There's is a craft catalog on my desk that's whispering my name. I shouldn't have opened it, but I did. Inside there are two pattern books that I must have.

I love working with yarn. I have a set of lap knitting looms in various sizes. I make hats and scarves out of the coolest funky chunky yarns I can find. I give them as gifts to nieces and nephews at Christmas. They really love them. I have a hat in progress on the loom right now for my mom. Not to pat myself too hard on the back, but they look as good as any you'll buy in the store. I'm proud of them.

One of the pattern books would teach me how to make more things on the looms. I would really love that. I really like giving handmade gifts and teaching myself something new.

The other pattern book is for crocheting little dish cloths and hand towels. My creative brain is already thinking I could use them in gift baskets for weddings and/or showers.

Handmade cards and gifts are sort of my thing. People seem to look forward to them.

So, I think my groaning bookcase can possibly hold a couple more books...especially if it allows the creative side of me to shine.

I'm feeling the urge to create.

What about you? Do you ever have the urge to be creative?

Yep!  I have thinned out my craft books several times since moving to the bay area and I'm probably due to do so again.  I even joined a crochet exchange where you sign up to make squares for an afghan and exchange your square with about 20 other ladies.  This way you get an afghan with 20 different patterns.  It was a lot of work but very cool.

I used to enjoy being creative in the kitchen -- baking and cooking -- but not so much any more.

My husband calls them junk mail, but I love the fabric and yarn catalogs I get.  Ah, so many ideas, so little time...

I have the urge to create all the time. One of the bookshelves in our home office is littered with jewelry making materials--sterling silver wires for earrings, glass beads, hemp and ceramic beads. Stuffed in our storage closets are is a plastic drawer organizer system that is full of specialty papers for making homemade cards as well as craft paint, paint smudges, and on and on.

I think some day that closet might explode.

You know, CW, if you are looking for more ways to diversify your income, you should consider checking out some arts and crafts festivals and perhaps trying to make enough scarves and hats to sell some at local festivals. It does cost to rent a booth/tent at most of them.

Or you might check to see if your town or the closest bigger town has a craft mall where people can rent out booths that they stock with craft items. Where we used to live in Texas there was one that as a mix of a craft mall/antique mall where the vendors rent "booths" (really just a space divided with pegboard walls), and each vendor had a number that they tagged their items with. You just have to keep the stock up in the "booth" while the person that manages the craft mall gets a percentage of your sales for supplying the employees who answer questions, work as cashiers, etc.

I knit, crochet, cross stitch, needlepoint, paint, love to cook creatively, and draw a little.  Being creative is a "must" for me.

~ OMG, don't let me near a craft book or store.  I have to have a 3 br. house because one room is just for my crafts and sewing!  I also have those hat looms and made a bunch for the mitten tree this year.  I also gave a few away as a gift.  They are so fun and "easy".  I love easy!  Where did you get the books on how to make other stuff?  My SIL makes pillows with the ones I gave her for xmas.  She has 2 long straight looms like the round ones, but I couldn't find a book anywhere with new patterns.  I also crochet, quilt, craft about anything at least once.

    UI,
That sounds like a lot of fun.  I like those sort of things because the stories behind them make them priceless.  :-)

    Mimi,
I always want something out of craft catalogs.  I just don't have time to do it all either. :-)  I understand about the fabric.  I'm the same way with yarn.

    Zayda,
I'll bet your jewelry is beautiful.  I understand about your closet.  Nobody better peek under the bed in my spare bedroom. :-)

There is a local store that takes craft items on consignment.  I've given that a thought or two.  I'm also considering selling on ebay or etsy. At one time I was making handmade quilt top pillows and selling them to a craft store in PA.  I sort of gave that up when there was so much tragedy in my family.  I'm going to give this a whirl I think.  Thanks for prodding me.  :-)

    Grace,
All that creativity is good for feeding the soul. :-)  I've never done needlepoint.  Is it hard?

    quietone,
I have both kinds of looms too.  I also have a square crotchet loom that I haven't used much.  I actually had forgotten I had it until I ran across it the other day when I was rummaging though some crafty things.  I ordered my books this morning through Mary Maxim.  There's a zillion things I would love to order from there.  :-)  Have fun shopping.

Oh oh, danger zone ahead!! LOL  I will go check out the link..leaving my card in my wallet far far away!  Yes isn't it amazing what you run across in the crafty things?  I have enough "stuff" to keep me busy for a long time when I retire!  LOL thanks for the link!
  • GracefullyGrowing said on Jan 29, 2008....
CW - Nah, needlepoint is not hard at all.  It's similar to cross stitch, but IMO more fun because you can use yarn and hole-canvas, or even plastic canvas.
  • CreativeWoman said on Jan 29, 2008....
    quietone,
Isn't that the truth!  I could keep busy for ages crafting.  It's too busy that life gets in the way of it.  :-)  You're welcome for the link.

    Grace,
I've always threatened to try needlepoint.  The kits can be expensive sometimes, but I'm sure they are beautiful when finished.  I've thought about doing pillow tops.  Have you ever done those?

CW - I've done several pillows, and several wall hangings  Great fun, that!  I think the thing I like best is that it looks like tapestry, rather than just a picture.  It has a depth to it.  For years pillows and a matching wall hanging is what I gave as wedding and baby gifts.  When I was a teenager I designed and needlepointed an upholstery for the seat of my piano bench.  It was my version of a vinyard in Tuscany.  My mom still has a picture of it, and won't let me have it.  "You'll have to wait until I die!!" she tells me, every time I ask.  The piano bench, however, was destroyed by someone - darn their hides!

Sure do CW. Been all day finding the right gauge for a sweater for Freyja and then I've been all day practicing a cable pattern that won't get to be right.

I say good for you I am sure the hats are wonderful. Do show a a picture later and how big is the loom?  I see it is lab one but still the same I am curious.
  • CreativeWoman said on Jan 29, 2008....
    Grace,
Those sound like wonderful gifts to receive.  That piano bench cover must have been beautiful. .

    skald,
I'll take a pick of the hat when it is finished and one of my looms too.  I don't know how to knit with the needles, but I sure to love the loom.  I loved the way the last sweater you did turned out.  You are very talented.  :-)

I was glad to finally get a cap and scarf crocheted for my brother before Christmas.  I got it done a week before I was so happy I was able to accomplish it in time to give it to him.

    carolinagal,
I'll bet he loved it.  I like giving gifts like that too.  :-)

Craft catalogs keep coming in the mail and they are hard for me to resist. Each page I turn seems to have something I want to try and make. I can't help myself.

I'm especially drawn to things that are made with yarn or that can be...
Look! I'm not bitching about work! I'm doing Art!...
