ian o'connor, over on foxsports, suggests that the giants, not the dallas cowboys, are now "america's team".

Ed- America's team was coined by Bob Ryan thirty years ago.

They have the largest fan base in the country.

They are the most successful team in the modern era (since 1960).

They hold the record for most consecutive sellout games- 160. That's 81 away and 79 at home.

Then there are by far the most popular cheerleaders in the world.

If another deserves it more, I'd like to know who it is and why.

I don't have a hatred for any team. I usually choose geographically. For instance, I want the West to beat the East, the South to beat the North. I can also have a favorite by who is most exciting. Historically, my favorite college football teams have been Oklahoma and Nebraska for this reason.

    But I don't understand hating a team.

beyond: then bob ryan was obviously engaged in the most appalling case of fanboyism ever witnessed. b/c no matter the team, that's a claim that nobody should ever try to makee b/c the other (now 31) teams in the league are...whose team, then? lithuania's?!

mamie: thank you! i have a friend (a dallas fan) who told me that b/c of a pats' fans comments, he's now a giants fan. :D

I've liked the Cowboys since I was a kid and see no reason to stop liking them. I don't "hate" any other team. I'd just like Dallas to win. That other people seem to hate Dallas is testimony against them, not Dallas.

While America's Team might indeed be a misnomer, what the hell are the Giants??? They haven't played in New York in well over twenty years. They play in New Jersey and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. They should quit misrepresenting themselves and change their name to the Jersey Giants.

This is one Superbowl where I'm yet again not taking sides.

    I hope both teams lose.

curmudgeon: honestly, i agree with you on that. both the jets and giants should re-name themselves, if you ask me. :>

Ed- In the end, you're right. Personally, I've never used the term not only with teams, but with other things its used for such as dogs. I credit Woody Hayes for what I think is sincere hatred of Ohio State for Michigan. Rivalry is one thing, hatred is another. His story is one never to be copied in my opinion.

Tom Landry was also referred to several times as "America's coach". I don't know what that is either, but he probably deserved it more than any other.

If there was anything Landry never taught, it was hatred.

beyond: tom landry was a class act, no question, and i put him right up there w/ lombardi in terms of impact and legacy. he was one for the ages, no doubt.

This quote from the article especially caught my eye:
"Belichick is the Darth Vader of this Super Bowl."
Never thought of it that way.

That aside, I think it's pretty apt that the Giants are now being called America's team. It fits that whole root-for-the-underdog spirit we see in sports.
