Many people confuse art with religion. If a human-like feature is imagined in a piece of art work, it is given a religious undertone when discovered in a hallowed or sacred environment or setting.

IMHO, some of these sightings border a bit on the blasphemous. Did the Ten commandments not mention that God wants no other image before Him?

Who ever saw a real picture of Jesus or Mary? And yet the number of Jesus and Mary sightings is beginning to resemble the pattern for UFO sightings!

I came across two examples from 2004 and 2007:

[... A granite distributor in Florida expects to fetch a good price for a 400-year-old slab that he says bears an image of Jesus Christ pinned to the cross....

A grilled cheese sandwich, which purportedly bore an image of the Virgin Mary, sold on eBay for $28,000 in 2004.

"This isn't the Virgin Mary in a grilled cheese sandwich sold on eBay," he told FOX 13. "It's quite a substantial piece. And I assume that whoever buys it is going to put it on public display. It is a very interesting natural image."]

Surely, a "natural image" does not readily acquire supernatural properties overnight. Give me a break - Mary sighted on a grilled cheese sandwich! What's next, I wonder.....

Bronx, personally these images "found" or made dont sit right with me.  I think such things just detract people's attention and they find themselves marvelling at these things instead of focusing on instruction in the Bible.

polar: hello. Yes, that's how I see it, too. Apart from making a mockery of christianity - the purchasers and the sellers are usually not exactly famous for their piety - and distracting those who want to hear The Good News, the entire market for these 'religious artefacts' smacks of syndicated fraud and deception.

There are so many abstract paintings and sculpture out there that make you imagine seeing familiar things and objects the more you stare at them.

Add to that lot the people staring at those works of art under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and you will get a pretty good idea of the array and range of religious and atheist 'revelations' possible. Ha-ha.

What's astonishing to me is that anyone can watch these goofy clowns freaking out over random squiggles and not make the logical leap to the realization that a bunch of primitive desert-dwellers did much the same thing thousands of years ago and it wound up turing into a whole religion of goofy clowns...
