My Father's birthday is on February 11th and he is a hard man to buy for.  I have pretty much bought him everything possible for every sports team that he loves.  So I asked him what he wants for his birthday.  He said he wants to go see Van Halen.  They are coming to our area in March and he would really like to go see them, but my mother won't go (big surprise).  My dad will be 57 and he wants to go see Van Halen.

He has always taken me to concerts all my life.  I can't tell you how many times he took me to see Rick Springfield when I was little!!  When I got older it was U2.  Every U2 concert I have been too, my Dad has gone too.  I've always thought it was really neat to have a Dad cool enough to listen to current music.  All my friends dad's listened to "golden oldies" and stuff and were always amazed that my dad listened to "cool" music.

I personally liked Van Halen the most when Sammy Hagar was singing.  I'm pretty sure I am in the minority in this but, oh well.  I'm not crazy about David Lee Roth, but I do like Van Halen, so I coughed up the $90/ticket to take my Dad to see Van Halen for his birthday.

Happy Birthday Dad.......

I love Sammy Hagar. In fact, I feel like Van Halen really transformed themselves into serious musicians with the addition of Sammy to their band. David Lee Roth was such a show off, that he overtook the music with his crazy stage antics. I'm not a big David Lee Roth fan. He was better on his own, where he could be as stupid as he wanted. And Van Halen definitely became a better band musically, without him, in my opinion.

I think it's awesome your dad wants to see Van Halen! It'd be fun to go, just for the experience and to make your dad happy :-)

OMG...seriously Kyle, you are the first person I've met that actually agrees with me!  I hope there are others out there....I completely agree with you that I think Van Halen became better when David Lee Roth left.  He was a "showman" not a musician.

I'm sure it will be interesting and I will definitely share about the concert!

Sammy Hagar all the way. I simply love Hagar and love, as Kyle noted, how Van Halen seemed to grow musically when Hagar joined. Of course I love Hagar and the Waboritas as well. I was just cranking their album Red Voodoo earlier today.

I'm the same age as your Dad, Minnie...well, a year older, but I agree with him. I love the old Van Halen with David Lee Roth.  Maybe it's more a matter of nostalgia for him as it is for me.  We were younger when they were young, and their early songs are probably the ones he likes.
I'm not crazy about the moldy oldies either. My husband and I are like your father, we prefer the "cool" music.  A young friend called to ask me if I left an Englebert Humperdink cd at her house last week.  I said " hello, have we met?"  Aerosmith, maybe...Humperdink?  Uh, no!

Zayda...thanks goodness...like I said to Kyle, you are person #2 that I've met that feels as I do about Hagar!!!  :-)

Twyla....I like the old Van Halen songs, I just don't like David Lee Roth.  When I was growing up my parents listened to music all the time...Beatles...Led Zeplin...all the good stuff.  I had to laugh at the Englebert Humperdink CD...too funny...one of my friends mom's was a Humperdink "groupie"...always had him playing....ick!  :-)  Minnie

MM  now isn't that something!  I was just wondering where you have been. And here you are!!  That was so cool of you to get the tickets for your father.  I myself can tolerate the music, but its almost too hard rock for me.

David Lee Roth was the epitome of Van Halen

DLR over Sammy every day of the week and twice on Sunday !

    FYI...

(I really like Sammy Hagar, just not so much with Van Halen)

I'm not much of a Van Halen, fan, but I gotta go with Sammy.
  • PassionTraveler said on Jan 28, 2008....
    Sammy for sure!

Although both of each lent something different to the musical end products.

FYI, I saw Lover Boy when I was in HighSchool with my dad. My cousin's parents went too, but my cousins weren't allowed. I was the only kid at the concert from my family. You are right, it makes it special with Dad there. :)

I think it totally rocks that you're taking your Dad! I grew up during Van Halen's
peak, and tho' I still like some of the DLR music, he was such a prima-donna,
he ruined the spirit of the band. (Did u  know that no one else with blonde hair
was allowed backstage when DLR was there?) Oh well--he ended up being
an EMT--far cry from "superstar". When Sammy came onboard, VH really
reached their potential, and the fanbase continued to grow. Sammy owns
a Cabo Wabo here in my town. He comes up here often. But when I was 18
he walked right into my job!! And it was all I could do not to jump his bones!!
    (hehe) what an awesome guy...

Van Halen was David Lee Roth; Van Hagar was Sammy Hagar.... both were different in their own ways.

I had the pleasure of seeing both bands (because I don't consider it one band with a new lead singer) they were entertainers when DLR was there, they were musicians when Sammy was there...

BTW - one of the best trainwreck of a concert I have ever been to was "the Sam & Dave" Tour - Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth on the same bill... omg - they would fight over who got to headline each night.  But the concert was an interesting one.

It's just not Van Halen to me with Sammy...
  • Mr_Box said on Jan 28, 2008....

I much prefer Sammy Hagar. I liked the songs much better that he sang with Van Halen. It was a totally different sound.

Of course by the time I was introduced to Van Halen, David Lee Roth was already long gone. But after listening to their older stuff, I didn't care for it the same way.

quietone...yes..I was "quiet" for a while...just commenting here and there with not much to say on my own!  I'm a rock chick and yes..not for everyone!  :-)  MM

Tainted...my dad feels the same way...I guess that is why he wanted to go see them so much.  I guess each guy has their unique sound...with Eddie's great guitar!

    Eilan...another Sammy!!!  :-)  MM

Dang...my comments got totally cut off!

Passion...my mom was in love with "Loverboy"  she listened to them day and night...that album with the lead singers ass in red leather pants....I'm sure I could recite the whole album!  My parents had when they were really young, so they were always younger than my friends parents....so I always had the cool parents!

Holly...I didn't know that about the "blonde" thing, but I totally believe it!  That is soooo cool that you saw Sammy!  Funny how the "rock singer" thing totally elevates the "sexiness" factor!

Future...totally agree with you...this concert should be interesting!

    Tainted....yes...its "Van Hagar" with Sammy...lol

Mr. Box.....yes...I prefer "Sammy's" sound...I'm curious if DLR will sing the songs they did with Sammy...that will be weird!
