One show I always watch on tv is The L Word. I got involved with the characters from the start, so I have to keep up with them. But there's a few things I wish they didn't do.

For one thing, why do most of them have to have so much money? Even Shane, who seemed to have nothing much financially, ends up owning a hair salon. Bette is loaded. Jenny is now loaded. Tina is a big shot. Kit owns The Planet. Then there's the British heiress. There are a few who aren't, like Tasha the soldier in Iraq, but the median income of these characters is far beyond what your typical lesbian is making. Why does it have to be lifestyles of the rich and famous?

Along the same lines, they are way too pretty, and it gets in the way. The ugly duckling of the group is Alice Piazecki, and she's pretty. Knockout Jenny Schechter is complaining about the actress who is playing her in Jenny's movie, because the actress is too pretty. She looks like Miss America. Jenny, a stunner, is complaining about how pretty someone else is, so you can imagine how high they set the bar on this show.

Another quibble I have is that there is too much drama and change.

I realize there are counter arguments to all of this, relating to what people want to see on tv. But from my perspective, there are a lot of lesbians out there who have very interesting stories to tell because they are living them, and those stories are better than the ones on the show. Plus, they are real. Come on, who is more of a drama queen stirring up things than a lesbian? Pretty much nobody. They don't have to be so unrealistically rich and pretty to make for a good series. I'm thinking that the Lana and Sharon show would be better. Just two people I know.

I really like the L word but like you have found it somewhat frustrating. Especially the last series. I won't comment on the attractiveness of the actresses but agree that the character's financial situations is a way from the norm.

Oh and I detest the 'British' heiress character.

Q - The L Word is a Showtime soap opera about lesbians. I found it funny, while watching The Sopranos, that a character in Sopranos (probably Tony but I don't remember for sure) talked about The L Word during a Sopranos episode. I always thought of those two shows as the top two premium channel series. HBO's superstar was Sopranos while Showtime's superstar is The L Word. I liked both of them more in their early seasons than I did in their later seasons, but I stayed with both because I got involved with the characters.

A - They really go off the deep end with their mega wealthy characters. There are several of them. I don't understand the appeal of that. I'd rather watch characters who live like I do, financially speaking. I prefer some reality, and never was attracted to Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Maybe the problem is that the people who control the show write about what they know, rather than writing about what the rest of us know.

L - I totally agree with you that the first season was amazing and it went downhill later. And I didn't like it when the tennis pro died either. I also didn't like them writing Marina out of the script. And I don't like what they did with Jenny Schechter's character, turning her into a total a-hole after turning her into a total flake. I liked her a lot better as a sympathetic and realistic character.
