My birthday is coming up very soon (February 4th) and I promised myself that if I still wanted to get a tattoo - which I have since I was 18 years old - I was going to get one this year and give it to myself as a birthday present.

Now, I will not get this tattoo until I take off the weight I have gained (45 lbs) and started a new job (hopefully soon).  The reason I am waiting to lose the weight is because I want the tattoo on my belly covering up some scars that I received from an appendectomy two years ago.  Also, I think that I need a flat canvas to show it off and right now the canvas is a bit rounded <grin>

The reason why I am waiting for a new job is because this is going to be an expensive tattoo - I want to go to California and have Hannah Aitchison (if you watch LA Ink you will know who she is) do the work.  I think her work is beautiful.  And hell, if I have to get on the show to do it, then I will be on the show and let the world see my virgin skin get inked.

I know exactly what I want as a design - it hasn't changed in 22 years -  and I will tell you later.  Howver, I am curious

Ladies and Gentlemen:

a) do you have ink? and if so, what do you have on your bod and where? <salacious grin>
b) why did you get that tattoo?  Did it hurt?
c) do you regret it?
d for those who do have ink, do you want more?  If so, what?
e) for those without ink, would you ever get a tattoo?  If so, what and where?
f) color or black and grey?

    Yes, I have ink.

I have an abstract cross/star on my lower back.

You can see the story of why I got my first tattoo here.

    No, I don't regret it.

Yes, I plan on getting more--several more. I haven't fully decided on some of them but I am getting a rather large koi with Kanji surrounding it on my back shoulder.

My current one is black. The Koi will be in color.

if you're interested in ink, i recommend consulting ladygamer and zayda, both of whom are pretty knowledgeable about the subject. i know others are too, but they're the ones whose names spring to my mind.

    a. nope, none for me. body modding just isn't my thing.

LOL - Zayda - I really liked your post on your first tattoo; thanks for the re-direction over there.  I love Koi's - but why that? and what will the kanji say?  or is that too personal?

Ed - any particular reason - or just not interested.

No ink here yet, and DH is firmly against it.

That said, I'm considering it - something combining a butterfly and a claddagh, I think, but I'm still working on ideas. It'd be in color. Not sure on location.

Zayda, I love the koi idea! :) I'm sure that'll be pretty.

I went through that phase too. My husband got me a tattoo for my 40th b'day. I ended up with a hummingbird on my right calf. It was supposed to be a small one, but it takes up my whole calf! It hurt like Hell, but I am so glad I did it.
  • Lucytorial said on Jan 26, 2008....
I don't have one and I couldn't get one done, its a little too permanent for me, my hb has one and its symbolic of his beliefs and suits him, he doesn't regret it at all as it reminds him of where he has come from and hwo he got here and how hard the journey was.
  • totallywornout said on Jan 26, 2008....
My husband started getting tatoos when we had 4 great friends all die in the same year. It was really hard on him, so he had one tatoo that tied the memories of all of them together. His next tat was for the memory of our family. I only have the one tat and will probably not do it again. I think about getting another one, but...........

I got my first tattoo last July.  I waited til my husband was out of town and went and did the deed.  I don't regret it at all.  I think it's beautiful.  I have a butterfly in shades of blue and violet perched on my left shoulder.  Zee's help was invaluable in helping me select what I wanted.  (Thanks again, Zee baby!)  I'll be getting my second one this summer.

I guess I could have waited til I lost umpteen hundreds of pounds or I reached this or that goal, but my tat is a symbol of reaching the end of a long hard road, and I didn't want to wait a minute longer.  Get it now, and enjoy it!
  • PassionTraveler said on Jan 26, 2008....
Like you, I got a tattoo last year for my birthday. Te previous year I lost someone I loved, and my job within a month. It was a way to symbolize who i was, a tribute to the man I loved and a way to heal. I had also just taken on a new job as well. For me, it's on my neck, so no weight issues for that one. Ironically, the guy who did mine now works in the LA Ink shop, but although he's a well known tattoo artist, he's not one of the regulars on the show. He did a fabulous job and I want him to do some more detail work on it soon. I have a Raven atop a world globe. Since it was on the nape of my neck, yes, it hurt, but you will survive. ;) I do not regret it. I don't want more now, other than the enhancements to the one I already have. We discussed color, but settled on black, it fit as a raven is black and my world globe is the longitude/latitude lined type of rendering. See my poem post about it. Inked

    a) do you have ink? and if so, what do you have on your bod and where?

Yes, and I just got it last October.  On the top of my right foot.

    b) why did you get that tattoo?  Did it hurt?

Several friends and I were sitting around talking and having a good time.  ONe mentioned we should all get matching tatoo's.  So we did.

It didn't hurt that bad, but it did hurt about like a bee sting.

    c) do you regret it?

Nope.  I like it.  It's delicate and pretty.  I can't wait till summer to show it off again.

d for those who do have ink, do you want more?  If so, what?

    Nah.  I'm not wanting more.

    f) color or black and grey?

It's a teal colored star, outlined in black, with black squiglies coming out the top (to show movement - a shooting star) and four black dots at the bottom of it, progressively smaller as the dots go down.

    i want a little one...in a strange spot.
black...... a tiny one on my temple.
i know it would be massively painful there.
but i can't think of anywhere else i'd want one.
i likely will never get it.......it's to conspicuous. but, *shrug8 maybe someday when i'm braver.

i'm a chicken because of wondering about the pain. but i've always wanted one on my ankle going up to the calf, of a climbing yellow rose with a bumble bee near by. my name means bee in hebrew and i love yellow roses so.... maybe one day.
  • rupert7 said on Jan 27, 2008....
Just remember that it will be there forever, unless you are willing to risk horrible scaring, and I have seen that. I woman I knew had Tats removed from her arms and was left with the most horrible scars. I would never get a Tat,then again there are many things I would not do!

Its a personal decision,a professional Tat can look OK (well, thats a matter of opinion!)
  • crybabylu said on Jan 27, 2008....
I think some tatoos look really nice.  I don't have any, but I just never personally wanted one. My daughter, Cindy has a rose with a heart thru it on her right ankle, and she wears a little gold chain around that ankle and I think it looks nice.
  • FutureGoddess said on Jan 27, 2008....

thank you all for responding and for the honesty -

TOTALLY:  I have heard about people getting memorial tatts and think it is a beautiful thing.

Miss Mimi:  LOL - I love the fact that you waited till hubby was out of town.  What's the second one going to be?  Where? Yes, I know I should get it immediately, but the reasons why I am not is because these are transitions and goals I NEED to achieve in order to have the tat I want have the meaning it will have.  It has that meaning now, but not as strongly as it will when I become a current Goddess rather than a Future Goddess <grin>

Lucy - that's part of the reason I am getting mine - to symbolize what I am, will and have gone through over the past 40 years.

Grace:  I like that story - I am glad you don't regret it since usually "group" tatts are done spur of the moment without thinking and many do regret it afterwards. It sounds really pretty.

Fallyn:  Like Kat VonD?  she has stars tattooed on her temple - I think it looks beautiful, but like you just a bit too conspicuous - and with my profession it's not "professional enough" .  Silly I know, but we still live in a society which judges on looks.  Sad

MeMyI - I am a bit chicken too - but I still really want to get it. We will see what happens

Rupert - I agree - totally personally decision.  And I am going to make sure that I am absolutely positive that I want this on my bod for the rest of my life - I understand the removal process is more painful and incredibly expensive compared to the actual tattoo.

Crybaby - did you have an issue with Cindy's tat right when she got it, or where you totally accepting.  I think it sounds like a really pretty tattoo...

I have wanted a tatoo on my lower back for years, I still intend to get one but I cant decide what to get :-) xx
  • GracefullyGrowing said on Jan 27, 2008....
FG - I read your comment to Crybaby, and just LOL when I remembered my older daughters reactions to my getting a tatoo.  We had told all our kids they had to wait till they were 18 to do "permanant" things to their body.  That didn't make them happy campers.  All three of them were quite shocked when they found out I got a tatoo, and my youngest daughter actually took the opportunity to rub it in how parents are "do as I say but not as I do" - jokingly, of course.  How's that for a role reversal?  hehehe
  • crybabylu said on Jan 27, 2008....
FutureGoddess--I was totally fine with whatever she wanted to do, it is her body.  She was 21 when she got hers.
  • FutureGoddess said on Jan 27, 2008....

Diva - I'm sure people will tell  you - don't just get one - get something that has some meaning to you.

Grace: LOL - That cracked me up!  My parents were the same way, but they were only talking about pierced ears and then only till we were 16.... LOL  .

    You're a cool Mom Crybabylu!

  • MissMimi said on Jan 27, 2008....
FG -- that reasoning I totally understand.  I got mine just as I was coming out of a serious clinical depression.  It was a long dark road, and I needed to honor the painful work I had to go through.  That's the significance of the butterfly -- a rebirth.  My next one will also be on my shoulder.  I want to be able to look down and see it.
  • Battycat said on Jan 27, 2008....
I'm too chicken, I like the idea, but only if I could get rid of it if I didn't want it anymore.
  • FutureGoddess said on Jan 27, 2008....

Batty - try Temporary Tattoos - they wash off...LOLOL

MissMimi - my tattoo is going to be three butterflies - there are three to symbolize the metamorphosis I am going through, body, mind and soul.  (plus I am trying to cover three small scars which I got when I had my appendix taken out - the scars are on the left hand side of my torso - they did it laproscopically, but screwed up a bit... oh, well - at least I am healthy).  If you go to www.butterflyutopia.com you will see the Monarch, The Blue Morpho Menlelaus, and a third one which I am not sure which - I am not looking for life size per se but life like looking.  The Monarch because it travels great distances to migrate - and I feel like I have traveled great distances to get where i am today, The Blue Morpho - an extremely rare south american butterfly - based on a true story I read about courage and giving back and I still haven't figured out the third.

I don't have a tattoo.....but I've been wanting to get one for awhile! I couldn't decide if I wanted to get a fairy, a dolphin, or a moon w/ a star next to it. Maybe someday I'll get all three?? LOL

But so far I haven't done it. I want one on my ankle though. Nothing too big, but not tiny.....medium sized. And I'd like to have one on my back, up near my shoulder.....but I think if I got one, I'd want it to be where I could see it. So maybe not there after all?

This is why I haven't done it yet. I'm indecisive!

  • gingersoul said on Jan 27, 2008....

Future.....never had a tattoo and never wanted one...and not because of fear of the pain...

I found that extremely few tats are really artistic and not all tats are beautiful on the skin....I dont like big extensive tattoos covering arms or legs or all the shoulders....the skin looks dirty to me, like i want to scrub it away and see the real beauty underneath..........the ones i might like would barely be the size of a cent....

Plus, now everybody seems having one ..... even a girl in my daughter class had a tattoo for her b-day......a little too much .....

But since you want it......i wish you a good one.....:-)

This is the only tat that I have. It is on stomach. I would recommend losing the weight before you get it, it will be an incentive to stay fit considering your skin will stretch and distort if you gain weight back. I got Pooh because of my childhood nickname, he has bi-pride colors in her shirt, and well the wording speaks for itself.

The pain is minimal except up towards the ribs, that got pretty intense. I have a few more planned but just haven't decided on location yet.

  • D6fer said on Jan 27, 2008....
nope...no tats for me....I have been tempted...but resisted...personally i prefer skin the way it was given to us.....my wife has one...a small rose on her ankle...it's ok.....I am glad it's not bigger....my daughter got one on her shoulder blade a few weeks ago...too big IMO....a personal thing though...so to each his own.

  • rmuxagirl said on Jan 27, 2008....
well ihave three tattoos at the moment and I do want one more.

My first one was a design that I drew and for me its sgnificant because I designed I had control and it's on my lower back.

Then I got a celtic cross on my calf to represent my Irish heritage and my faith in God

then recently i got a more detailed, bigger tat on my shoulder.  It is an Irish Fearie sitting on the moon with a light green ribbon on her leg and holding a light blue one: the green one represents my cancer and the blue one represents my uncle who died of prostate cancer.

I also want a shamrock somewhere I havent decided yet.

The only one that hurt was the faeries wings because they are right on my spine.
  • FutureGoddess said on Jan 27, 2008....

Natalie:  when you really figure out what you want, then you will get it.

Batty:  Yup - just google Temporary Tats and a host of them come up, but be forewarned.  If you wear a temp tat in the summer you get a tan line in the shapeof it.  I know,I had a Grateful Dead Dancing Bear on the top part of my left boob (where it could be seen in a bathing suit) and had a dancing bear outline for weeks after the tat came off (it flakes off usually but you can remove it with baby oil)

Ginger - you are absolutely entitled to your opinion (I know you don't need me to say that) and I agree that some sleeves look a bit "muddy" as you call it.  But I love the ones that have a theme.  I am curious, how old is your daughter?  I keep seeing a young girl/teen with a tat and I think that's wrong.

LaLaLa:  I love cherry blossoms too - if you go to the Museum Store, or google pics of "Cherry Blossoms, Washington, DC, Japan" they have beautiful representations.

Vacantmind (who's mind is far from it <grin>) - I like that tattoo - interesting play on words...LOL... and yes, that's sort of the incentive for having in on my stomach - to get it rock hard and keep it that way for the rest of my life.  I don't have to worry about kids and stretch marks because I don't want any - I do have to worry about keeping weight in check.  But again, great incentive.  I used to joke that I was afraid to get a tattoo because if I got a tattoo of a rose above my boob it would turn into a long stem one by the time I was 60 LOLOL

Rmux - I understand that for some, tattooing can be a bit addictive - are you finding that?  I like the ones you have and the reasons.  Very cool.  Yeah, I heard that getting it near bone is painful...

  • lalalalalala said on Jan 27, 2008....
FG: thanks so much. most of the images that came up are ones i found before. they are beautiful. now i have 2 pics i like. maybe 2 is al i need? oh i still need to check the Museum Store!
  • vacantmind said on Jan 27, 2008....
Yes, that whole long stem rose thing kind of scared me to.  My tattoo does work as a good incentive. I want to keep it just the way it is. I plan to have no more children. Four is my limit!

While I take no issue with others inking their bodies, I would never have it done.  I have a variety of reasons, most of which I choose not to discuss at the moment.  The one over riding reason however, is that I simply have no desire to have a tattoo.

I have seen many wonderful tats on others, my children each have at least one.  I have also seen many grotesque examples of 'body art'  Perhaps it is those, more than I realise, that influence my choice.

  • FutureGoddess said on Jan 27, 2008....

Hi Ray (this is the first time I have seen you on my blog so thanks) - Cool, a jag - any particular reason or is that too personal a question.

RRW- I appreciate your opinion (and while I would never ask, I am now curious as to the other reasons why besides the fact that you have no desire - yeah, I am a bit nosy but you left that open <smile>)   As a personal opinion, I too have seen "grotesque examples of body art" - I am not a huge fan of people who pierce and pierce and pierce.  I met a guy who had more than 100 holes/piercings in his face!  It was a very "weird" and oddly nauseating thing to see.  Not a good look on anyone.

I'm 18 and I got mine on my 18th birthday. I got mine on my wrist and it's the Dove (Holy Spirit) with my two sisters initials around it. It's our sister tattoo. But I'm getting one I designed when I was 10 on my back. I've wanted tattoos since I was little. My dad has them so I always thought they were awesome. I warn you they are addicting. I'm going to be 19 in June and will probably get atleast two more before I turn 20. It did hurt but only because it was on my wrist. It usually only stings but hurts more depending on your pain intake and where you get it. Getting it on your stomach shouldn't be bad because they wont be anywhere near a bone or veins.
  • FutureGoddess said on Jan 27, 2008....

Krvs - Yike, if it's that addicting and you continue on that path by the time you are my age (I'll be 41 in a week) you will be covered from head to foot (LOL)  Pain is not my thing, but I understand women have a higher tolerance for pain.  And besides - I may decide to take a few shots of liquid painkiller before I go (I know, you aren't supposed to, but what they don't know won't hurt them...)

im a strong believer that tattoos or 'ink' cant just be off of the shop wall, it has to be original to you and mean somthing......

i have a small black heart (not filled in just outlined quite thick) on my right forearm.this is because when my engagement ended because my ex cheated (another story all together lol) my best friend told me 'i always wear my heart on my sleeve'......hence the tattoo

my other tattoo is on my foot (it hurt like hell as he caught the really thin bit on top of my foot near the bone) its a small piece of my mums tattoo that she has on her upper right arm, its a small black piece of ivy kinda pattern (my discription doesnt do it justice lol) with four turquoise stars around it......one for mum, one for dad, one for me and one for my younger brother whos no longer with us.

just make sure you have a tattoo with a meaning, that way you will never regret them x

  • krvs89 said on Jan 27, 2008....
haha. yea it seems like i'm getting a lot but after the major ones i want the only one i'm getting once i have kids are stars on my shoulder for my kids. so after my kids are here i'm done.

and you might want to be careful with the liquid pain killer. it makes your blood thinner so you'll bleed more and it might make it hurt more.

PT - Nice TAT, great poem.   About 3months ago, a raven/crow alighted on my windowsill exactly where my desk is and seemed to be staring at me.   While the initial shock was a bit much, since this was the first time in 11 years that this has happened, I managed not to cry out when I looked directly into its eyes.  I swear, it seemed to smile at me, then nod it's head, spread its wings so that all of the colors were visible, and flew away - when I looked up the symbolism of this event I came across:

As guardians through the cycle of death and rebirth, the scintillating rainbow colors in their dark wings remind us that even in the midst of darkness we have the power to touch the light.

At the time I was going through serious darkness and this just made me very happy....

I like some tattoos on women, but mostly small and hidden.  I don't have one but would like one.  But I have an inordinate fear of needles and have been telling my kids to wait .  I don't want to do something I told them to wait for.  Some day I will get one and maybe we'll do it together, my kids that is.
  • PassionTraveler said on Jan 28, 2008....
I feel the same way about Ravens FG and can add even more to that symbolism:

I'm named after the famous Lenore in Edgar Allen's Poem, The Raven, and Lenore is of Greek origins and means light. Which of course is why I identify with ravens so much as symbol for me. :) Of course the world globe in the tat, you can discern it's meaning simply from my moniker here in SC. ;) PassionTraveler!

Racerboy - the weird part of me wanting a tattoo is I have a huge fear of needles (as in injections), but I, oddly enough, do not look at the tattoo machine as a needles - yes, I know they are...

Beltrix - sorry for not acknowleging your comment earlier - I heard that the top of foot is one of the most painful spots besides the spine.
