When I was in my first year of college, an acquaintance of mine had signed up for a music competition in a city 150 miles away and his ride had fallen through. It was late at night when he told me of wanting to sing and play the song he had written, but it was for that morning at 8 o'clock.

I told him to grab his guitar and I'd take him.

About fifty miles out in the high desert with clear skies and a full moon, we decided it would be neat to drive without headlights. We did find this too neat and drove almost 100 miles this way. That is until a state trooper pulled out from behind us. Not terribly happy, he checked our license and smelled the drinks we had in plastic cups. Satisfied there was no drinking, he let us go with a warning and a promise to drive with headlights.

We arrived at the competition and my new buddy did his thing. We found out later that he won first place, but the college misplaced the letter from them so he missed out on the advanced competition.

Oh, well.

Another time I was on a date eating dinner. I'd only dated her a couple times as she told me of having a sister who wanted to move to our city.

I said "lets go get her".

She said "now?"

I said "sure, I'm game"

She said "aaall riiight"

It was about seven or eight in the evening and we left without even a toothbrush on the twelve hour drive and had a great trip talking the whole way.

When we got there, I grabbed a motel room and slept while she and her sister loaded the truck. My date slept in the back of the truck most of the way home under her sister's junk while her sister and I enjoyed one another (talking).

These two girls turned out to be a couple of my best friends for years. My date is now living in the deep South working in communications, and her sister is an RN in south Texas.

Some of my wild ideas and spontaneous moments are better left alone, so I'll ask you:

What were your wild ideas you carried through?

How about spontaneous moments?

I think my wildest idea I had without much thought put into it was to quit my job sell my home that I had just bought 3 weeks earlier...and move 3,000 miles away to Washington state.  Sight unseen, no job, no place to live lined up.  I have an aquaintance drive my car across country with a few of my belongings and I flew.  I went with some people I had only known for a very short time.  It ended up being a good move for me and I stayed there for 10 years.  I needed this time to grow up I think!

there was a blog on this exact topic late 2006 or early 2007, but i can't seem to track it down.

in that blog, i wrote about two spur-of-the-moment, leap-of-faith acts that i did long ago. one was to go on an unplanned long-distance trip in my dilapidated pickup, carrying stuff that the secret police would have loved to get their hands on. the other, i wrote about in my summer radio-kid blog.

before i forget. there's this third spontaneous moment i had about 15 years ago. i grew a beard. it was unplanned. it just happened. i didn't even have to move a muscle...lol.

around the years 1990-1994, i found myself tossed about in a series of mostly unlucky incidents, and finally, insulated into a cocoon-like environment. (sorry, can't give details for now.) that was when i grew a beard. caterpillars grow wings and turn into butterflies. i grew a beard, but didn't turn into a wizard haha.

when i finally came out of that cocoon around 1995, most of my friends (who hadn't seen me at all in the preceding years) asked me, "what's with the beard. did you become a cave-dwelling hermit or shaolin monk or something?" they weren't way off the mark, but not one of them knew the real story.

hey moon, i wrote a post about passing by a spontaneous moment...perhaps it was that one?  i put a bunch of my posts in draft mode a month or two ago, so it might be buried in the archives....

beyond, i really really adore being spontaneous.

i can't tell you how much i adore it.

to me it's like an adventure!

so i've done some nutty things in the name of shaking things up...and proving to myself that i'm not too old for adventure.

two summers ago my kids and i were at the pool.  it was around sundown and we had no plans for the weekend....
on the spur of the moment i decided we were going down the shore but we weren't going home to pack - weren't going to grocery shop........we were just going to get into the van as we were and drive down.

the kids thought it was great.

we stopped at a kmart or walmart when we got down there for pj's and toothbrushes.....and we all got one new outfit to last the weekend, besides our bathing suits and shorts....

    it was alot of fun.

the last really spontaneous thing i did was take an afternoon off from work a year ago this past october and spend it walking thru some trails at a state park.  it was 3 hours alone......doing something i wanted to do on the spur of the moment.

not the most exciting adventure, but it too, was fun.

quiet- That was quite the wild idea. And it sounds like it turned out ok for you. I did something kind of similar. At a young age I left my hometown with a friend and we moved to St. Louis, 21 hours away. He only lasted a month, I stayed. It was rough at times but was probably my best learning experience in life.

moon- I came here in January of 2007 so I guess I missed that blog. If you ever feel ok about telling of your four years in a cocoon, I'd like to hear that one. Speaking of a beard, I never had one but did once grow a mustache because my ex wanted me to. The damned thing looked like Hitler's mustache, so I shaved it off. That's the entire bio of my long facial hair.

secret- After reading you for a year I had a sneaking suspicion you were a spontaneous lover. Your comment sounds familiar. Was it in one of your blogs? If so, I think I read it. My wife has always wanted me to be more spontaneous, but as the years passed, I became more regimented. I'll still do some spontaneous things, but nothing like in the post.

You could call my mom and I going to Europe spontanious, we only bought our tickets a month before and only booked a couple of hotels for a few nights and it worked out surprisingly well for 2 weeks, especially since I'd never been there and she hadn't been there for 40 + years.  Another time I drove 9 hours to see a guy.  I left right after work at 9pm and didn't get there till 4am, never driven that far before either, I like being spontanious though!

i'm not a big one for being spontaneous, to be honest. i'm just not good "on my feet", as the sayiing goes. i'll try to think of something--i'm insufficiently caffeinated just now. :>

Well the most spontaneous thing I've ever done was deciding to get married in someone's backyard. But maybe it doesn't count as totally spontaneous because it did require a few days planning to get a marriage license....

But once me and my old girlfriend decided to take a scenic trip up the coast of California. We just grabbed a few things, jumped in the car and took off. We had no destination or plan and just enjoyed the scenery.

We stopped in whatever towns had motels, which were always crappy and falling apart. But that made it more fun. We went all the way to Oregon, then we drove back again. It was one of the best trips I've ever taken. I'm not much of a planner anyway. I love spontaneity.

ninja- I'm kind of surprised that trip turned out so well with little planning also. But I'm glad you went because I loved those pics and posts about that trip.

Ed- Actually, I'm not big on spontaneity either except that in my younger years I had my moments. A little now and then is good, it takes you away from the humdrum and has a special feeling. A few minutes planning is sometimes all that's needed.

ET- Your trip brought back memories. A friend and I went to California touring from Long Beach to Frisco. We had thoughts of getting work in LA but the city was quite overwhelming to a couple young guys from a small town in New Mexico. However, like you, it was one of the best trips I've ever taken also.

I don't have a reputation for being spontaneous.  I'm more the "planner" type.

There was that one time on prom night. .  when my high school sweetheart and I went out - in "GREENE" County, Pennsylvania - and painted the "Green County Line" across all four lanes of the interstate with lime green paint.  In our prom clothes.  That was fun. =)

Other times, for fun, we used to take sheets, and around dusk walk to the cemetary near my house. . . which was located on a steep curve.  We would cover ourselves with the dingy sheets, and lay down on top of the graves.  When cars would go by, we would sit up slowly and wave our arms.  You'd be surprised how many cars turned around and came back for a second look.  That was fun too. =)
    (Hey, I was 16.  Of COURSE I could be a ghost! ;~)

Hello my friend.  It has been a long time...hasn't it?

What an awesome idea for a post!

Hmmm...of course I have taken tons of road trips that were totally unplanned.  Once in the sunset hours of a day, an old flame stopped by and rekindled our friendship.  We took a road trip to a huge lake that was about 8 hours away.  That was great fun and we resolved a few things.  It was late when we arrived, but sat by the lake and talked for hours on end.  When the sun came up and the restaurants opened...we ate breakfast and headed home.  It was all good.

Let's see...I have taken so many road trips that some of my friends and even my oldest daughter thought I'd always be taking off on my little adventures.  The last few times she visited, she said she was very disappointed in the way I had slowed down.  She should have been along on the past few weeks/month or so!

Whenever I feel this world closing in on me, I find a spot where I can be alone with the Lord.  It isn't easy these days.  But I think I just found another very special place.  Maybe I'll write about that someday...or maybe I'll wait until that secret place is discovered by my family!!!

I hope, trust and pray that you are all well.  I have missed each and all of you.

    Blessings and hugs to all,

P.S. Evil Twin!!!  Do I understand that you and Nurse Cutie tied the knot while I was away???  :  D  (that's me, with a BIG smile, of course!!!)

((quick peek while at work... :-))

secret -- yes, i remember that blog now. it's probably there that i posted my recollections of that crazy midnight ride.

beyond -- i will, eventually. but for now, my friend, i'm still trying to break out of my present cocoon ... :-)

  • beyondtheveil said on Jan 31, 2008....
grace- Now, painting across an interstate is a new one on me, but I do bet it was fun. I loved the cemetery story. I'd have gone back for a second look too.

truth- Have I ever missed you?- yes, I have. I've been thinking about you every day, where have you been?

I understand about the road trips. I still do that and many times alone. Its good to have a wife that's ok with me getting time by myself. We need a post from you!!

    moon- Fair enough.

Wow!  What is it about me, on this website???  I just get back on and the virus I had fended off so successfully comes whacking back on me without warning!  Man.  That was bad.

I'll be back on regularly though beyond.  I read this and "the other" and I will get caught up today.  I want to write a blog today too.  Help me fend off that blog eating SC monster again my friend?  ; )

    Truth : )
