Last night it snowed very lightly, and with the wind blowing and the snow melting and then refreezing on the roads we awoke to black ice this morning.

The snow tapered off for awhile, but the wind has progressively picked up through the late morning and early afternoon. And it's started snowing again.

So we have more snow, which isn't so bad. But this wind just makes things oh so cold. I'm sitting here at home listening to the windows in our office rattle from the wind gusts. When I returned from teaching class about 15 minutes ago, I stood outside for a bit listening to the wind gusting and the branches in the trees above the house creaking and groaning from the strain of the wind. It's quite a sound. But I couldn't take the cold for long.

So, now I'm ensconced in the house trying to determine what I want for lunch. I'm thinking something warm and steamy to help knock off the chill from being out in that wind.

Well, it's not as cold as it was on Sunday, thank goodness. And it's a bit better than it was yesterday as well. Although, it wasn't snowing yesterday.

I didn't have any problems with the black ice as my commute to work isn't during rush hour as I don't have to teach until after 10 a.m. So, most of the black ice had melted off.

I had to contend with blowing snow on the way back home, which made visibility really low in a couple of places where there are nothing but bare corn fields on either side of the interstate for a couple of miles. There's not barrier there to keep the wind from blowing thin layers of snow across the road. But worse, is that you have all this swirling blowing snow that cuts down on visibility considerably.

I'm having a tuna melt for lunch, so I don't think hot chocolate would really go with that. I may have a nice mug of hot chocolate or tea later this afternoon though. :)

    Bah, it's cold here too,
and windy, an icy wind that freezes your veins!

zayda- I feel quite blessed to live in an area with mild winters. During this cold siege I've actually had to wear a jacket except for yesterday. I sat outside with the dogs last night and drank coffee. I'm definitely not a snowbird.

    What is black ice?

It's cold here too, and snowing! And icy... or so I've heard. I'm being smart and staying inside where it is nice and warm. If you happen to make hot chocolate later, may I have a cup? :-)

And we had very bad wind last night. Rain and gale. Once again people were warned not to be outside and rescue teams were in action. Thaw and floods. Well crazy weather every where.

Cold here, too!  Today is better, even though the wind is what is so terrible too.  The other night I went out on the deck to smoke and shovel a little, then thought I was locked out. Ice had melted from the roof and frozen onto the latch just in the short time I was outside!  I had to bang on the door and get hubby up to let me in, and he's asking me, "Why the blank did you lock the glass door?"

I'm smoking inside when no one is home......!

    Stay warm wherever you are!

My girls didn't have school today.  I'm a little bit annoyed about this.  I checked the local TV stations at 7:15 and no school closings whatsoever came up on the bottom of the screen.  Then shortly after 8:00, when the bus didn't arrive, I checked again and the TV stations were suddenly showing school closings.

Sure, there was a dusting of snow, but geez.  Even for this area, where we're never prepared for snow, it was a dusting.  Now my girls are likely going to have a shortened spring break because they've used their calamity days.

Eilan--Schools were just delayed here. They won't shorten spring break here; instead they will simply extend the school year.
  • Eilan said on Jan 22, 2008....
Zayda: Extending the school year is also an option here as well.  Last year the district shortened spring break and added days to the end of the year.

Today, the snow was melted by what would have been the end of the school day.

Eilan--Hmmm...maybe they do shorten spring break here. I don't remember them doing it last year though. They did extend the school year by almost a week though.

MM&I: I hope you are staying warm. :)

After a false alarm on Monday, we finally got snow here in Saitama, Japan. But I have to wait until Sunday before I can go out and take pictures in the mountains. It has turned to rain already in the city. I don't expect much around here. My apartment just cools to 5 degrees Celcius and that's as exciting as it gets usually. I wouldn't mind a little more white around here.

But yes, I did have a hot lunch today: a toasted roll with honey, hot noodles, and toaster oven french fries.
