Some day a guy told me i walk like a princess.....he meant it as a compliment...and i know what he meant....
You see....i am short but i walk tall.

From my devastating height of 5'5' my walk carries me high....

I had this walk pretty early in age.

I think it must have come from those many long, painful and embarassing walks thru the church aisles to receive communion......all those peopl's eyes furtively glancing at whoever was walking toward God......I had felt right then that i needed to put up a good show to the world to see. And to Jesus to admire.

Also it surely must have helped my acting. For 3 years i had to make myself as much visible as i could to the audience....i had to learn how to gracefully strut on stage and mark my presence while declaiming my lines...

For one reason and more than one.......i got in exchange my walk.

I walk tall and my chin is up, my nose is pointed sligthly up too ...i walk and focus on things ahead of me...i glance around but my target is not the tips of my feet...

So, yes, i get what that guy told me....my shoulder are straight and my spine is alligned....its a natural and flowing walk but i understand why some people might also have the feeling i walk like a snobby nose-up woman too....oh well...some has to show some grace in this world, right? ...LOL...

My daughter though has her father's walk.....both have flat feet and both have long legs....he walks like what i call "a city cowboy"....he walks like his feet might crack some eggs....and like he is trying to make less noise as possible...

She walks slouching her shoulder a little and i am trying not to pester her too much with my "Shoulder up, baby. Chin up. Face the world"...

She does a lot o sports so i am trying to be confident that some day the princess in her will emerge from her teen ager pupa and start walking in the world....:-)

So now i am curious ......how is your walk? Is a natural one or you had to change something? Do you feel you walk like you are?

Psst: LF...... i am pretty sure you wil comment that you walk with your two legs, you stinker...lol....

Not only is that good looking, it is very healthy.

I don't think my walk represents my personality. I slouch too much. I have to consciously remind myself to stand tall.

  • silverwhisper said on Jan 26, 2008....
my walk is about 2 things: 1) speed and 2) comfort. i've worked in manhattan, and this means that my walk, always fast by anyone's standards, has simply become faster. the average person walks @ 3 mph. i've clocked it, my walk is around 4 mph.

and i have to say, i've always had a sense that you walked that way, GS. :>

I always walk tall. I'm not really that tall, but I act like I am. I walk fairly slowly though. It's more of a saunter than anything else. Unless I'm in a huge hurry.

But I never look at the ground. I always look ahead of me. Of course this is how I tripped and fell into a door. It would be smart of me to look at the ground once in awhile.

Ginger, one thing that I can thank my father for (and at the time I hated him) is that as a teenager he was CONSTANTLY telling me "Chin up, shoulders back" - - - All the time!!  It drove me so insane that I would just walk like that so he wouldn't say it to me and then it became habit.  I have also been told that I have good posture.  I can walk pretty fast for short legs because I stride and I actually quite enjoy it :-)

  • gingersoul said on Jan 26, 2008....

Pepper......you are right.....very healthy.....plus, i feel as everything is nicely pulled up too....lol.....interesting you say your walk doesnt represent you.....

In a way i do think we are how we walk or we choose to walk....its a way to show ourself to the others' eyes.....many times we come from the distance and the unknown and people see our walk way before our eyes or smile...

I know you have a prince inside you...:-)

  • gingersoul said on Jan 26, 2008....

    Ed.......thank you, my friend......wow......you are fast.....lol...

I am a fast walker too....i constantly hear people telling me "Slow down, wait for me, where are you running to"?

I have perfectioned in Roma the same swirling walk you have in Manhattan....but....did you fast speed walk away from men like i did?....LOL....

My dog now is my competitive companion...he naturally beats me any time and i have to say he made me gain even more speed...:-)

Boxy......yes, i read it in your post about that elegant fall against the door.....lol...

I am not (strangely) clumsy when i walk.....i dont trip that often...or bump in stuff....i tend to do the stairs quickly though...and sometime i trip but only ascending them...never descending them....dont know why...

I know what you mean about walking slow as a saunter......i have a friend of mine who is impossibly slow when he walks...he says he does it on pupose to show the world to take it easy....lol.....cool cucumber you two are.......:-D

Ed.......i have been in Manhattan only 4 times in my whole life.....and i loved it....but, hey, i was the tourist....i know how frustrating might be sometimes living or working there....i remember this rush that would attack the people's legs.....an invisible current that was pulling everybody ahead, ahed...walking fast somewhere.....away from the point they had started to walk ...

Curious...which neighborhood were you lazily strolling in?

And about the look.......you must remember some Italian men are known for doing more than simply look sometimes.....ever been pulled from the arm by a perfect stranger while walking?.....lol....

  • silverwhisper said on Jan 26, 2008....
GS: i used to work around the fashion district, so use your imagination. :>

do more than simply look? there's no nice way to explain my response to that. let's chalk that up to cultural differences and move on. :>

  • wakingharmony said on Jan 26, 2008....
Ginger I have noticed that many Italians walk "Tall"   A lot of cultures take pride in the walk it says something about your upbringing and how you feel about your self. I used to walk (as a young girl ) shoulders hunched forward.....that was because  I had developed earlier than most and was a bigger size (cup) and was told by a few jealous girls (didn't know  that at time) that if I walked so straight that , that was all the guys would want me for......  So Mommies if you see your girls a bit bashful about growing bosoms  tell them to be proud and dont listen to flat chested girls!
  • gingersoul said on Jan 26, 2008....

Margaret...nice inpt....yes, i am aware that part of my daughter's slouchness is due to her new flowering situation .....she luckily is not big...well proportionated, actually....i was on a pretty full side when i was a teenager ....and yes, i do remember of having been slouching in certain occasions...

One of my friends had the same problem of yours....she had developep an instictual defensive walk ...a learned one....when we are little girls we walk and move like boys...then our body trick us....she is a size D and has been wishing by years to have a breast reduction....she never walked tall and proud for fear of other girl's jealousy and of attracting too many men looks...

Ed...oh , leave it there then....;-)

When I was little, my Nana always said I walked gracefully - had a "regal bearing" - but that got lost somewhere, and I walked with my head down for a long time. I also rushed everywhere. Somewhere in college I found that grace again, or some semblance of it. I still get accused of speed walking when I'm not with my kids (at roughly 5'8" I don't have short legs), but when I'm not rushed, I walk with my head up and a light rocking step. A book would stay on my head.

Short?! Ginger you are positively statuesque compared to my measly 5'2".

I walk very fast. I have no idea how fast but other adults quite often complain if they are walking with me. I had years of having to get from a to b on foot with them being quite a distance apart and little time to do it so speed was essential.

ed HTH did you find out how fast you walked?

  • beyondtheveil said on Jan 26, 2008....
ginsoul- First of all, like Ed, I never imagined you walking any other way.

Until I was in my thirties, I walked slow, somewhat slouched, and eyes looking a lot at the ground. I had this "let the world go by, who cares, walk through life your own way"  feeling. I walk faster now, looking around. I think my work slowly took it out of me.

I met a woman from LA at a restaurant counter long ago. When she got up to leave, she placed her hand on my shoulder and said "walk slow". I should have listened to her. It fits my personality better, gives me more time to feel life.

    But that's just me.
  • Lucytorial said on Jan 26, 2008....
Interesting, some days I have "I feel really tall days" others I feel a little short, I'm 5"8 so I'm not short or tall just average.

My shoulders are always straight, collar bones dead straight, head level, hips... well from my own dance and modeling past they swing, loosely the only odd thing about my walk is that I have this definite heel toe thing, not in high heels but in flats heel toe its really obvious!

  • Twylarants said on Jan 26, 2008....
I'm only 5' 41/2', but my legs are long, so I cover a lot of ground quickly. I walk defensively, or so I've been told.  I guess it's from living in areas where you have to watch out for yourself, never look down, and be aware of your surroundings.
Anyway, if I have to walk, I want to get where I'm going as quickly as possible so I can sit down!

hi sweetheart. i walk more like your daughter than like you. i walk slow most of the time, and look very casual. sometimes with my hands in my pockets. i wear sneakers and can't be heard, so lots of times anyone in the office is likely to almost bump into me if going around a corner. they can't hear me there, but i hear them. everyone is always saying Excuse Me to me, thinking they almost knocked me over, but i'm very alert to people with a kind of martial artist's awareness of where people are, and nobody can accidentally bump into me cause i'm too alert for that, i know who is where. i'm the opposite of you, and walk very modestly.

i read a book called The Real McCoy, and there's a beautiful girl in it who walks very heavy, not like you, but very noisy. She makes a racket when she walks. She puts all her weight into her steps. She is an actress. Her nickname is The Elephant of the Proscenium. There's a girl at work exactly like her, very pretty, and sounds like an elephant approaching.

Now I think my walk is as much like a man who constantly prowls the scene for friends and friendly women. My eyes are always open, always looking, and my smile is only there for those who know to see it. I'm not a tall man, but I see high.

It's always a treat to "run into you" on a Saturday night as well, ginger. But back to the topic at hand: the way we walk tells a lot about us. Think of all the tall women whose walk is hunched over in an effort to seem shorter, more petite. I'm also reminded of a story that Matt Damon told when he was interviewed for Inside the Actor's Studio.  His director suggested that he take a few months of boxing lessons before the start of filming on the first Bourne movie. He said it was because there was something subtly powerful in the way that boxers walk and he wanted his character to show that subtle strength on film.
  • Zayda said on Jan 27, 2008....
I'm just over 5'8" but not quite 5'9", so not short or tall, just average. But I walk tall rather like you do. Head up, shoulders back with a little sashay in there from all those years of dance.

My walk changes a bit in front of a classroom; I'm still walking tall but the sashay decidedly gets removed.

The only times I walk with my head down even slightly is when the university doesn't get around to quickly scraping the sidewalks or the parking lots here (They take FOREVER!) and I'm watching for ice.

But I can't walk with my head completely down with throngs of students milling about and rushing to So, it's more of a head up and the occasional glance down to try to avoid as much ice as possible and not wipe out. So far I've been lucky and not landed on my ice on the ice. [knocks on wood]

Do men walk their dick tall too?

Meaning......are you aware of a different way you or you fellow males walk to show off better your attributes....just curious here....*giggling*

  • lioneljay said on Jan 27, 2008....

ginger -- i can imagine you walking like a princess. when can we expect a sample on youtube? i already uploaded a short video of my tapping feet, for starters. sorry, but beat you to it, didn't i? lol.

my own walking style is a brisk one composed of long strides, like someone on a forced march or a combat maneuver. i guess i got it from my boyscout days, followed by two years as military cadet, to name a few... i mentioned this in a blog some months back.

but i make some adjustments in walking style when i'm in the highlands, where brisk walking and long strides are not always practical. what i described as the mountain gait is described in another, more recent blog.

I bounce - big time. My kid pointed it out to me last week, most recently. But as far back as grade school there have been comments on my "bounce."

"Dad, you bounce when you walk! No, really! BIG!"

It figures mOOn... you are a bouncy! kind of person.... boing boing....

Actually I understand this, my husband always says to me "why do your hips move so much?"

Aghh maybe its because I have an odd, disjointed and relaxed walk?? makes me sway.

MoonPlat......yeah....i get your walk.......i can see it .....i like it....:-)

Lucy.....oh, i understand....my ex used to tell me the same thing, grinning in a very sexy way between being pride and a tad jealous ......."Do you have to skake your ass like that when you walk ?".....and i used to answer to him 'Its not my fault. They designed me in this way" ...like Jessica Rabbit in the movie...lol....
