  I can't say that I have a favourite film but one that always comes to mind is Alien. The story itself is pretty straightforward and is similar to many other science fiction horror movies that came before and after. What I like are basically three things. The first is that it was a movie that made gore look like real gore and was basically the movie that pushed gory effects to the next level. The organic material inside the alien eggs, the chest-bursting alien, the organs of the face-grabbing alien, and the splitting of a crew member's skull were all so well done. I am not a big gore fan, but I love realism in movies. The second was the feelings evoked by the setting, the details, and the suspense. Someone in the movie business described the setting as being like a huge metallic haunted house in space. Particularly, the dripping chains and long empty corridors created a feeling of ill boading. The alien could drop from anywhere, anytime! Finally I liked the science behind the alien creature. This was explored more in the next movie. This was not just a scary monster that lusted for human blood. This was a kind of arthropod that was an adaptor and survivour, like a fierce cockroach. The design, based on the work of H.R. Giger, explored biomechanics and gave the alien a truly original design. The fact that it had no eyes was cool. The life cycle of the alien was also developed and one can see similar life cycles in insects today. Overall an intelligent movie that has not been outdone since. Unfortunately, I feel that the Alien series went downhill after the second part.
