Masturbation has a long history, but look at attitudes closer to the 20th century.
Mainly it was during the 18th and 19th centuries that masturbation was associated with mental and physical deficiencies. Prominent physicians, scientists, philosophers, and religious leaders believed that illnesses such as insanity, vision and hearing problems, epilepsy, mental retardation, and general health were caused by self stimulation. Over 60% of medical and mental illnesses were blamed on masturbation. Fear of masturbation was so great throughout the world, extreme measures were devised including mechanical restraints and genital surgery.
The term spermatorrhea was invented to explain nocturnal emissions because no man was willing to admit masturbation.
Examples of anti-masturbation devices:
Bondage- tie them up so they won't touch themselves.
Leather jacket corset- A corset of of leather and steel was created by Dr. Fleck in 1831 for boys. It included a metal penis tube and a metal band attached to the body to prevent access to the testicles. The doctor reported it fit perfectly and continuously prevented access to genitals, could not be moved to cause friction, and could not be removed from body.
Spermatorrhea bandage- kept the penis tightly bound making it impossible to have an erection.
Stephenson spermatic truss- From 1876, this device placed the penis in a pouch and tied down between the legs making erection impossible. It was revised 21 years later adding a metal hood where the penis could move freely, however an erection would drive the penis against spikes.
Bowen device- A cup was placed over the head of the penis and attached to the pubic hair by chains and clips. An erection would painfully pull the hair.
Dr. Moody apparatus for boys- A truss and shield penis tube with a slot on the side which enabled the wearer to urinate.
Penis cooling devices- Invented in 1893 by Frank Orth, penis was inserted in a hole between levers so that if an erection occurred during the night, it would spread the levers and permitting cold water to flow over genitals preventing nocturnal emission.
Sexual armor- A jacket with leather pants which supported a large piece of steel armor with perforations to let urine escape.
Spike lined ring- In 1959, you read right 1959, doctors in Boston created a device to prevent nocturnal emissions or any night time display of sexuality- spike lined penis rings.
In the 20th century, the medical community began questioning whether or not masturbation was independent of various psychiatric and medical illnesses to which it was historically linked.
Well, sometimes science is slow, but eventually gets there.

1959 made me think of my mother in law.......she had 7 boys all born in the mid 1950's thru mid 1960's.my in-laws were good catholics.and sexuality and catholicism don't go easily together.my husband remember's bath time as almost torture time because my mother in law would flick her index finger at any little erection that might 'pop' up.it was a common occurrance- both the little erections and the pain that followed due to her flicking fingers.so yeah, while it might seem barbarous reading about the devices and contraptions you describe here, sexuality still is a kind of strange area- and religion and sexuality don't mesh well still today. -

beyond ~ I have one question...where do you dig up such history?? I agree that in past centuries the mention of sex was grounds for inprisonment just about. Later in life...like 1900s and up it is just a "tabou" thing everyone did but nobody talked about... or dared! But those contraptions are something else!! -

BeyBey...sex and religion are so deeply connected.....specially in Catholicesism....i have been raised as Catholic....luckily i lost my path pretty soon.....but i still remember many forbidden plesasures coming from the darkness of those warm, cozy, incense smelling churches...
There is nothing more sensual than some images in some religious paintings....nothign more tempting of the concept of punishing your own body to achieve salvation......nothing more satisfying that depriving yourself of food or sex for reserving yourself a seat in Heaven...nothing is more exciting that the fear to be discovered masturbating....under those sheet when the lights was off...and you were supposed to be a good girl thinking of Jesus...but angels were so sexy.....and San Sebastian so handsome tied up to that column....:-)
The fear of sex will be instilled in any human being in any possible way...the fear of sex is the way societies have been controlling by ages the women...they were the unsaid target...because they are the reproductive weapons of any nation....

Look how far we have come!!! In this world it seems that anything, when abused can be detrimental. Ya...scientists can be slow sometimes...and so contradictory, say one thing today and revise or refute it tomorrow. Societies is always afraid of what it cannot explain hence tries to control it.Sex was not talked about back in the day......now it sells anything and everything. Makes me wonder what things we consider "shocking" today will be the norm years down the line. -

I took a class on sex and sexuality in college. Had a good prof and learned a lot of cool stuff actually! One of the things we talked about was the idea people used to have that masturbation would make you crazy. One of the reasons people used to believe that was because, back when it was common to institutionalize people with mental illnesses (the ol' rubber room and straitjacket and shock therapy stuff), visiting doctors and family and such would notice that the patients were always masturbating! So they figured it was a common denominator among crazy people.
But of course the real truth is that there is nothing to do all day in a mental institution and you don't have much in your little padded room to play with except yourself, so...what better way to pass the time?
It's funny how sensitive we are about all things sex, that it's so easy for us to get wrong-headed ideas about it because it terrifies us too much to think about it long enough to come to a LOGICAL conclusion...
