Over the past few days I came into possession of a autobiography written by my grandfather.  He is my mom's father who died a few years before I was born.  I know so little about him that is reliable since most people's memories of the dead tend to be carefully filtered to only include the good. (not saying he was a bad person, but no one is a saint)  I'm very excited to hear about him in his own words but I have one small problem.

It's written in german.  Probably a dialect.  I don't speak or read german so I'm still being stymied.

Where does a person get something like this translated?  I don't want to use a family member (not that any who speak german are talking to me) since I cannot be sure that they will give an unbiased translation.  There are characters in the document that I don't have on my keyboard, so I don't think I can use software or internet services.

If there is a local university or college I would post something on a board there.  There are a lot of students that would love to make a few extra bucks, and it'd be cheaper than a professional.  My sister speaks german fluently but I know she's much to far away to help you :(  Good luck!

tizzy - good idea.  I'm about 20 miles from Stanford, I'm sure they must have a languages department.

MsStar - I'm familiar with babelfish and such, but there are characters in the document that I don't have corresponding keys for.  This was handwritten before 1959.

Hey UI!  This could take a while, but I recently did a translation and I had to enter one word at a time (can't do a block of text) and then you have to put it in order to make sense in the english language.  It's basically a dictionary.  If there are multiple meanings, they provide them to you...or even if what you're entering looks wrong, there will be a "did you mean..."

    I hope it helps!

daily - I might have to do that.  I did look up the linguistics department of Stanford University and sent an email to an affiliated professor there asking if he could recommend a student.  Haven't heard back from him.

AA - I'm glad you're feeling better now.  I was worried when I didn't hear from you.
