I'm sorry to disappoint everyone who was excitedly waiting until April for Natalie and I to get married. We had this nice fancy wedding planned, but we just couldn't do it. It wasn't right.....
So we eloped instead! Ha! I worried you there for a second didn't I? But yes, you heard me right. We eloped. We got married last night, in fact. Just the two of us. No one else. Nothing fancy. No audience of people staring at us. Just us under the moon, in someone's backyard garden. It was perfect. It was exactly what we wanted to do all along.
We're not fancy people and we're far from traditional. And all of the fancy wedding planning was driving us crazy. Too many people were on the guest list, Natalie never found a dress she liked, the wedding location kept threatening to burn down or disappear in a mudslide. We're big believers in signs and we took all these little things to mean we should do something else.
In fact, we've been talking about eloping since the end of October. We were thisclose to getting married at Disneyland a few months ago when we went there. We had the brochures in our hands, but we chickened out. We were afraid our families would be mad. But we finally decided that we didn't care. This was OUR wedding and we wanted to do it our way.
And our way was to do it privately, with just the person performing the ceremony and her husband. We needed one witness, after all. But we knew we couldn't invite ONE person, because then everyone else would be mad and left out. So it had to be someone we didn't know. It was more fair that way.
So this is what we did. Last night at 7pm, we said our vows and made it official. It was beautiful. It's a lot easier to say exactly what you want to say someone, when the whole world isn't listening in on it. I don't like crowds and I get nervous speaking from my heart in front of people. Just the thought of declaring my mushiest love feelings in front of 75 people made me dizzy and start to panic.
But this....last night....it was just what I wanted to experience. I was still a little dizzy because I couldn't believe it was really happening. But I wasn't panicking. I was totally at peace. I can't really describe everything that happened, or everything that was said, because I want to keep it private. It was that special. And now my life is truly complete. Our lives are complete. It was the best night of my whole life.
And after the ceremony was over, neither of us could stop laughing. We felt so happy and also a little sneaky too. But for once, we did something for just US. With no thought to anyone else. It was a big step for two people pleasing fools like us. It felt good.
We spent our wedding evening eating pie at Denny's afterward. We had no wedding cake, so we ordered pie and coffee instead. Definitely not fancy, but it fit for us. After all, we eat at this restaurant a lot. It's our little place. And the waitress gave us free pie too.
And instead of going off to some elaborate hotel suite to celebrate our newlywed status, we came home. The home that we've made together. Our cats greeted us happily, and we crawled into our big fluffy bed, and reveled in the fact that everything we've been feeling in our hearts since day one, was now official.
We're married. I still can't believe it. It still makes me laugh every time I say it because I'm just so happy and in awe of it. If I could go back and change the impulsive decision we made, I wouldn't. It was exactly US. We're a little crazy and completely unique and not many people really understand us. Which means they're probably not going to be shocked that we did something this out of the ordinary.
I remember back when I was planning to propose to Natalie. I had all these elaborate plans in my head to make it a stunning moment she'd never forget. I wanted to take my time and plot it out perfectly. The right location, wine, the beach....I had plans! But what did I do? I impulsively asked her to marry me in our bedroom one night. She was in her pajamas and I was in my underwear, and this is when I did it.
But it was awesome. It was perfect. Plans are just guidelines, right? Sometimes you just have to seize a moment and forget about plans. I think some of the best things in life are things that just happen unexpectedly. That way, it's all completely natural and nothing is forced. Everything just unfolds the way it was meant to unfold.
And I knew the moment I laid eyes on Natalie, that she was going to be the ONE. She was going to be the person I spent the rest of my life with. And we've often told each other that the wedding was just a formality anyway. We were already married in our hearts. We already had a life together. We'd already promised each other privately that we were in this forever, and no piece of paper was going to make that any more real than it already was.
But now we have the piece of paper. And we made our promises before God. And I think he's pretty happy about this. At the end of the ceremony, after we kissed, we saw a shooting star. I think it was a blessing. I think it meant the universe approved of this too. It was magical.
So this is it. We're married! I hope everyone else is as happy as we are. Now we just have to tell our parents. That might be a little less easy than telling you guys here. But what's done is done. We did it. And hopefully they'll understand and be happy for us too.

My wife and I of twenty-five years did something very similar to yours. Ours was an interesting story and we had one witness also. We have never been disappointed with the way we did it and have wonderful memories, which I'm sure you will will have too.

O.M.G. I have been in SoulCast for 2 days. I just finished reading this to my girlfriend via Skype.
I was laughing and crying when I read it out loud to her. We are an odd couple too. And although I love to tell her in front of 75 people how I feel, this is my picture perfect wedding. I haven't cried and laughed at the same time for a while. I feel lucky that I can do that with her and I remember I did it when my kids were born. But I did it tonight and it felt good!!!

Well, I don't have an animated picture to display and no banner of congratulations to pin up or wave off the overpass of the interstate, but I still give you two my heartiest congratulations. I think it's cool that you went ahead and did what was important without letting all that other stuff spoil everything. I have heard of many couples who get so stressed out about the preparation that the excitement leading up to the big day gets downtrodden with worry. And if you two feel totally happy about your decision then that's what counts most. Your folks might feel shocked and left out, but in the end you two did what you wanted and afterall a wedding is about two people. The rest is all decoration and pomp. -
