I have been here a couple of days, but hadn't decided what I wanted to post about.
I still don't know what would be interesting to share, so I guess I will start out by telling
You a little about me.  My parents run a small cafe in a small town in the Midwest and
I help keep the books, and some times I fill in if they need me in the cafe.

I don't have any formal training where it comes to bookkeeping, but my parents did
send me to H& R Block a couple years ago and I took their course they offer.  I did
graduate from High School, but did not advance further than that.

Growing up, I had some health problems and found it difficult to keep up with my
studies, so I was happy with just accomplishing high school, but I am taking some online
courses, and when I pass that, I will be able to drive the 12 miles to the nearby college.
I would like to teach children, pre-school, I hope.

Everyone knows
everyone else in our little town of 2,800 people.  We are just like one big happy
family.

We have our regulars who come into the cafe everyday, but my favorite time is
spent around the coffee table.   We have this hand made round table, where coffee
drinkers gather every morning and every afternoon, and we share stories and laugh,
and yes we gossip, but not maliciously, just keep up on small town gossip.

I like my little town, and I like our little cafe.  We live about 12 miles from a town of about
35,000, and a lot of us go into that town on weekends.  We go in and get what we need
for our cafe about twice a week or more, depending on our needs.

I am getting ready to go to college, so then I will only be working part time in the cafe.

I think this is pretty 'cool'.

I lived in Tok,Alaska for five years and help run a truck stop up there, and we had our own round coffee table, and that is exactly what we did too.
    Drank coffee and gossiped!

My favorite time is around the coffee table too- in fact, I don't even need a table so long as I have the coffee.

    Welcome to SC.

Welcome to SC, candylane.  I'm from a small town, too.  I liked knowing everybody, but I hated that people sometimes knew my business whether I liked it or not.

Welcome to Soulcast, Candylane.  Your little town sounds a lot like Soulcast..that's basically what we do, sit around the table talking and drinking coffee.

Candy...my dream is to run a bed and breakfats in Tuscany, Italy..in a small town on top of some hills facing the Mediterranean......a coffee bar would be a must ...would you like to join me?...:-)

Your description reminded me of a great tv serie "Northern Exposure" where the coffee bar was the central point of that little town......just cool.....plus i am a coffee addicted...hope you can reserve a chair for me at your table...

One good thing about your parents owning a business is that you have a ready-made source of income along with lots of job security. As long as you get along with your parents, seems like a great situation. I would have liked to work for my parents too but they didn't own a business. I don't think you need any particular training to be a good bookkeeper. You just need to keep careful records and know your way around a calculator or an Excel program. I'm in a numbers oriented business too, keeping track of things and making them add up. I do pension plan administration. I have to keep track of the money in all the pension plans, and who is entitled to what.
