there's an announcement on his campaign site.

my questions: why not stick it out until super tuesday? did someone maybe offer him a VP slot?

i know a lot of people who were big on thompson but are left feeling the best candidate has left the field.

Thompson was my guy (choice).  This is the SECOND time he's run for nomination, and backed down.  I don't get why.  IMO, he ran out of money.  It's disappointing, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

I have heard that he may be intending to support John McCain, and feels he would be more useful to the party in that way.  But honestly, I don't follow the Republican party all that closely, so I could very well be wrong.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 23, 2008....
grace: once i realized he was becoming adversarial with the press, i knew it was over for him. but he seemed less slick than the others--esp mitt romney. so who are you backing now?

mimi: oboy...mccain is toast, AFAICT, but who knows, maybe they can become a viable alternative to the golden boy romney or the would-be theocrat, mike huckabee.

I just don't think Thompson wanted it badly enough.  He was late entering the race and has now pulled out early.  I think he could have had stronger appeal if he had applied himself more.  But, I'm no political analyst.  :-)

Ed -  I dunno. I have to re-research now, and decide.  I know it *won't* be Huckabee, or Clinton.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 23, 2008....
CW: that's entirely possible...he did seem to dither before jumping in, i agree.

grace: i don't see anybody taking huckabee seriously, myself. :>

Heh. Now I don't know who I'm going to vote for either. I might even skip the Presidential primary altogether -- or switch parties temporarily so I can vote in the Democratic primary.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 23, 2008....
gee TS, not interested in voting for a theocrat-wannabe? :D

You know, I need to ask certain someones what the big problem is with McCain.

I took one of those online tests a few weeks ago and it paired me with Giuliani. But people's comments that he's an authoritarian kinda bugged me.

I'll not vote for Huckabee not only because of his overreliance on his religion but also some of his policies are out there in left field.

I guess I don't know enough about Romney.

The only two things about McCain that kinda bother me are the McCain-Feingold finance reform bill, and I guess that McCain was also involved in the S&L scandal back in the '80s. Oh, and while I don't have a problem with age exactly I'm not entirely comfortable with the fact that he's already past 70.

I guess I need to look some more. Oregon's primary isn't until the middle of May, anyway, and everything may already be decided by then.

  • silverwhisper said on Jan 23, 2008....
TS: mccain knuckled under re: torture. depending upon your feeling about feingold-mccain, i could see opposing him there but he completely sold out to the would-be theocrats of social conservatism this time around, whereas he kept a healthy and sane distance from them in the past.

Before he entered the race, he was asked several times if he was going to announce his candidacy. He replied that if didn't feel like there seemed to be any great candidates but he wanted to give them a chance to see what they could do before he entered. He essentially said at the time that he would enter if he didn't feel like there was at least one candidate that could really lead the Republican party. So he waited and entered late.

Because he said those things, it kind of makes me wonder if he still feels the same way about the other candidates and if he really will support another candidate. He hasn't announced that he is backing another candidate yet, which to many is rather surprising.

I'm not sure why he didn't stick it out until Super Tuesday. It seems like that would have given him more of a feel for his possibilities.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 24, 2008....
super z: yeah, i'm very surprised he shut down before super tuesday, myself. he seems to have a good amount of grassroots support, and that would have manifested then, i would think. could it have been a lack of money?

excellent point about his pre-campaign comments--i'd quite forgotten them.

Oh, rats.  For a second there I thought you had meant he came out of the closet.

btw, dennis kucinich dropped out of the democratic race. and he has been reported as saying he will not endorse another candidate.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 25, 2008....
i'm surprised it's taken him this long. i guess bringing the articles of impeachment against bush didn't sit well w/ voters. that's a damned shame.

  • GracefullyGrowing said on Jan 25, 2008....
I most certainly agree with your last comment, Ed.  That is indeed a damn shame.  How nauseating that we impeach Clinton for lying (about his sex life, of all things) and let the war monger get away with murder.  BLECH!!

utterly ridiculous, and it says more about those members of republican-controlled congress at the time than it does anything else.

  • Zayda said on Jan 25, 2008....
Kucinich was, IMO, one of the better candidates. The problem is, he doesn't play the game. He's very plain talking and says what he means. And recognition factor was working against him.

If he were a bigger name, the decision to not support another candidate would be a bigger statement I think.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 25, 2008....
to be honest, i just never knew much about kucinich. more's the pity, that and publicly questioning bush's sanity were to me pretty damned ballsy.

  • Zayda said on Jan 25, 2008....
Well, Ed, despite the fact that he dropped out of the Presidential race, perhaps you should learn a bit more about Kucinich. And yes, publically questioning Bush's sanity was probably pretty damn ballsy, but I think it hurt Kucinich more than it came across as ballsy.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 25, 2008....
maybe it hurt him, i don't know. i do know that he was just saying aloud what many of us have been thinking for a long time.

i suppose i should at some point before his campaign site goes away, huh?

  • TinSoldier said on Jan 25, 2008....
ed, can you explain better what you said about McCain above? About the knuckling under regarding torture and the selling out to the theocrats?

Maybe some kind of link or background info? I'll do some of my own research but especially the torture thing surprises me. Especially since McCain was the sponsor of the anti-torture bill that Bush vetoed.

  • TinSoldier said on Jan 25, 2008....
Nevermind... I was just perusing his site. Too much...

Too much of more of the same ol' same ol'.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 26, 2008....
TS: in previous campaigns, mccain kept the theocrats and their money at arm's length but this time around, he's trying to cozy up to 'em. huckabee's emergence however, combined w/ his own at best neutral relationship w/ 'em in the past, has led to no one really knowing how much he's really indebted to anyone.

and bloc has posted several items about mccain not ruling out torture on the campaign trail, IIRC. indeed, IIRC the only candidates who steadfastly ruled it out were obama and huckabee.

    ed
  • TinSoldier said on Jan 26, 2008....
ed, can you link that please? Especially about the torture thing?

Anyway, due to posts in this blog I was checking out Kucinich's site. He had one of those tests linked.

Apparently I should vote for Richardson, McCain, Paul, or Kucinich in that order. Skipping the others, Romney was at the bottom of the list with a score of -20.

Anyway, I know that I won't agree 100% with any candidate's views. I just wish that I could feel more strongly about any one of them, from either party.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 27, 2008....
TS: i'm looking for 'em--it's on bloc's pages somewhere. now all i gotta do is sort through the torture-tagged posts...

    this might take a while.
