to see his daughter dressed up like a princess, but he was really sweet to her and said she looked like a princess everyday. So he still got his wish.

All of our friends were supportive and we had a really fun time. It was just dinner and cake and presents. I knew my mom lied about the no presents clause! Mostly we got money, and you really can't complain about that. We were scolded for not registering anywhere, but we have all the stuff we need anyway.

We didn't need a breadmaker or a cappuccino machine. And fine china? Please. We eat on plastic Disney plates most of the time. When would we have an occasion for fancy china? So we were quite satisfied with what we got. We weren't expecting anything, so this was another nice surprise.

All in all, this is exactly how I envisioned everything. Casual and fun, with nothing but the people who really matter in attendance. They got their party, and we got the wedding we wanted. So everyone was happy. And no one seemed to miss having a DJ or expensive flowers. And that's about the only thing a real wedding reception would have provided. This was better.

Now we just need to decide where we want to go on our belated honeymoon. It probably won't be until late spring or summer, but we want to plan it now so we can have everything in place and have something to look forward to!

How sweet of your mom to coordinate a little family get together!  It sounds like everyone has settled down and is having fun with the fact that you two are now an "official" couple.

It sounds like a great time. I really like how everything worked out in the end. Are you two planning an elaborate honeymoon... or are you going to go camping in the local park or something!? :-) Just kidding! :-)

I'm glad to see things are going well. Congratulations again!

uniquely--It was really awesome of my mom to do this for us. And everyone has already gotten used to it now so it's definitely calmed down!

    infernal--I love good surprises too!

minnie--It was a perfect beginning! Thanks!

    Grace--It was nice!

Sunshine--We are actually thinking of going someplace warm...and fun...Disneyworld! You knew it had to be something off the wall, but at least it's better than camping! We'll actually stay in a real hotel too :-P

isn't it great when you get to live your dream, and everyone around you gets on board too? we don't get that very often in our lives, and i think a marriage is about the pinacle of that situation :-)
  • wombat said on Jan 30, 2008....
Just stopping in to be nosy...ha.  No, I am glad the get-together worked out well for you all, and I loved the comment to the "princess bride."  That was sweet of him.  Happy honeymoon planning!

That's wonderful!  I wish I could turn the clock back six years and do it that way.  Oh, FYI...my Lenox "fine" china still have the price stickers on! Even worse...I have them in a china cabinet and you can see the sticker in one of the tea cups when you walk past!  I keep it that way to remind myself that we will never need to take it off, lol!

I was wondering if you were ever going to write about this. It was a really good idea that Mom had. I think if you'd planned a fancy big reception it wouldn't have been near as fun.

Are you sure you don't need a breadmaker? Because Melanie and I have one. It's been used once since our wedding almost 11 years ago. Then we decided that it was easier to buy Wonder Bread at the store.

  • nursecutie said on Jan 30, 2008....

My mom is just something else with that hippie stuff.......LOL But I'm glad you found it funny instead of annoying! She really did lighten up though and I know she's happy. She wasn't ever upset for me or that we got married. She was only upset that SHE didn't get a fancy day to be mother of the bride!

She will probably always bring it up for the rest of her life but we can just roll our eyes and ignore it. My daddy was happy though :) He knows how to make everything better! But of course your parents are the best. This party was their idea! It was so fun :)

Oh and I think I like Disneyworld for a honeymoon too......it's not exotic like Paris but at least we speak the language!

You guys HAVE to go to Disney World!  Have you ever been?  I know you guys have been to Disneyland, but Disney World is...well...a whole other world!!  LOL....I love it!  I would go there every year if I could!!!  The Key West Resort is the best...quiet and "out of the way", but still have access to everything...Just my 2 cents!  :-)  Minnie

  • nursecutie said on Jan 30, 2008....

Minnie we've both been to Disneyworld but not for a long time. And I hear it's changed sooooo much. I'm pretty sure that's where we're going to go. There is so much to see there and do. They have all those amusement parks and zoos and resorts........you need weeks just see it all! I agree that it's nothing like DisneyLAND. It's much much better!

trav--It is a good feeling when everyone is being supportive and happy for you!

wombat--Thanks! I'm glad you dropped by. I'm looking forward to the honeymoon plans too!

daily--That's so funny about the price sticker! See, that's probably what would end up happening with ours too if we had any. No one I know ever uses that stuff, but yet it's a standard wedding gift....

Mr. Box--If we ever get a craving for freshly made bread, we'd borrow your breadmaker. But usually if we want that, we'll buy those Pillsbury dough things in a can....

Cutie--I did think your mom was amusing. There was nothing else I could really do but laugh about it all. And I like Disneyworld too. Much better than Paris!

minnie--Nat already answered for me, but yeah, I've been Disneyworld before. It was when I was teenager though. It's definitely time to go again!

It sounds like it was fun - I agree with you ET - I wouldn't register anywhere either - I have everything I need and want as it is - do I really need another toaster.  And your right - as for china - I have great china I inherited that I love, and never use,  so why register for that?

I always joked that if I ever got married I wanted the announcements to read: "The Bride and Groom are registered at Bank of America."

    Is that too tacky??? :)

  • FutureGoddess said on Jan 31, 2008....
Oh - and a quick idea - if you do decide to go to Disney World (the happiest place on Earth) - then you may want to check into staying at Cinderella's Castle.  Apparently it's a wonderful experience.  And the best time to go is before school lets out for the kids - the parks are relatively emptier.
  • evil_twin said on Jan 31, 2008....
Lucy--Thanks! I hope everything goes well too :-)

twyla--My mom did have a great idea! It was a lot of fun.

crybaby--It was really sweet of her :-)

moyz--I think it worked out well for everyone in the end too!

Rc--It all worked out great! And yes, apparently I'm a crazy hippie boy...but I'm not sure why she thinks that!

FutureGoddess--No one I know really uses their fine china. I like your BofA wedding registry idea! :-P I didn't know you could stay inside the actual Cinderella castle. The one at the park? It's a hotel now? You do have a good point about when to go. Maybe we'll try for May because most schools don't let out until June.

  • Sunshine_Mariah said on Jan 31, 2008....
I didn't realize you could stay inside the actual castle either. Is this just new, or am I being mistaken? I've never been to Disney, but heck... if I get to stay in the castle, I'll start packing my bags! :-)
  • CreativeWoman said on Jan 31, 2008....
I'm so happy for you guys!  I've said it before, but I really do mean it....you guys are a wonderful love story!  You are starting off on the right foot and it's great everyone in your life is so happy for you.

i think it's great that your mother was able to your MIL to calm down, and moreover, it's fantastic that she sees that her dreams aren't nat's or your's.

all in all, sounds like a good time and i think it's great that it fit w/ you guys and how you wanna do thing. :>

YUP - you can actually stay at the Castle inside the park now... in fact they have a very small number of very very plush suites... I figure if you go "off season" (not that there ever truly is an off off season there) you may be able to get a good deal.  Check out their website - And I figure your Princess Natalie deserves to stay in a castle.. :)   (you're welcome Natalie!)
  • MissMimi said on Jan 31, 2008....

et, your mom is a very smart lady.

Listen, I have an almost never used crockpot that we got for a wedding gift.  You know, just in case you wanted it or anything...

  • evil_twin said on Jan 31, 2008....
    mamie--Thank you!

sunshine--I'd never heard of that either! Maybe we'll see you there? :-P

CW--Thank you :-) I'm glad that everything is working out good for us too!

silver--No, you didn't miss it! I was slow writing it :-P But it was a good time and my mom is a wonderful mediator/ass kicker. Plus she throws a good party too!

future--I'm going to have to look into that! I'd never heard of that before...I think my princess does deserve to stay in a castle :-)

mimi--We have a crockpot! Natalie bought it thinking it would be great to have dinner ready when we got home. But so far it's been used once....who wants to prepare a meal in a pot first thing in morning? But thanks for the offer!

    quietone--It was fun! Thanks :-)
