I LOVE the IRS!  I don't care what anyone else says about them.  I am tired and frustrated by all of the commercials for frauds who will help you out of your IRS problems by asking whether "the IRS has been harrassing you."

I found out one very simple fact.  If you contact the IRS and explain your situation they will work with you in any way they can.  Yes, they want to be paid, but they do not want to send you into bankruptcy just to get their money.

Let me explain:  I owe the IRS from my 2006 tax return.  Forget the reason why (which just amounts to stupidity on my part for trusting my last boss who lied to me).  Suffice it to say my tax bill was large but I was able to pay a good chunk but left the above amount owed.  Actually the day I got my tax bill last April was the day I got laid off and began my depression.  Suffice it to say, if you haven't worked for 9 months you have no money coming in to pay the bill.

Today was the third time since I paid the large chunk of the bill that I have had to speak with them.  Each time I have, I have spoken to the nicest, most understanding people who were willing to help.  Each time I was given a stay which allows my bank account to stay untouched and I can pay my living expenses.  And As a result, my account will not go into collection for at least a year and as soon as I do start working, I have to call them to work out a payment plan.  Yes, I will have interest to pay but that's okay.

How nice is that?  I truly intend on paying them what I owe because that is my lawful duty (forget whether I think I was overcharged - which I believe I am - but this is not the IRS's fault - blame Congress/President for the current tax laws).  So the moment I get my new job (which I am positive will be very soon) I will pay off my debt to the IRS - then work off the Credit Card Debt I have incurred from Living on my Credit cards for 9 months (yeah, I know, not the smartest move, but didn't have much of a choice.

So, my friends, in conclusion - you have a Tax Issue?  Just call them up and talk to them.

I really think that they are willing to work with anyone (although it would be lovely to think I am THAT special <big grin>).  I truly believe that what happens with most people is that they don't speak with them.

My friend who had about the same amount due to them, just ignored the letters - hoping it would just go away - and recently had her wages garnished until she paid.  She paid and she is fine now, but I think because she just kept her proverbial "eyes shut" the IRS comes after you.

F-G: I havent dealt with the IRS myself (knock on wood)....but I do get annoyed by those commercials coz I think that there is a catch to them.....almost like predatory lending making people believe there is a quick fix...What I wonder is what do they get in turn for wading off the IRS? In the end I bet the clients end up paying more or the same amount owed...whereas they could fix it themselves the way you did....with a little research, we can fix most of our issues ourselves without outside help....most of the time.

Yesterday, I discovered the IRS had placed a tax levy on my bank account and nearly wiped it out....
