I was just making lunch for my 7 year old son, and I learned a few new things. When I asked him what he wanted, he said a cheese sandwich. Well, I'm immediately thinking of getting out the pan and butter, so I ask him, "a toasted cheese sandwich?".

"No", he says. "A piece of cheese and bread?" asks I. "With mustard" was his reply. So he proceeded to show me the proper way of taking two slices of wheat bread, squirting on some mustard, and placing a slice of american cheese between them. That was a new one on me. So I learned there's more than one definition to the phrase 'cheese sandwich'.

Next, he told me he needed a plate with some "pretzels, chips, and short things". Well, I must admit, I was totally lost! I had a pretty good grasp of pretzels and chips, but I had no clue as to the definition of 'short things'. So we proceeded to the snack cupboard, where he pointed to a bag of Gardetto's . A lightbulb snapped on in my head. "Ahhh! Short things!" I exclaimed in glee.

Since Grace works on the weekends now, I am the primary caregiver on both Saturday and Sunday, and so the things that happen during those times of the day where she and he have worked out their own language, are not part of my vocabulary yet. But he is my son, and he is important to me. So it looks like i'm going to learn how to speak 7.

So, let me ask you, what does a cheese sandwich mean to you?

Trav, this is a lovely post :-)  Cheese sandwich to me has always meant two pieces of bread with cheese inbetween.  I think we all develop words with our kids that is specific to us.  We dont call bogies "bogies" or "snot" we call them "noennies". . .that's what my mom use to call it when I was little :-)

you know, it's amazing to me the special kind of vocabulary a kid develops w/ his (or her) parents. i think that's pretty cool, man. :>

to me a cheese sandwich means 2 slices of buttered bread and a slice of cheese in the middle.

A cheese sandwich to me is Kraft singles, mayo, and two pieces of white bread. That's how my mom always made it for me!

thanks polarcakes :-) no toasting of the bread? and yeah, to both you and silver, it's interesting how we make our own languages, isn't it?

silver - no toasting for you either?

nurse - i wondered if anyone did the mayo thing, thanks for answering that one :-)
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 26, 2008....

  • travelr712 said on Jan 26, 2008....
well, i seem to be the only one so far that does the toasting, so that would make me the wierd one silver :-)

If my girls asked for a "cheese sandwich," they'd want a cheese slice or two between two pieces of lightly buttered whole-wheat bread.  Not toasted/grilled, unless they asked for a "grilled cheese sandwich."
  • travelr712 said on Jan 26, 2008....
ahh, i forgot the necessary 'grilled' adjuctive! i'll remember that next time :-)

    LOL.  That's the little man!!

Lunch is a big deal to this kid! On Thursday I was going to fix him soup and a sandwich, but -  In his best 'let me correct your mistakes' voice  -  he informed me . . . . "Don't you know, Mom, that goldfish soup is ONLY for making me feel better?  I don't feel bad today, so I can't have that for lunch."

I asked him why goldfish soup is only for making him feel better, and he responded, "Because that's the purpose with which that was pur. . . umm. . . got. . . uhh. . .  boughten."  I didn't even correct his english, I thought it was so cute. =)

And, just FYI - the *other* kind of cheese sandwich is known to him as a "cheese toasty".

yes grace, i was informed in no uncertain terms today when i went to make him lunch that goldfish soup was ONLY for when he was sick, complete with the waving, outturned palms. he really is funny, isn't he? but i think the thing i liked best today was when we were playing a game and he did something funny and i laughed, and he said 'what are you laughing at?' i said 'you, you're funny.' he said 'yeah, i know. you are too!' GO LITTLE MAN! :-)

See a cheese sandwich for me is always two slices of cheese, a slice of tomato, mayonnaise, and white bread.

Our son regularly comes to us and says mommy can have some of "those things".

Apparently, I'm always supposed to know what "those things" are, despite the fact that sometimes "those things" can be pretzels, sometimes they can be the short things from Gardettos, and sometimes they can be Chex Mix.

I love grilled cheese sandwiches, and I especially like mine with tomato soup.

The kids at our school are always asking for them.

  • travelr712 said on Jan 27, 2008....
that was quite often on the lunch menu when i was young too cry. nothing better than a warm cheese toasty and a hot bowl of soup on a cold day, huh? :-)

Trav: No, Trav, you aren't. Sometimes they have no words for the names of what they are asking for. And sometimes there names for things are whatever word strikes their fancy.

This reminds me of mine when he was little.  He asked for a "roun" egg.  I proceeded to make him a fried egg.  He threw a mini- temper tantrum and said, "No, I want a roun egg!"  After much discussion, I figured out he wanted a hard boiled egg.  One Easter we were at a Easter egg hunt, and I lost him for a minute.  I freaked out at first, but finally found him leaning over a garbage can--peeling and eating the eggs he had found!  Thank goodness he didn't get sick.  I don't know what it was with him and hard-boiled eggs...guess he took after our dog. Ha.

Anyway, I would have thought the same as you, and made a grilled cheese.

  • travelr712 said on Jan 27, 2008....
zayda - i try whenever i can to tell him the proper word or proper pronunciation. he often asks me to do so, so i must be doing it in a nonthreatening manor. i hope so anyway.

wombie - LOL! that kid must love eggs to eat them right out of the garbage can! and another vote for grilled cheese. that's the only way i've ever thought of 'cheese sandwich' myself.

travelr712:  LOL.  No, he wasn't eating them out of the garbage can...he was leaning over it and putting the shells in the garbage.  I don't know what compelled him to be neat about it, either!
  • travelr712 said on Jan 27, 2008....
ahh, i misread! yeah, that's even more surprising! my little guy will just spill anything wherever and leave it for me or grace to clean up. well, he used to anyway, he's being taught the value of being neater by being required to clean up after himself :-)
