Sleeplessness is usually associated with emotional or mental tension,anxiety,depression,work problems,financial stress or unsatisfactory sex life.Any illness that causes pain or discomfort may also cause sleeplessness.Sleep patterns also change in old age.Lots of things go wrong if you don't sleep properly.It could be a faster aging process or it chould be an immune system gone haywire!If sleeplessness persists for more than two weeks,consult a doctor.But before that,instead of popping sedatives,follow these homely tips to get a better and quicker shut-eye:
1) Reduce stimulant (tea,coffee,alcohol and cigarettes) intake,especially before bedtime.
2) Get regular exercise,but avoid strenuous exercise two hours prior to bedtime.It may wake up your body!
3) Avoid day-time napping.
4) Don't eat a heavy meal just before bedtime.Have a small carbohydrate snack.
5) Take a hot bath before bedtime.
6) Stop watching TV at least an hour before bedtime.
7) Make the bedroom slightly cooler than other rooms.
8) Use the bedroom only for sleep.
9) Go to bed and wake up at the same time.A routine helps.
10) Don't focus on your worries before bedtime.If you can't go to sleep after 30 minutes,get up and involve yourself in a relaxing activity.
11) Clear your mind;don't use this time to solve your daily problems.
