And it's cold outside!

Does anybody else remember that old Sesame Street clip?  the one of the Inuit girl getting all decked out to go outside?  That was totally me today.

I am pretty hardy in the cold.  Normally I wear my winter clothes for less of the year than even seasoned Quebeckers!  But today even I was layering up.  The temperature outside right now is -21C (-6F).  With windchill, -34C (-30F!)  This isn't the only bitterly cold day we've had this winter, but it's cold enough!  When Canadian weather services are issuing alerts for low temperatures, you know it's cold!

On a normal winter day, I wear jeans, t-shirt, and socks, winter jacket, hat, boots and cheap knit gloves.  But this is me today, getting dressed to go out for a 40-minute (round trip) walk to the store:

Regular socks.  Then knee-high socks on top of that.

Pjyama pants, with the back hem pinned up so as not to show under my jeans or drag on the ground.  Then my jeans on top of that.

T-shirt.  Then zip-up hoodie jacket, otherwise known as my "fall/spring/house jacket."

Boots.  iPod in front right jeans pocket so that I still reach it to skip songs but the cord is protected under my jacket.

My big winter jacket.  I love this thing.  It's down-filled, has two zippers (to block the wind better) and cuffs with thumb holes so you can put your gloves on over top and keep cold air and snow from going down your wrists.

Toque next.  Then pull up hoodie hood over toque (the hood to my winter jacket blows off if there's any wind, making it pretty much useless in this town!).  Pull drawstrings tight.

Cheapo knit gloves, followed by hunky Thinsulate gloves.  I hate wearing gloves or mittens but I hate having cold hands more.

Then scarf.  My neck is fine since my jacket zips up to the chin, so instead I use my scarf to cover the lower half of my face.  This thing is longer than I am tall so it wraps around twice.  I can't put it as high up on my face as I'd like, though, because it fogs my glasses.

Then my backpack to stick my groceries in and I was out the door!

I looked like a dweeb and I felt like the Michelin man.  But even in all those layers, I wasn't exactly breaking a sweat!  So it would've been pretty painful without them.  I was a little surprised - I wasn't the only one out and about today.  But I was the only person decked out to the gills like that.  Then again, I figure those other people probably weren't walking all the way to the grocery store and back!

All I could think about when I read this was a scene from that old movie A Christmas Story, where the guys little brother was bundled up so thickly that he was hobbling down the road unable to move his arms. And then he'd periodically tip over and not be able to get back up again!

I am so, so glad I don't live in a place that gets that cold! I'd die. When it drops down to 45F here, it feels like we're going to freeze to death. I can't even imagine -30F! I'm so spoiled.

Yeah, I kind of felt like that.  I couldn't bend anything, dude, except maybe my knees.  I guess it's a good thing I didn't have to stop and tie my shoes along the way!

Thankfully DH got a ride home today.  His office is 40-50 minutes from here and there are some stretches, where there is nothing but parking lot between you and the waterfront, that are pretty brutal.  I always walk to meet him halfway, to keep him company.  And I would've gone today if he hadn't gotten a ride.  But I'm really glad he did, for both our sakes!

What really cinches it is that in the summer we can have temperatures in the mid 30's (95F) and higher!  Except here most of the buildings aren't designed for that kind of heat - no thought to exposures or air circulation, and no ceiling fans!  Only newer buildings and houses have central air, either.  It's funny; I'm from a Southern family, but I would so rather face -30 than +30 (ideally, of course, I'd prefer neither - my favorite months of the year are April and October!).

Ok, the South Park reference is cracking me up. Darn you, ed! :-D

We dressed sort of like that in Germany, and it sure is a far cry from walking out in a t-shirt in January and wondering if you should've worn a tank top instead.

I'm with you on the weather - better cold than scorching, but holy cow that's cold! Stay warm, nyt!

Haha yeah, I could never quite get over how warm the winter months were down south.  I couldn't really stand it, either.  My parents and grandparents have both lived in colder places than they do now, and I think they're a little jealous of all my winter weather!  And I am happy as a clam, assuming clams enjoy being snowed in as much as I do.  Probably they don't.  Doesn't seem like a clam thing.

In any case, I will definitely be staying warm!  I don't have to go out again for a few more days (but if it warms up I will be heading out for my usual exercise anyway).  And right now I am heading off now to snuggle with my own personal space heater! ;)
