I got an iTunes card for Christmas and I finally sat down today and decided I needed to download some music. I had the money burning a hole in my pocket and it's been a month, and I haven't used it! But I sat there staring at the iTunes store for almost an hour, just flipping through song titles. I couldn't think of a single song I wanted to download.

I have a lot of music. Like a ton. My iPod is nearly full and it only contains a fraction of the music I have stored on my computer. My CD collection is pretty much where all my money used to go. I had nothing else to spend money on except music and DVD's. So I think I might possibly already own everything I like. And the few random songs I had written down because I liked the lyrics, iTunes didn't have them.

That was disappointing, to say the least. So I'm here to ask for some song suggestions. I'm not really crazy about country music or rap. And I'm not really into cheesy pop songs from Britney Spears either. I like rock and alternative mostly. Songs with really awesome lyrics are a plus.

Are there any songs you're really into right now that you think I might like? You can just post the artist and title if you want, and I can check them out myself at You Tube or a lyrics site. I'm just at a loss for what to buy myself. Any help is appreciated. I want to spend my money!

I'm really into Finger Eleven and Buckcherry right now.  I love the song Paralyzed by Finger Eleven...its even my ringtone.  Yes, I am a big dork.

You can use your Itunes card to download TV shows, movies and audio books too....just an idea...I have been doing a lot of audio books lately and listening to them in the car...that is when Finger Eleven isn't playing!  lol....

Seether, Three Days Grace, 30 Seconds to Mars (i think thats a band name!), Angels and Airwaves, Blue October, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gorillaz, All American Rejects.....i may be able to come up with more later!
  • evil_twin said on Jan 27, 2008....
minnie--I do like that song Paralyzed! That's a good one. I'm putting that one on my list...I'm not familiar with Buckcherry's music, but I've heard of them. I'll have to check them out too. I thought about download movies and shows, but I already watch everything I like too :-P

lala--Blue October is one of my most favorite bands. I was actually looking for one of their more obscure albums, Argue with a Tree, and iTunes didn't have it. I was bummed out. I like most of those bands you mentioned too, but a few I hadn't heard of. I'll have to check them all out. Are there any specific songs by these artists that you like the most?
  • lalalalalala said on Jan 27, 2008....
with Seether, i like "Fake It," and "Truth"
with Three Days Grace= "Never Too Late," and "Animal I've Become"
I'll keep hunting down song titles for ya on the rest!
  • minniemouse said on Jan 27, 2008....

Ooohhh...I love Three Days Grace...Never too late and Pain...love those!

Buckcherry kinda reminds me of a more modern version of 80's hair bands, but only because a lot of their lyrics are...well...naughty!  For instance "Crazy Bitch"...I really like that song, but I have to be careful I don't have my children in the car!!!!  If you listen to it and hear the lyrics, you'll understand why!

Puddle of Mud has some new stuff out that I have been meaning to check out too...

  • lalalalalala said on Jan 27, 2008....
Red Hot Chili Peppers= "Dani California" and "Tell Me Baby"
U2= "Beautiful Day", "Where the Streets Have No Name"  "With or Without You" "still Haven't Found"
    Gorillaz= "Feel Good Inc"
  • lalalalalala said on Jan 27, 2008....
All American Rejects = "Move Along" "Dirt Little Secret" basically the whole Move Along album is fairly good

i thought of another. you may already have some of, Nirvana! All Nirvan is good in my book!

well i hope you like these songs... =)

kyle, it might be helpful if you listed a few artist that you particularly like, and why--that might make it easier for the rest of us to recommend something you might actually like.

that you like music w/ strong lyrics is hardly surprising. :>

lala mentioned u2, but she mentioned their more recent stuff and while i like it too, i'm also a fan of their older stuff: i'd start w/ their album war.

for clever lyrics, i'm a fan of BNL: some very funny and clever lyrics in their stuff, IMHO.

    Have you heard of That1Guy?

I wrote a post, The Moon Is Disgusting, which contains a link to his site. It flipped me out to hear him mentioned at a party over the weekend, considering I had just posted about him.

i'm with tbs230 on most of those. i have to ask - is that a taking back sunday reference? lyrically, i think you would have a hard time beating anything by taking back sunday, so if you haven't bought those, (which you likely have) they are a must! i'm on a hip-hop kick now myself, so if you are open to that check out this one, Dynamic, Jockin Me.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=nWv1L_mDx40
If you can deal with harder stuff a band called Stiletto Formal just came out of Phoenix and toured with Jimmy Eat World. They are sooo talented.
good luck spending your money! and, anytime you need advice on spending your money i will find you something to buy! lol.

I don't have enough time right now to comment to everyone individually, but I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions! I'm going to try and check out all these artists and songs. Some of them I already love, but there is a lot here I'm not familiar with! So this will be fun.

And just to answer Ed's question, some of my favorite artists are: Blue October, Bright Eyes, Muse, Bruce Springsteen, Sarah McLachlan, Linkin Park, Poe, Metallica, Staind, and Nickelback. Just to name a few. My tastes are varied, but all these artists have awesome lyrics that mean something to me.

I will be back, and definitely checking out your suggestions :-) Thanks everyone!

My favorite most recent download was Boom Boom Ba by Metisse.  There were a couple of other songs on the album that were good.  They're alternative music.

Awe...E_T!  I went to a show Friday night and the opener was Fred Shafer.  The lyrics in all his songs will move you, I promise!  I love his song Breakaway.  It's not Kelly Clarkson's, it's his own, lol. My Husband said that he thought he had the raspy voice like Bruce Springsteen.

Fred Shafer:  Letting You Go, Breakaway, Silent Symphony

    Living Syndication: 13 Minutes

The Fly's (I know, old skool): Got You Where I Want You

    Filter:  Take a Picture

    Landon Pigg:  Coffee Shop
(The song in  the DeBeer's Diamond Commercial)

    Puddle of Mudd:  Blurry

I haven't listened to the actual radio in a while so I'm always late on what's current.  I like to find artists that I've never heard of.  I often visit Bilboard online and look around there.

I'll be looking back at this post for input too!  I love music!

Hmm...check out Celtic Woman (seriously! "The Sky And The Dawn And The Sun" is one of my all-time favorite songs because it's so darned uplifting/euphoric). Also, if you're not already into Five For Fighting, that's another good direction.

You already listed a lot of my favorite non-country artists, and I'm currently without my 4+ gigs of music, which will remain locked into my non-functioning old hard drive forever, it seems, so I'm not sure what else I'd recommend right offhand. From one music junkie to another, I hope you find some good new ground to cover!

I'm still stuck in the 70's mucic, but I enjoyed looking at some of the artists I have been missing by reading through this post.  My son was the one who always kept me up with the times--sticking earphones on my head and saying, "Mom, listen to this song!"  I remember he was the one who got me into Guns "N Roses.
  • Zaraida said on Jan 28, 2008....
I keep buying CD's also although I've never downloaded a darn thing.  I'm really into Camel right now.  They are considered "Progressive Rock" and their music is really different from what you hear nowadays.  (I can't stand Britney and her type of music).  Anyway, some of the Camel CD's you might want to give a listen to are:

    "Nude"
"Music Inspired by the Snow Goose"
    "A Wink and a Nod"
    Moonmadness"

There are many others and I have bought just about all of them.  I keep listening to them over and over again and just can't seem to get enough of them.  Love, love, love Camel!

I'm pretty sure you probably have everything I like. We like the same sort of stuff for the most part.

My tastes are all over the place. It depends on my mood. But I really like Grant Lee Buffalo. His lyrics are pretty awesome. I especially like Happiness and Mona Lisa.

If you don't have those, give them a listen. You'll like it.

  • evil_twin said on Jan 28, 2008....
I've been reading all of these great suggestions and making a list. There is a lot of good stuff here that I'd never heard of! Thanks everyone. I'm sure I can find some good music to download now. I appreciate all the help!
