They call them “progressive lenses” now…well, la dee frigin’ da!

They’re trifocals, people! And I got ‘em!  Poor, poor Twyla…it’s so sad…

my vision is 40/110 with an astigmatism.  Otherwise, everything is fine, thank you Eyeball Gods, whoever you are.

No retina damage from the diabetes, no glaucoma, no extra blood vessels growing…just lousy vision. Although the optometrist did ask me how long ago the head trauma happened.  What head trauma?

I had to think about that for a minute.

Was it the time I wallpapered my kitchen with that horrible flowered 70s Partridge Family-type pattern?  I was vacuuming and smashed my head into the corner of the chimney because it blended into the rest of the wall so well I couldn’t see it.

I was hit by drunk drivers a couple of times, but no head injuries there.

Could it be when I was 12 and my sister pushed me down a flight of stairs because I wouldn’t turn the light out?

Bingo!  I have old pigment in the back of my eye from a head injury.

I knew I didn’t like my sister for a reason!

Anyways…now I’m trying to get used to these Mr. Magoo glasses.  The Lenscrafter saleswoman assured me it would only take a week, but I’m not so sure.

Anybody have words of wisdom, hints, tricks…anything to help me?

I can see far by looking through the top of the lenses, close through the bottom, although looking to the side makes me seasick…but the middle is rough.

I can’t see the computer screen through any part of the glasses.

Reading a sentence here is a problem, I can see the middle words, but the beginning and end of the sentence is blurry.

Help! These glasses cost a ton of money and I’m supposed to wear them to drive! I dunno about that.

Twyla - I just had this conversation with my Twin Sister.  She called me, upset because the eyedoctor has told her she now has to wear glasses much of the day (driving and reading).  While I feel bad that she (and you) have to go through this, there are people (like myself) who have been wearing glasses since they were 7 years old!!!

Seriously, it's a good thing! Now you won't get headaches looking at the computer/books and you won't get into an accident driving.  And you will get used to them if you wear them enough

Besides - I have been told by many guys that glasses are sexy in the naughty librarian type of way.....

Trifocals you say! I wouldn't worry so much, I've inherited my mother's vision (along with her 'turn a person to stone' eyes) ~hey looky how many symboly things I used in one beautiful run-on sentence~ so...happy... ok wait there was a point... oooh look... shiiiiiny... c'mon man pull it together... ok well the train pulled outta the station on this one...in summation... glasses are your friend.

hey twyla, no worries, i bet my eyes are even worse than yours. Mr Magoo, too funny!! I wear contacts and i drive with them and am good in meetings etc. but I can barely read with them, so I need to get glasses to go with my contacts! My glasses that i  have are so strong that i can practically see into the future with them! But they are good for reading and I usually use them for blogging as well as reading. At least all the other stuff is fine! I laughed my head off about your wallpaper!! hehehehehe

My mom wears trifocals, and it took her some time (more than a week) to get used to them, mostly because she sits at a computer all day for work.  Even though her eye doc said it would be easy for her to adjust, she had trouble figuring out which part of her glasses to use.

I have nothing to offer but my sympathy, really.

Knoockle....lol...hey, i have the same Medusa look.....i can turn anybody in a stone with just one look....

Twyla....i should go to the eye doctor too....but the idea on spending money and being said i need glasses keep me away from them like the plague ....i am still good ....but its getting difficult reading the small prints....

but after all..i never read the instructions of anythng....lol...

twyla, i've been wearing non-progressive (conservative?) glasses since i was 6. my mother began wearing bifocals a few years ago. i understand that it's an adjustment, and it took her a few days. with one more "level", i suppose a week or so would seem reasonable.

i just hope you make the adjustment quickly!

JerseyGoddess~ Hey girl! How are ya? Your poor twinny...I feel for her...although I don't mind the look at all.  I picked out purple frames, they're very cool looking!  The only thing I said was "no bling on my glasses, I don't do bling!"  Strangers in the eye place were telling me how good I looked in glasses so that was a good thing.
I wore glasses when I was in grade school too, but in those days they were horn
rimmed with rhinestones on them....all they needed was one of those gold chains hanging off the ear pieces and I would have looked like a very short 80 year old!

Hi MissMamie! I switch to my reading glasses for the computer...otherwise I have to sit with my face 6 inches away because I can't find the middle level on the stupid things. When I was trying them on in the store I looked in the mirror and saw, for the first time, that a small section of my gray hair was yellow...aahh!  I reached up to touch it, and a hair hell out...double aahh!  My husband and the two opticians cracked up!  My husband said "Hon, you swooped down like a ninja to grab that hair back!"  The indignity!  Trifocals and hair loss!  Good God what's next?  Girl, this gettin' old stuff ain't for sissies!  And to think I used to laugh at Mr. Magoo...

Knoockle~ You sound like a member of Pickersplock's scrambled name club...you're not related to her by some chance, are you?
Yes, the glasses and I will become friends at some point, I suppose. But I'd be a lot more inclined to love them if they hadn't cost so much money!  I dread telling the kids their inheritance is now in a small, hard case in my purse.

Eilan~ Oh, your poor Mom!  I give her a lot of credit for figuring it out. I can't find that middle level no matter how hard I try.  My neck is cracking from all the gyrations, and I swear my hearing is getting worse from not being able to see!
More than a week you say?  Oh no...

Ed ~  I love being headache free, and not squinting has it's benefits in that my crow's feet aren't as noticeable.  I'm bringing my reading glasses to work today so I can switch off.  I figure I'll wear one pair on my face and the other pair on top of my head.  Yeah...that won't look crazy!

Hey Gingersnap!  I'll tell you what the doctor told me...she said I ruined my eyes by not keeping up with my eye exams over the last ten years. If I had worn a stronger prescription when I needed it, I probably wouldn't need trifocals for many more years.  So go! There are really beautiful frames now, not like years ago. The fine print gets smaller and smaller....get glasses girl!

Seriosuly...now that i have a vision coverage in my new insurance i really have to.......thanks, lady...:-)

heya twirleypants. i'm still in the bifocul stage myself, and i don't really know that much about the subject, but is lasik an option for you?
  • Twylarants said on Jan 26, 2008....
Trav! It's good to see you... or it would be if I could see!
I don't know about lasik for my eyes...the doctor didn't bring it up.  But, as squeamish as I am, I don't think I'd explore that option.  Ewww! I have a difficult time putting make-up on my eyes...I can't imagine letting someone laser my eyeballs.  Yicchh, now I made myself sick.
  • travelr712 said on Jan 26, 2008....

yeah, well, if it's gonna affect you like that, then you should probably stick with glasses. i sure wish i had the money to do lasik tho, i'd love to be able to live without them!

Hello dear Skald...thanks for coming to visit!  I just came from Moon's post about leaving an "I was here" comment on someone's post, and here you are telling me you were here!  That's so cute!  I'm just happy to know that you were here.

  • Twylarants said on Jan 27, 2008....
Queenie~ You should have seen me in work yesterday...my first day with the trifocals.  As soon as I saw my boss, I said "Don't even think about drug testing me, I am not drunk or stoned or anything, I have new glasses and they're making me sea-sick!"  Last year he pulled a random drug test on me because a pinched nerve in my neck was causing me to walk funny, even after I brought a note from my doctor and had an MRI to diagnose it.   I told him that my test would come up perfectly clean unless M&Ms have been added to the list of controlled substances.  He didn't think that was funny.  What a dork!!

It's slightly better today...I guess I'm getting used to the glasses.
I don't know how smart I look in them, but other people look a lot less blurry now!
  • queenparanoia said on Jan 28, 2008....
hahahah your boss is funny!!! can't you change the frame of your glasses? find some that makes you look smart and sexy. lol... =)
