I have written before about my amazement over the media and the public’s seemingly endless thirst for pointless news about celebrities. Right now there is so much going on in the world that it amazes me that people still focus on the pointless. On the other hand, maybe because things in the world look so grim is the reason people are looking for something completely pointless to worry about. That seems to be a discussion for another day. If you look at the things going on in the Middle East you can’t help but just shake your head. Looking at the current war between Israel and Lebanon you almost have to throw up your hands and agree that there will never be peace in that region. I just cannot see how it will ever happen. Exactly why two very large groups of people feel they need to fight and die over a tiny scrap of desert is beyond me. There are so many more beautiful places to fight over. Just because there are some crumbling ancient ruins there just isn’t enough for me to care. However, my ancestors were from Germany and Finland and so there really isn’t much in either place that can make me very misty-eyed. The heatwave that has been hitting the United States is a major story. The elderly and the sick are dropping all over the place. Here in Chicago we had a man who survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during World War II and he was found dead in his home. If any of you have seen the movie “Jaws” then you know the story of the Indianapolis. It’s tragic. And yet, when I look at my homepage and at the news stories that are given prominence what am I seeing? I am seeing how the media is still obsessing over why no one has ever seen Tom Cruise and Kati Holmes’ little bundle of joy, Suri Cruise. Yes, I saw a report that Penelope Cruz had just admitted she has seen the little rugrat and that, indeed, she does exist. What is this? Some kind of infant version of Bigfoot? Are we going to get hazy and blurry pictures of Suri in the woods? Once again, I want to convey my general feeling about this particular topic to the rest of the media: WHO CARES???!!! See, the thing is, I don’t understand why the media seems to feel that celebrity parents are obligated to bring the infant out for pictures. Doesn’t that seem a little harsh to a baby? Here you are, an infant, really only worrying about what this big, loud, bright world is after nine months in warmth and only the sound of fluid rushing past your ears. Your main concerns are getting food and pooping. Suddenly you are dragged in front of slavering, idiotic media types who fall all over themselves trying to take pictures of you. How could this not leave some kind of scar deep in the child’s psyche? Does it really matter that much? There are birth records of the kid. Shouldn’t her parents have the right to determine that they would rather not start Suri Tour 2006? Does the media want them to get some kind of stage show together and travel from town to town with semis full of equipment and the high-point of the show would be some amazing laser show and then the unveiling of the little nipper? Would that satisfy them? People seem to keep wondering, why are they hiding Suri? I say, because maybe the want to protect their baby? Or, at the very least, they probably want to wait until a magazine comes up with a suitably large offer for those exclusive pictures. You know how they are. They show up in all kinds of magazines and comprise a lot of pictures of the mother and father laying around staring goo-goo eyed at the infant like it was the Second Coming. Just what we need. Another few pictures of smiling parents that none of us know personally staring at a child we will never meet. My opinion it just to leave them the hell alone. Who the hell cares? Maybe this is some Scientology thing. They promote the silent birth. For all I know Katie and Tom still have to speak to each other in sign language around the infant and walk around on their tip-toes. But it seems to me that if Scientologists believe that noise during the first few moments of life can cause trauma later in the infant’s life that maybe dragging them in front of idiot reporters and photographers might do some damage. That may be the only Scientology belief I can stand behind there. Of course those stupid entertainment shows can’t stop talking about this. They seem to be implying this is some huge, Oliver Stone-sized conspiracy. As if they completely faked this whole thing. Yes, I am very sure Katie Holmes walked around with a fake belly and gained all that weight to create some giant hoax on the world. It just seems to me if you really want to focus on something stupid and pointless that the sporting world has plenty to keep you occupied. There can be little that is, in the general scheme of the world, more pointless that sports. Again, I love sports. I watch sports. I live and die with sports, but even I have to admit that it all really doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of the entire planet’s existence. Whether or not the White Sox win another pennant is not going to stop Global Warming or cure AIDS or cancer, if you get my drift. I mean, really, people, let’s just get our priorities straight. The Sox are fighting for a Wild Card spot here!

So I'm on friendly terms with my ex. Its weird that I can even say that now. I think that after everything I've been through, I've realized that life is too short and fleeting for me to stay angry at someone who I loved once.

It was Saturday night, Phil had just gotten our Dishwasher and Vanity hooked up and the Christmas's were over. We were about to settle in and relax for the evening. My Tea Kettle had just whistled and I scurried into the kitchen to turn the heat down....
